A licensed practical nurse (LPN) is a healthcare professional who provides basic medical care under the supervision of a registered nurse (RN) or physician. LPNs handle essential, hands-on patient tasks like checking vital signs, administering medications, changing wound dressings, and helping patients with daily needs. In Texas and California, the same role goes by a different title: licensed vocational nurse (LVN). The job duties are identical regardless of the name.

What LPNs Do Day to Day

LPNs are the frontline caregivers who spend the most direct time with patients. Their core responsibilities include monitoring blood pressure and other vital signs, inserting catheters, changing bandages, helping patients eat and bathe, and documenting health changes. In some states, LPNs can also start IV fluid drips and give IV medications, though this varies by state licensing rules.

Beyond physical care, LPNs play a communication role. They report changes in a patient’s condition to the supervising RN, provide basic education to patients and their families, and help carry out the nursing care plan that the RN develops. If something looks wrong, the LPN is often the first person to notice because they’re the ones taking vitals and spending time at the bedside.

How LPNs Differ From RNs

The biggest distinction comes down to independence. An RN works in an independent role: they perform comprehensive patient assessments, formulate nursing diagnoses, create care plans, and supervise other nursing staff. An LPN works in a dependent role, meaning they contribute to those same processes but don’t lead them. An LPN collects patient data and recognizes when something needs attention, but it’s the RN who interprets that data, identifies the underlying problem, and decides the course of action.

In practical terms, an RN might evaluate a post-surgical patient’s overall recovery trajectory and adjust the care plan accordingly, while the LPN carries out the specific interventions in that plan: administering prescribed medications, monitoring vitals at set intervals, and flagging any unexpected changes. LPNs also cannot delegate tasks to other nurses the way RNs can. Think of the LPN as the essential executor of patient care, with the RN serving as the clinical decision-maker overseeing the bigger picture.

Where LPNs Work

Nursing homes and long-term care facilities employ a large share of LPNs, which makes sense given how much of the work involves ongoing daily care for residents. LPNs also work in hospitals, physician offices, home health agencies, and outpatient clinics. Home health is a growing segment, as more patients recover or manage chronic conditions outside of hospital settings. In these roles, LPNs often work more independently on a day-to-day basis, though they still report to a supervising RN or physician.

Education and Licensing Requirements

Becoming an LPN is one of the fastest paths into nursing. You need a high school diploma or GED to start, then you complete a practical nursing diploma program that typically runs 12 to 18 months. Some programs stretch to two years depending on the school. These programs combine classroom instruction in anatomy, pharmacology, and patient care with hands-on clinical rotations in real healthcare settings.

After completing the program, you must pass the NCLEX-PN, a national licensing exam, before you can practice. Every state requires this exam, though the specific scope of what you’re allowed to do once licensed varies from state to state. Some states grant broader clinical privileges than others, so it’s worth checking your state’s nursing board for details.

LPN Salary and Job Outlook

LPN pay varies by location, employer, and experience, but the median annual wage sits in the mid-$50,000 range nationally. Nurses working in hospitals or metropolitan areas generally earn more than those in rural clinics or long-term care facilities. Overtime, shift differentials for nights and weekends, and specialization can all push earnings higher.

Demand for LPNs remains steady. An aging population needs more long-term care, and the healthcare system increasingly relies on LPNs to fill gaps in patient coverage. Job openings are projected to grow at a healthy rate over the next decade, and the relatively short training period means you can enter the workforce quickly compared to other nursing roles.

Moving From LPN to RN

Many LPNs treat the role as a stepping stone toward becoming a registered nurse. LPN-to-RN bridge programs are designed specifically for this transition, letting you build on the education and clinical hours you’ve already completed rather than starting from scratch. A typical bridge program runs about three semesters and includes around 30 credit hours of general education courses alongside 32 credit hours of nursing-specific coursework, plus clinical rotations.

Admission usually requires passing a nursing entrance exam and a foundations exam that tests the knowledge you gained as an LPN. The score thresholds vary by program, but expect to demonstrate solid competency in core nursing concepts. Once you complete the program, you sit for the NCLEX-RN exam, which qualifies you to work as a registered nurse with a broader scope of practice, higher earning potential, and more career flexibility.
