In nursing, “LN” stands for Licensed Nurse, a broad term that covers any nurse who holds a state-issued license to practice. In most contexts, when people use “LN,” they’re referring to a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) or, in Texas and California, a Licensed Vocational Nurse (LVN). These are entry-level nursing professionals who provide basic medical care under the supervision of registered nurses and physicians. You may also see “LN” used as a general category that includes Registered Nurses (RNs), though the abbreviation is far more commonly associated with practical nursing.
LPN vs. LVN: Same Role, Different Name
Licensed Practical Nurse and Licensed Vocational Nurse describe the same job. The title depends entirely on which state you work in. Texas and California use “LVN,” while the remaining states use “LPN.” The responsibilities are nearly identical regardless of the title, though the specific tasks a nurse can perform may vary slightly based on each state’s Nursing Practice Act.
What a Licensed Nurse Actually Does
LPNs focus on hands-on, task-driven patient care. Their daily work typically includes taking vital signs, collecting blood and urine samples, administering medications, changing wound dressings, and ensuring patient comfort. They carry out the treatment plans that registered nurses and physicians create, rather than designing those plans themselves.
This is one of the key distinctions between an LPN and an RN. Registered nurses take on an added layer of clinical decision-making: conducting patient assessments, developing care strategies, and adjusting treatment based on how a patient responds. LPNs execute those plans but generally aren’t involved in the strategic side of patient care. Both roles require a license, but the scope of what each nurse is authorized to do differs significantly.
Where Licensed Nurses Work
Nursing homes and residential care facilities are by far the largest employers of LPNs, accounting for about 38% of all LPN positions. Hospitals come in second at roughly 15%. The remaining jobs are spread across physicians’ offices, home health agencies, and outpatient clinics. This distribution reflects the nature of the work: long-term care settings rely heavily on LPNs for the consistent, routine patient care that residents need every day.
Education and Licensing Requirements
Becoming an LPN is one of the fastest paths into nursing. The process starts with a high school diploma or GED, followed by a vocational training program at a community college or technical school. These programs typically run about 12 months, covering fundamentals like anatomy, pharmacology, and clinical skills through a mix of classroom instruction and supervised hands-on practice.
After completing the program, graduates must pass the NCLEX-PN, the national licensing exam for practical nurses. The test covers eight content areas, with the heaviest emphasis on coordinated care (18 to 24% of questions) and topics like pharmacology, safety, infection control, and physiological adaptation. Passing this exam is what earns the “licensed” part of the title, and no state will allow you to practice without it.
How State Boards Regulate Licensed Nurses
Every state and U.S. territory has a Board of Nursing (BON) that governs nursing practice through its own Nursing Practice Act. These boards set educational standards, establish licensing fees, require criminal background checks, and enforce continuing education requirements. They also have the power to discipline nurses who violate regulations or endanger patients.
Most states have a single board overseeing all nursing levels, from practical nurses to advanced practice nurses. A few states, including California, Nebraska, West Virginia, and Louisiana, maintain separate boards for different nursing levels. All of these boards are members of the National Council of State Boards of Nursing (NCSBN), which coordinates standards across the country and administers the NCLEX exams.
One notable development is the Nurse Licensure Compact, now adopted by 34 states. This compact allows a nurse with a single license to practice in any participating state, which is especially useful for nurses who live near state borders or want to work via telehealth across state lines.
How LPNs Differ From RNs
The biggest differences come down to education, autonomy, and scope of practice. LPNs complete a certificate program in about 12 to 18 months, while RNs need either an associate degree (two years) or a bachelor’s degree (four years). Many hospitals now prefer or require a bachelor’s for RN positions.
In clinical practice, RNs work more independently. They assess patients, create and modify care plans, and make judgment calls about treatment. LPNs work under the direction of RNs or physicians and focus on carrying out specific tasks. This doesn’t make the LPN role less important. In settings like nursing homes, LPNs are often the primary caregivers patients interact with throughout the day. But the career ceiling is different: advancing into leadership, specialized, or advanced practice roles typically requires becoming an RN first.
