Bee propolis is a sticky, resin-like substance that honeybees make by collecting sap from trees and mixing it with their own enzymes and beeswax. Bees use it as a building material to seal cracks in the hive, reinforce the structure, and protect the colony from bacteria and fungi. Humans have used it for thousands of years as a natural remedy, and modern research has begun to clarify what it actually does in the body.
What Propolis Is Made Of
Raw propolis is roughly 50% plant resins, 30% waxes, 10% essential and aromatic oils, 5% pollen, and 5% other organic compounds. Bees collect the resin from a wide range of trees depending on where they live, including poplars, conifers, birch, pine, willow, and palm. This means propolis from a hive in Eastern Europe will have a noticeably different chemical makeup than propolis from a hive in Brazil or Mexico.
The compounds that matter most for health are flavonoids and phenolic acids, which together make up 40 to 70% of propolis balsam. Flavonoids are plant-based antioxidants that drive much of propolis’s biological activity. The remaining volatile compounds, mostly terpenoids, give propolis its distinctive resinous smell and contribute additional antioxidant and antimicrobial effects.
Green, Red, and Brown Varieties
Not all propolis is the same. The three most commonly sold types differ in color, plant source, and chemical profile.
- Green propolis comes primarily from Brazil, where bees forage on wild rosemary (Baccharis dracunculifolia). Its signature compound, artepillin C, makes up about 36% of its chemical profile and has documented antibacterial properties.
- Red propolis is found along the coast and mangroves of northeastern Brazil, sourced from a legume tree called Dalbergia ecastaphyllum. It contains roughly 68% formononetin, an isoflavone, and has shown stronger antioxidant activity than green propolis in comparative studies.
- Brown propolis is the most common worldwide variety. It draws from a wide mix of botanical sources including eucalyptus, citrus, and poplar, and has no single chemical marker. Its composition is the most variable.
When you see propolis supplements on a shelf, the type and geographic source are among the biggest factors determining what you’re actually getting. This variability is a real limitation: the European Food Safety Authority has rejected health claims for propolis partly because the flavonoid content shifts so much depending on raw materials and extraction methods.
How Propolis Affects Inflammation and Immunity
A 2025 meta-analysis of 27 randomized controlled trials found that propolis supplementation significantly reduced three key markers of inflammation: C-reactive protein (a general inflammation marker), interleukin-6 (a signaling molecule that drives chronic inflammation), and tumor necrosis factor-alpha (which plays a role in immune overreaction). At the same time, people taking propolis showed meaningful increases in total antioxidant capacity and glutathione, the body’s primary internal antioxidant.
The antibacterial effects work through a different pathway. Propolis appears to kill bacteria directly rather than just slowing their growth. One mechanism involves disrupting how bacteria communicate with each other, a process called quorum sensing, which bacteria rely on to coordinate infection. The flavonoid pinocembrin has been identified as a key player in this disruption. Researchers note that no single compound is responsible for propolis’s antimicrobial power. Instead, its hundreds of components appear to work together synergistically.
Oral Health Benefits
Propolis has been studied most concretely in dental applications. A phase II clinical trial found that using a 5% green propolis mouthwash twice daily for 90 days reduced gingival inflammation by 77% compared to baseline. This is a notable result, though it’s worth pointing out that lower concentrations (a 2% rinse tested in a separate trial) didn’t significantly outperform standard antiseptic mouthwash. Concentration seems to matter.
Propolis is now found in some commercial toothpastes, mouth sprays, and lozenges marketed for sore throat relief. Health Canada’s 2025 monograph formally recognizes oral propolis for relief of sore throat and mouth infections at doses between 0.2 and 0.6 grams of dried propolis per day.
Forms and Dosing
Propolis comes in several forms: alcohol-based tinctures, capsules, throat sprays, lozenges, and topical creams. Tinctures are the most traditional preparation and allow flexible dosing. Capsules offer convenience and standardized amounts. Sprays target the throat and mouth directly, which makes sense for sore throat or oral health uses.
There is no universally agreed-upon dose. One commonly cited safe threshold for general use is about 70 mg per day, while Health Canada caps its recommendation at 600 mg of dried propolis daily. Clinical trials have used a wide range, from small tincture doses to aqueous extracts taken for months. If you’re using propolis as an antioxidant supplement, Health Canada recommends not exceeding 0.6 grams per day and consulting a health professional for use beyond four weeks.
Allergies and Safety Concerns
Propolis allergy affects an estimated 1.2 to 6.6% of people who use it. The most common reactions are contact dermatitis, lip swelling, peeling of the lips, mouth pain, and in some cases difficulty breathing. The primary allergens are caffeic acid esters, a group of compounds found naturally in the resin. About 26 individual components have been linked to allergic reactions.
Cross-reactivity is a real concern. If you’re allergic to bee products, poplar tree products, or balsam of Peru (a resin used in cosmetics and fragrances), you have a higher risk of reacting to propolis. The allergenic compounds in propolis overlap with those found in many plant-derived products, so a reaction to propolis could signal sensitivity to other botanical ingredients as well. If you notice skin irritation, mouth sores, or any swelling after using a propolis product, stop using it immediately.
Propolis has not been well studied in pregnant or breastfeeding women, so most regulatory bodies advise caution in those groups. It also has no formal FDA approval as a drug or therapeutic agent in the United States. It is sold as a dietary supplement, which means quality and composition can vary significantly between brands.
