- Fixes that backfire: Adding highway lanes to reduce congestion, prescribing antibiotics so freely that resistant bacteria emerge, or offering overtime pay that leads to burnout and higher turnover.
- Shifting the burden: Relying on painkillers for chronic back pain instead of addressing posture, ergonomics, and stress. The symptom improves temporarily while the underlying cause worsens.
- Success to the successful: A school gives more resources to its highest-performing students, who then perform even better, justifying even more resources.
