Albon is a prescription antibiotic used in dogs primarily to treat coccidia, a common intestinal parasite, and secondarily to fight a range of bacterial infections affecting the respiratory tract, urinary system, skin, and soft tissues. Its active ingredient is sulfadimethoxine, a long-acting sulfonamide that stops certain organisms from producing a B vitamin (folic acid) they need to survive and multiply.
Coccidia: The Most Common Reason Dogs Get Albon
The single most frequent reason a vet prescribes Albon is coccidiosis, an intestinal infection caused by tiny single-celled parasites called Isospora. Puppies and dogs with weakened immune systems are especially vulnerable. Coccidia invade the lining of the intestines, causing watery diarrhea (sometimes bloody), dehydration, weight loss, and lethargy. In very young puppies, a severe case can become dangerous quickly.
Albon doesn’t kill coccidia outright. Instead, it starves them of folic acid, which blocks their ability to reproduce. This gives the dog’s immune system time to clear the infection on its own. The technical term is “microbiostatic,” meaning it stops the parasite’s growth rather than destroying it directly. Because the drug works by preventing reinfection cycles rather than wiping out every organism at once, treatment typically lasts one to three weeks, or until a few days after symptoms resolve.
Bacterial Infections Albon Can Treat
Beyond coccidia, Albon is labeled for a surprisingly broad list of bacterial infections in dogs. The prescribing information from Zoetis, the manufacturer, lists the following uses when the bacteria involved are sensitive to the drug:
- Respiratory infections: tonsillitis, pharyngitis, bronchitis, pneumonia
- Skin and soft tissue infections: pustular dermatitis, abscesses, wound infections, anal gland infections
- Urinary tract infections: bladder infections (cystitis) and kidney infections (nephritis)
- Gastrointestinal infections: bacterial enteritis, salmonellosis
- Reproductive infections: uterine infections including pyometra and metritis
It’s effective against several common bacterial families, including streptococci, staphylococci, E. coli, salmonella, klebsiella, and proteus. That said, in everyday veterinary practice, sulfadimethoxine alone is used almost exclusively for coccidia. When vets need a sulfa drug for bacterial infections, they more often reach for a combination product that pairs a sulfonamide with a second ingredient (like trimethoprim or ormetoprim), which attacks folic acid production at two different points. That double hit creates a more powerful antibacterial effect and better tissue penetration than sulfadimethoxine alone.
How Albon Works in the Body
Sulfonamides like Albon are chemical mimics of a molecule called PABA, which bacteria and certain parasites need to build folic acid from scratch. Albon competes with PABA for a spot on a key enzyme in that process. When Albon wins that competition, the organism can’t make folic acid and can’t replicate its genetic material, so it stops growing.
The reason this is safe for your dog is simple: mammals don’t manufacture their own folic acid. They get it from food. So the drug targets a pathway that exists only in the parasite or bacterium, leaving your dog’s cells unaffected.
Dosing and How It’s Given
Albon comes as an oral liquid suspension and as tablets. The liquid form is especially useful for puppies and small dogs where precise dosing matters. Your vet will typically start with a higher “loading dose” on the first day, around 25 mg per pound of body weight, then drop to half that amount (12.5 mg per pound) for each following day. This front-loaded approach gets the drug to effective levels in the bloodstream quickly.
For coccidiosis, the full course usually runs 10 to 21 days, depending on how severe the infection is and how fast symptoms clear. It’s important to finish the entire course even if your dog looks better after a few days. Stopping early can allow surviving parasites to bounce back.
Side Effects to Watch For
Most dogs tolerate Albon well, but there are a few side effects worth knowing about, particularly with longer courses of treatment.
Dry eye. Sulfonamides can trigger an immune reaction that reduces tear production, a condition called keratoconjunctivitis sicca (KCS). This is more commonly reported after prolonged therapy. Signs include thick discharge from the eyes, redness, squinting, or a dull appearance to the eye surface. If your dog develops these symptoms while on Albon, let your vet know promptly, because chronic dry eye can damage the cornea if left untreated.
Kidney crystals. The drug or its breakdown products can become less soluble as they’re filtered through the kidneys, forming crystals in the urinary tract. Young dogs and dehydrated dogs face the highest risk. Symptoms can include decreased urination, blood in the urine, or signs of a urinary tract infection. Making sure your dog has constant access to fresh water during treatment helps reduce this risk. Your vet may check a urine sample during extended courses to look for crystals or blood.
General gastrointestinal upset. Some dogs experience decreased appetite, nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea. Since diarrhea is also the main symptom of the coccidia infection itself, it can be tricky to distinguish the two. If diarrhea worsens after starting Albon rather than gradually improving, that’s worth a call to your vet.
Dogs That Should Not Take Albon
Certain dogs face higher risks with this medication. Doberman Pinschers are predisposed to immune-mediated side effects from sulfonamides, and Albon is generally best avoided in this breed. Samoyeds and Miniature Schnauzers carry similar concerns.
Dogs with existing liver or kidney disease should not take Albon, since the drug is processed through both organs and could worsen damage. Dogs already diagnosed with dry eye should avoid it as well, because sulfonamides could reduce their already compromised tear production further. Albon is also not considered safe during pregnancy.
Any dog with a history of allergic reactions to sulfa-class drugs should steer clear entirely. If your dog has been on a sulfa antibiotic before without issues, that’s reassuring, but always mention prior drug reactions to your vet before starting a new prescription.
What to Expect During Treatment
If your dog is being treated for coccidia, you’ll typically see diarrhea begin to improve within the first few days, though it may take the full course of treatment for stools to completely normalize. Your vet may want a follow-up fecal exam after treatment ends to confirm the parasites have been cleared. Reinfection is possible, especially in environments where multiple dogs share space, so cleaning up feces promptly and disinfecting contaminated areas matters.
Keep water available at all times during treatment. This is the single most practical thing you can do to reduce the risk of kidney crystals. If your dog is a puppy recovering from coccidia-related dehydration, your vet may also recommend a bland diet or electrolyte support to help with recovery.
