Bag Balm contains just four ingredients: petrolatum (84.3%), lanolin, 8-hydroxyquinoline sulfate (0.3%), and paraffin wax. It’s a remarkably simple formula that has barely changed since a pharmacist in Wells River, Vermont, first mixed it in 1899 to soothe dry cow udders.
The Four Ingredients and What They Do
Petrolatum makes up the vast majority of Bag Balm at 84.3% and serves as the active skin protectant. It works by forming a physical barrier on the skin’s surface that locks in moisture and shields damaged skin from air, dirt, and friction. This is the same ingredient (often called petroleum jelly) found in products like Vaseline, and it’s one of the most effective occlusive moisturizers available.
Lanolin is listed as an inactive ingredient but does significant work. It’s a waxy substance extracted from sheep’s wool, and it closely mimics the natural oils your skin produces. Where petrolatum sits on top of the skin as a seal, lanolin absorbs into the upper layers and softens them from within. The combination of the two is what gives Bag Balm its reputation for healing severely cracked or chapped skin.
8-hydroxyquinoline sulfate is present at just 0.3% and acts as a mild antiseptic. It helps prevent bacterial growth both in the product itself and on minor cuts, scrapes, or cracked skin where you apply it. This was an important feature in the original formula, since cracked cow udders were prone to infection during milking.
Paraffin wax rounds out the formula. It gives the ointment its thick, semi-solid consistency, the kind that holds its shape in the iconic green tin but softens and spreads when you warm it between your fingers.
Why the Formula Works for So Many Uses
Bag Balm is officially marketed as a skin protectant for minor cuts, scrapes, and burns. It also temporarily protects and helps relieve chapped or cracked skin and lips, and it shields skin from the drying effects of wind and cold weather. That broad utility comes down to the petrolatum-lanolin combination, which is genuinely effective at creating a moisture barrier on any skin that’s dry, irritated, or exposed to harsh conditions.
People use it on hands, feet, elbows, lips, and anywhere skin cracks or roughens. Nurses, farmers, mechanics, and runners have all adopted it for the same basic reason: it coats damaged skin, keeps moisture in, and lets healing happen underneath. The formula doesn’t contain alcohol, fragrances, or common irritants, which is part of why it works on skin that’s already raw or broken.
The Pet Version
Bag Balm also sells a pet-specific product with the same core ingredients: petrolatum, lanolin, 8-hydroxyquinoline sulfate (0.3%), and paraffin wax. It’s marketed for use on paw pads, noses, and hot spots on dogs. The pet formula is designed to discourage licking with a no-sting, non-alcohol formulation. You massage it into paw pads or affected areas and let it sit for a softening effect.
What Bag Balm Doesn’t Contain
Part of Bag Balm’s appeal is what’s absent from the ingredient list. There are no added fragrances, no preservatives beyond the mild antiseptic, no alcohol, and no water. The lack of water is notable because it means the product doesn’t need the chemical preservatives that water-based lotions require to prevent mold and bacterial growth. Petrolatum and lanolin are naturally stable, so the formula essentially preserves itself.
This simplicity is also why the product has a distinctive smell that some people love and others tolerate. That slightly medicinal, woolly scent comes from the lanolin and the antiseptic compound, not from any added fragrance.
Classic Tin vs. Newer Formats
Bag Balm originally came only in its signature square green tin, available in 1-ounce and 8-ounce sizes. The company has since introduced tubes and other packaging for convenience, but the core formula remains the same petrolatum-lanolin-antiseptic combination.
