What Is Average Girth Size? Numbers From Research

The average penile girth (circumference) when flaccid is approximately 9.31 cm, or about 3.66 inches, based on a meta-analysis of 33 studies covering nearly 37,000 men. Girth is measured around the shaft using a flexible tape, and it varies less between individuals than length does. If you’ve been wondering how you compare, the clinical data paints a narrower range than most people expect.

Average Girth by the Numbers

Girth, in medical literature, refers to the circumference of the penile shaft. It’s measured by wrapping a flexible tape around the widest part, typically at the base. A 2025 systematic review and meta-analysis published in Urology Research and Practice pooled data from 33 studies and 36,883 men worldwide. The overall average flaccid circumference across all regions fell between roughly 8.4 cm and 9.7 cm (3.3 to 3.8 inches), depending on geographic population.

A large Italian study of young men found a mean flaccid circumference of 9.59 cm (about 3.8 inches). Reliable erect girth data is harder to come by because fewer clinical studies measure circumference during erection, but the commonly cited average from earlier research sits around 11.66 cm (4.59 inches) when erect. Most men fall within about 1 cm above or below these averages.

How Girth Varies Across Populations

The meta-analysis broke down flaccid circumference by WHO world region. Men in the Americas had the largest average at 9.74 cm (3.83 inches), followed by Europeans at 9.36 cm (3.68 inches), South-East Asians at 9.14 cm (3.60 inches), Eastern Mediterranean populations at 8.96 cm (3.53 inches), Africans at 8.78 cm (3.46 inches), and Western Pacific men at 8.40 cm (3.31 inches).

The differences are real but modest. The gap between the largest and smallest regional averages is only about 1.3 cm, roughly half an inch. And when the researchers looked specifically at erect measurements, they found no statistically significant difference between regions at all, though they noted this could partly reflect the smaller number of studies that measured erect circumference.

Girth Doesn’t Predict Length (or Vice Versa)

A common assumption is that a longer penis will also be thicker. The data doesn’t support this. A prospective study of 800 men found low or no correlation between most penile dimensions and body measurements. Flaccid length and stretched length were strongly correlated with each other (as you’d expect), but circumference was essentially independent of length. The same study found nearly zero correlation between girth and height, weight, BMI, age, or foot size.

This means two men with identical lengths can have noticeably different girths, and knowing one measurement tells you almost nothing about the other. It also means that common folk wisdom about hand size, shoe size, or height predicting penis dimensions has no meaningful basis in the data.

How Body Weight Affects Measurements

BMI has a very slight negative correlation with visible penile length (around r = −0.2 for stretched length), meaning men with higher body fat may appear slightly shorter due to the fat pad above the pubic bone. Clinical measurement protocols account for this by pressing the ruler into the fat pad to reach the pubic bone, which can recover a few hidden centimeters.

Girth, on the other hand, shows virtually no relationship with BMI (correlation of just 0.1). Carrying extra weight won’t change your actual circumference. It can, however, make the penis look proportionally smaller by burying part of the shaft beneath the surrounding tissue.

How to Measure Accurately

Clinical protocols use a flexible tape (paper or fabric) wrapped around the shaft at the base. You should measure when the tape sits snug but not compressed into the skin. For the most consistent result, measure at the same state of arousal each time, since girth changes significantly between flaccid and erect states. Avoid using a rigid ruler or string, which can introduce error. If you’re comparing yourself to published averages, keep in mind that most studies report the flaccid measurement, not erect.

Why Girth Matters for Sexual Satisfaction

Research suggests girth plays a meaningful role in physical sensation during intercourse. A study published in PLOS ONE used 3D-printed models to let women select their preferred size without the bias of self-reporting. Women chose a slightly larger circumference for one-time partners (5.0 inches / 12.7 cm) compared to long-term partners (4.8 inches / 12.2 cm). Both of these preferred sizes are close to the measured erect average, suggesting most men are already in or near the range women find satisfying.

About 27% of women in the study reported ending a relationship partly due to a size mismatch, and those who did were more likely to say the penis was too small rather than too large. That said, size is one factor among many. Arousal, comfort, communication, and technique consistently rank as stronger predictors of sexual satisfaction in broader research.

When Girth Is Medically Relevant

There is no standalone clinical diagnosis for “small girth.” The medical condition micropenis is defined strictly by length: a stretched penile length more than 2.5 standard deviations below the mean. In micropenis cases, the diameter-to-length ratio is typically normal, meaning girth scales proportionally. Only in rare cases involving severe underdevelopment of the internal erectile tissue is the diameter disproportionately small.

Most men who seek medical consultation about size turn out to be well within the normal range.
