A walking stick refers to two very different things: a mobility aid used for balance and support while walking, or a type of insect famous for looking exactly like a twig. Both meanings are common enough that a search for this term could go either way, so here’s what you need to know about each.
The Walking Stick as a Mobility Aid
A walking stick (also called a cane) is a handheld device that helps redistribute your weight and improve balance while walking. People use them for everything from mild stability issues to recovery after surgery or injury. The most common type is the single-point cane, which has one tip touching the ground and works well for mild balance or walking problems. Quad canes, which have four small feet at the base, exist but are generally not ideal for most people because they don’t offer optimal stability despite their wider footprint.
Walking sticks come in fixed-length and adjustable versions. Fixed sticks are often made of wood and need to be cut to size, while adjustable aluminum or carbon fiber models let you dial in the height with a push-button mechanism.
How to Size a Walking Stick Correctly
Getting the right height matters more than most people realize. Stand in the shoes you wear most often and let your arms hang naturally at your sides. The top of the walking stick should line up with the crease on the inside of your wrist. When you grip it, your elbow should bend at roughly 15 to 20 degrees. An alternative method places the handle level with the bony prominence on the side of your hip, which typically produces the same result.
Even small differences in footwear throw off the measurement. A 2-centimeter heel difference between shoe types changes your optimal stick height by the same amount, so measuring in dress shoes when you normally wear sneakers gives you the wrong fit. If you’re unsure about the angle at your elbow, use a mirror or ask someone to check.
Handle Types and Comfort
The handle shape determines how comfortable a walking stick feels over extended use. The classic T-handle (a straight bar across the top) is simple and widely available, but it concentrates pressure on the heel of your palm. Offset handles curve the shaft forward so your weight passes straight down through the cane rather than at an angle, improving stability. Ergonomic palm-grip handles are molded to fit the contour of your hand, distributing weight more evenly along the shaft and reducing strain for people with arthritis, carpal tunnel syndrome, or other hand conditions.
One detail people overlook: many ergonomic handles are designed specifically for either the right or left hand. You need to select the correct orientation, since a right-hand grip used on the left side won’t sit properly in your palm.
The Walking Stick Insect
Walking sticks are also an entire order of insects (Phasmatodea) that have evolved to look almost indistinguishable from twigs, branches, and leaves. There are roughly 3,000 known species worldwide, ranging from a few centimeters long to over 30 centimeters. Their primary survival strategy is camouflage so effective that predators simply don’t notice them sitting on a branch.
These insects develop unusual body shapes, including horns, spines, and lobes on their legs and abdomen, that break up their outline and mimic plant structures. Many species come in green and brown forms to match different foliage. Even within a single population, individuals can vary dramatically in color and body features. When disturbed, a walking stick will often sway gently back and forth, imitating a dead twig moving in the breeze.
What Walking Stick Insects Eat
Walking sticks are herbivores. The Indian walking stick, one of the most commonly encountered species, feeds on a wide variety of plants including rose, oak, ivy, jasmine, hibiscus, geranium, azalea, and even some common garden vegetables. Native North American species like the western shorthorned walking stick and the gray walking stick tend to eat grasses and woody shrubs in dry, wild areas. Adult females can live for several months, spending most of that time feeding at night and staying motionless during the day.
Defense Beyond Camouflage
When blending in fails, some walking stick species have a backup plan. One of the more remarkable defenses is autotomy, the ability to deliberately drop a leg when grabbed by a predator. The insect simply detaches the limb and escapes. What makes this even more impressive is that lost legs grow back over successive molts. The first molt after losing a leg produces a replacement about one quarter of normal size. The second molt brings it to roughly half size. By the third molt, the regenerated leg is nearly indistinguishable from the original.
A smaller number of species go further. In the southeastern United States, the twostriped walking stick can eject a toxic chemical spray from its thorax with surprising accuracy, and it often aims directly at the face or eyes of a threat. Only two of the 33 walking stick species found in the United States have this ability, so most are completely harmless. But the twostriped walking stick’s spray is potent enough to cause significant eye irritation in humans who handle them carelessly.
Telling the Two Apart in Conversation
Context usually makes the meaning obvious. In healthcare and mobility discussions, “walking stick” refers to the cane. In biology, nature, or pest control contexts, it refers to the insect. In British English, “walking stick” leans toward the mobility aid, while Americans more commonly say “cane” for the device and “walking stick” for the bug. If you searched this term because you spotted a strange twig-like creature on your porch, you almost certainly found a phasmid, and it’s harmless in the vast majority of cases.
