What Is an LD? Types, Causes, and School Support

An LD, or learning disability, is a neurological condition that affects how the brain processes information needed for reading, writing, math, or other academic skills. It’s not about intelligence. People with learning disabilities typically have average or above-average IQ scores but struggle in one or more specific areas because their brains handle certain types of information differently. About 32 percent of all students receiving special education services in the U.S. have a specific learning disability, making it the single most common category of disability in public schools.

How Learning Disabilities Are Defined

Two major definitions shape how learning disabilities are understood in the United States. The federal Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) defines a specific learning disability as a disorder in one or more of the basic psychological processes involved in understanding or using language, spoken or written. This can show up as difficulty listening, thinking, speaking, reading, writing, spelling, or doing math. Crucially, the disability cannot be primarily the result of vision or hearing problems, intellectual disability, emotional disturbance, or economic disadvantage.

The clinical definition in the DSM-5, the manual used by psychologists and psychiatrists, requires four things: persistent difficulties in reading, writing, or math during the school years; academic skills well below the average range on standardized tests; problems that began during childhood; and difficulties that aren’t better explained by other developmental, neurological, or sensory conditions. In practical terms, this means a child who reads slowly and with great effort, not in the same manner as typical readers, even though they’re otherwise capable.

The Main Types

Learning disabilities are grouped by the academic skill they affect most.

  • Dyslexia is a difficulty with how the brain processes written and spoken language. It primarily affects reading but can also impact spelling, writing, speaking, listening comprehension, memory, and even sense of direction. It’s the most widely recognized learning disability.
  • Dyscalculia is a learning disability in math. It can involve trouble understanding quantities, grasping concepts like bigger and smaller, interpreting math symbols, or applying understood concepts to solve problems.
  • Dysgraphia affects the physical act of writing, whether by hand or on a keyboard. A related condition called disorder of written expression involves difficulty organizing thoughts and language on the page, even when handwriting itself is fine.

These categories often overlap. A child with dyslexia may also struggle with written expression, and someone with dyscalculia may have difficulty reading word problems. Each person’s profile of strengths and weaknesses is unique.

What Happens in the Brain

Brain imaging research has identified specific structural and functional differences linked to each type of learning disability. In dyslexia, differences appear in brain areas responsible for word recognition and the ability to connect letters with sounds. These regions, located in the left side of the brain, are less active or structured differently in people with dyslexia compared to typical readers.

Dyscalculia involves differences in a brain region critical for understanding and manipulating numbers. When this area functions differently, tasks like estimating quantities or performing mental arithmetic become significantly harder. Dysgraphia, meanwhile, has been linked to differences in brain areas responsible for planning fine motor movements and integrating sensory feedback during handwriting.

These are genuine neurological differences, not laziness or a lack of effort. This is why learning disabilities persist across a person’s lifetime, even though the right support can dramatically improve functioning.

How Learning Disabilities Are Identified

The process typically starts when a parent or teacher notices a child isn’t keeping pace with peers despite adequate instruction. From there, identification follows two stages: an initial screening to flag children who might need extra support, followed by a comprehensive evaluation to determine whether a learning disability is present and which areas are affected.

A full evaluation is conducted by trained professionals and covers multiple dimensions: health, vision and hearing, social and emotional status, general intelligence, academic performance, communication abilities, and motor skills. No single test score can determine the presence of a learning disability. Evaluators use at least two different tools and multiple sources of information to build a complete picture.

Intelligence testing has traditionally played a central role, especially when evaluators looked for a gap between a child’s IQ and their actual academic achievement. This “discrepancy model” has grown increasingly controversial, however, and intelligence tests are no longer considered the primary criterion. Instead, evaluations focus more heavily on reading, math, and writing assessments that reveal specific skill gaps and help guide instruction.

Support in School: IEPs and 504 Plans

Once identified, students with learning disabilities can access two main types of support in public schools. An Individualized Education Program (IEP) is the more comprehensive option. It’s a legal plan created under IDEA that sets specific learning goals and outlines the special education services and modifications a school will provide. To qualify, a child’s ability to learn must be affected by one of 13 conditions listed in the law, and specific learning disabilities are one of them.

A 504 plan, covered under Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act, is less intensive. It doesn’t provide specialized instruction but removes barriers to learning through accommodations: extra time on tests, preferential seating, breaks during long assignments, or access to assistive technology. A 504 plan is often appropriate when a student’s disability affects learning but doesn’t require a fully individualized curriculum.

The key difference is scope. An IEP changes what and how a student is taught. A 504 plan changes the conditions under which they learn. Many families start with one and transition to the other as needs evolve.

How Many People Are Affected

In the 2022 to 2023 school year, 7.5 million students ages 3 to 21 received special education services under IDEA, representing 15 percent of all public school students. Of those, 32 percent had a specific learning disability. That translates to roughly 2.4 million students in the U.S. alone receiving services specifically for a learning disability.

These numbers likely undercount the actual prevalence, since many children with mild learning disabilities are never formally evaluated, and adults who grew up before widespread screening may never have received a diagnosis at all.

The Other Meaning: Lethal Dose
