Aquamin magnesium (often labeled Aquamin-Mg or Aquamin MG) is a branded mineral ingredient derived from seawater off the Irish coast. It contains about 12% elemental magnesium along with 72 additional trace minerals, which is what sets it apart from standard magnesium supplements that typically contain a single isolated compound like magnesium oxide or magnesium citrate.
Where Aquamin Magnesium Comes From
Aquamin-Mg is harvested from clean Atlantic seawater near Ireland. The seawater naturally concentrates magnesium alongside dozens of other trace elements, and the manufacturing process preserves that full mineral profile rather than isolating magnesium alone. This is different from most magnesium supplements on the market, which are synthesized in a lab from a single magnesium salt.
You’ll sometimes see Aquamin-Mg confused with a related product called Aquamin F. They come from the same company but are fundamentally different ingredients. Aquamin F is derived from a red seaweed (Lithothamnion corallioides) and is primarily a calcium source, containing about 32% calcium. Aquamin-Mg is the seawater-derived version built around magnesium. Some supplements combine both to cover calcium and magnesium in one formula, so checking the label for which version is included tells you whether you’re getting a calcium-rich or magnesium-rich product.

Because it comes from seawater rather than a chemical reaction, it carries along naturally occurring minerals like zinc, selenium, iron, manganese, and dozens of others in small amounts. The idea is that these trace elements work together in ways that a single isolated mineral can’t replicate.
There is some basis for this. Minerals in the body don’t operate independently. Magnesium, for example, is involved in over 300 enzymatic reactions, many of which also require cofactors like zinc or manganese. Whether the trace amounts present in Aquamin-Mg are large enough to meaningfully contribute beyond the magnesium itself is still an open question, but the multi-mineral composition is at least a plausible advantage over pure magnesium salts.
Effects on Gut Health
One of the more interesting areas of research on Aquamin-Mg involves gut bacteria. In an animal study, rats supplemented with the marine mineral blend at just 0.1% of their diet showed significantly more bacterial species in their gut compared to controls. Both overall species count and species richness (measured by the Chao1 index) were meaningfully higher in the supplemented group.
The supplemented rats also produced more short-chain fatty acids, specifically butyrate and propionate. These compounds are fuel for the cells lining your colon, and they play roles in immune function, fat metabolism, and maintaining the integrity of the gut barrier. A healthy, diverse gut microbiome is increasingly linked to better digestion, stronger immunity, and lower systemic inflammation. This research is still in the animal phase, so the direct translation to humans isn’t confirmed, but the direction is promising.
Bone and Joint Research
Lab studies have tested Aquamin’s effects on bone-building cells called osteoblasts. In cell culture experiments, Aquamin promoted increased mineralization, essentially helping bone cells deposit more of the minerals that make bones hard and strong. It’s worth noting that these bone studies used the broader Aquamin mineral complex (which includes both calcium and magnesium forms), not Aquamin-Mg in isolation. The takeaway is that the full mineral profile from this marine source appears to benefit bone cells, but much of that effect likely depends on the calcium content from Aquamin F working alongside the magnesium.
How It Compares to Standard Magnesium
Most magnesium supplements give you one form of magnesium paired with a carrier molecule: magnesium oxide, magnesium glycinate, magnesium citrate, and so on. Each form has different absorption rates and different strengths. Magnesium glycinate, for instance, is popular for sleep and relaxation. Magnesium citrate is commonly used for digestive regularity. Magnesium oxide packs the most elemental magnesium per capsule but is absorbed poorly.

It may be listed as “Aquamin Mg,” “Aquamin-Mg,” or “magnesium from seawater (Aquamin).” Some brands prominently feature the Aquamin name on the front of the bottle, while others bury it in fine print.
Pay attention to how much elemental magnesium you’re actually getting per serving. Since Aquamin-Mg is only 12% magnesium by weight, a supplement containing 500 mg of Aquamin-Mg delivers about 60 mg of actual magnesium. The recommended daily intake for magnesium is 310 to 420 mg for most adults depending on age and sex, so the math matters when evaluating whether a product gives you a meaningful dose or just a token amount alongside the trace minerals.
