What Is Artichoke Extract Good For? Benefits & Uses

Artichoke extract, made from the leaves of the globe artichoke plant, has the strongest evidence for lowering cholesterol, supporting liver health, and relieving digestive discomfort like bloating and indigestion. It works primarily by boosting bile production, which helps your body break down fats more efficiently, and by delivering plant compounds that act as antioxidants in the liver. Most clinical trials use doses between 600 mg and 2,700 mg per day.

Cholesterol Reduction

This is where artichoke extract has some of its most compelling human data. In a German trial of 143 people with high LDL cholesterol, those taking 1,800 mg of artichoke extract daily for six weeks saw their total cholesterol drop by 18.5%, compared to 8.6% in the placebo group. LDL (the “bad” cholesterol) fell by 22.9% in the artichoke group versus just 6.3% with placebo.

The key compound behind this effect appears to be luteolin, a flavonoid concentrated in artichoke leaves. Luteolin inhibits the liver’s production of new cholesterol at the cellular level, essentially slowing down the same pathway that statin medications target, though through a different and much milder mechanism. Artichoke extract is not a replacement for prescribed cholesterol medications, but for people with moderately elevated levels looking for a dietary supplement, these numbers are notable.

Liver Health and Enzyme Levels

A meta-analysis of seven randomized controlled trials found that artichoke supplementation significantly reduced two key markers of liver stress: ALT and AST. These are enzymes that rise in the blood when liver cells are damaged or inflamed. The reductions were statistically significant for both markers, with the effect on ALT being particularly strong in trials lasting eight weeks or less.

For AST, doses above 500 mg per day produced the clearest benefit. The protective mechanism involves several layers. Artichoke’s bioactive compounds reduce the production of harmful reactive oxygen species in liver cells, slow down a process called lipid peroxidation (where fats in cell membranes break down and cause damage), and boost the activity of glutathione peroxidase, one of the body’s built-in antioxidant enzymes. These properties make artichoke extract especially relevant for people with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, where oxidative stress is a central driver of liver damage.

Digestive Symptom Relief

Artichoke extract has a long history of traditional use for indigestion, and modern research supports this. In a study of people with both irritable bowel syndrome and dyspepsia (chronic upper-belly discomfort, bloating, and nausea), artichoke leaf extract reduced IBS incidence by 26.4% and cut overall dyspepsia symptom scores by 41%. Quality-of-life scores improved by 20%.

The mechanism centers on bile. Artichoke extract is a strong choleretic, meaning it stimulates your liver to produce more bile and increases bile flow into the intestine. Animal studies confirm a significant increase in both bile flow and total bile acid concentration after artichoke administration. Bile acts like a detergent for dietary fat, breaking it into smaller droplets so your digestive enzymes can work on them. When bile production is sluggish, fat sits in the stomach and small intestine longer than it should, producing that heavy, bloated feeling after meals. By ramping up bile output, artichoke extract helps your gut process fatty foods more efficiently.

Blood Sugar

A meta-analysis of nine trials covering 512 participants found that artichoke supplementation reduced fasting blood sugar by an average of 5.28 mg/dL. That’s a modest but statistically significant drop. However, the effect didn’t extend to other glucose-related measures: fasting insulin levels, insulin resistance scores, and HbA1c (the three-month blood sugar average) all remained unchanged. This suggests artichoke extract may have a small, short-term influence on blood sugar regulation but isn’t powerful enough to meaningfully shift the longer-term picture of glucose control.

Blood Pressure

The overall evidence here is mixed. A meta-analysis of eight trials found no significant effect on blood pressure in the general population. But a subgroup analysis told a more interesting story: among people who already had high blood pressure, artichoke supplementation reduced systolic pressure by about 3.2 mmHg and diastolic pressure by about 2.3 mmHg. This effect only appeared with at least 12 weeks of supplementation. Eight weeks wasn’t long enough. So if you have normal blood pressure, artichoke extract probably won’t change it. If your blood pressure is already elevated, there may be a small benefit over time, though it’s not large enough to replace standard treatment.

Typical Dosing

Clinical trials have used a wide range, from 600 mg to 2,700 mg of artichoke leaf extract per day, typically split into two or three doses. The most commonly studied dose is around 1,800 mg daily. Supplements are made from dried artichoke leaves, not the hearts you eat at dinner, because the leaves contain far higher concentrations of the active compounds. Most benefits in trials appeared within six to eight weeks of consistent use.

Safety and Who Should Avoid It

Artichoke extract is well tolerated in most people at the doses studied. The two groups who need to be cautious are those with gallstones and those with certain plant allergies.

Because artichoke extract stimulates gallbladder contraction (that’s how it pushes bile into the intestine), it can be risky if you have gallstones or other gallbladder disease. Stronger contractions could push a stone into a duct, causing a painful blockage or, in extreme cases, rupture. If you have a known gallbladder condition, this supplement is not one to take casually.

Artichokes belong to the Asteraceae plant family, which also includes chrysanthemums, arnica, ragweed, and daisies. If you have a known allergy to any of these plants, you should avoid artichoke extract, as cross-reactivity is possible.
