What Is Belief Perseverance and Why Does It Happen?

Belief perseverance is the tendency to cling to a belief even after the evidence that originally supported it has been thoroughly discredited or retracted. It’s one of the most stubborn cognitive biases in psychology, and it affects everyone. In a study of 876 people exposed to misinformation that was later corrected, roughly 42% continued to hold opinions shaped by the false information. The bias isn’t about stubbornness as a personality trait. It’s a predictable pattern in how human brains process and protect existing beliefs.

How Belief Perseverance Works

When you first form a belief, your brain doesn’t just store the conclusion. It builds a web of causal explanations around it. You develop reasons why the belief makes sense, connect it to other things you know, and weave it into your understanding of how the world works. When someone later pulls away the original evidence, that web of reasoning stays intact. The foundation is gone, but the structure built on top of it feels self-supporting.

This process happens largely outside conscious awareness. When people are motivated to maintain a belief, they generate justifications that feel perfectly reasonable to them, even though the reasoning is biased. The bias shows up in how people access memories, construct arguments, and evaluate new information. It’s not that people consciously decide to ignore the correction. Their brains simply do the work of protecting the belief before they’re aware it’s happening.

Belief Perseverance vs. Confirmation Bias

These two biases are related but distinct. Confirmation bias is about information-seeking: you tend to look for evidence that supports what you already believe and dismiss evidence that contradicts it. Belief perseverance goes a step further. Even when contradictory evidence isn’t just available but has been directly presented to you, and even when you acknowledge the original basis for your belief was wrong, you still hold the belief.

Think of confirmation bias as a filter on the way in, and belief perseverance as a lock on the way out. Confirmation bias helps beliefs form and strengthen. Belief perseverance keeps them alive after they should be dead.

Why the Brain Resists Corrections

Several psychological forces make belief perseverance so powerful.

Motivated reasoning is one of the biggest. When a belief is tied to something you want to be true, your brain works harder to protect it. Research from the APA has shown that motivation affects reasoning across many different situations. In one line of research, people’s desire for a particular outcome visibly distorted how they evaluated risk, because their motivation to believe something generated convincing-seeming justifications automatically.

Cognitive dissonance also plays a role. Accepting that a belief is wrong creates an uncomfortable tension between what you believed and what the evidence now shows. Letting go of the belief resolves the dissonance, but so does discounting the new evidence or finding alternative reasons to keep believing. The brain often takes the easier path.

Neuroimaging research has started to map what happens in the brain during belief updating. A meta-analysis of brain imaging studies found that a region called the precuneus is active both when people form beliefs and when they revise them. This area helps people mentally simulate alternative perspectives, essentially letting you see things from a different angle. Another region, the temporoparietal junction, also plays a key role. The findings suggest that forming a belief and changing one involve partially separate brain networks, which may help explain why changing a belief requires more cognitive effort than forming one in the first place.

The Role of Identity

Belief perseverance becomes especially strong when a belief is tied to who you are or the groups you belong to. Social identity theory describes how people merge their sense of self with the groups they identify with, whether political, religious, racial, or cultural. To maintain a positive identity, people are motivated to believe things that support their group and reject things that threaten it.

This is why beliefs about politically charged topics are so resistant to correction. The belief isn’t just an idea floating in your head. It’s connected to your sense of belonging, your relationships, and your understanding of who the “good guys” and “bad guys” are. Research has found that people are more likely to endorse unfounded theories after experiencing social exclusion, suggesting that the need to belong can actually drive people toward beliefs that reinforce group identity, regardless of evidence. Identity-based motivations can outweigh purely individual motivations when it comes to holding onto beliefs.

Common Examples

Belief perseverance shows up across everyday life. A first impression of someone as untrustworthy can persist even after you learn the original information was wrong or taken out of context. Political beliefs survive fact-checks with remarkable consistency. In professional settings, an initial business strategy can continue to feel “right” to its advocates long after performance data shows it’s failing.

One of the most well-known demonstrations comes from classic psychology experiments where participants read fabricated evidence for a belief (such as a supposed link between risk-taking and good firefighting performance), then were told the evidence was completely made up for the study. Even after the full debriefing, participants’ beliefs about firefighters and risk-taking barely budged. The retraction registered intellectually but didn’t undo the causal story their brains had already constructed.

Strategies That Actually Help

A 2024 study published in PLOS ONE tested several techniques for reducing belief perseverance and found meaningful differences in their effectiveness.

The most effective single technique was counter-speech: directly presenting convincing arguments against the specific false claims. This goes beyond simply saying “that’s wrong” and instead offers detailed, specific rebuttals that address the reasoning behind the misinformation. The second technique, awareness training, involves teaching people about belief perseverance itself, explaining how the bias works and how it might be distorting their thinking. This was effective but less so than direct counter-arguments.

The strongest results came from combining both approaches. When people first learned about belief perseverance as a bias and then received targeted counter-arguments, the effect was significantly larger than either technique alone. Across 364 participants who showed the bias, the combined approach produced a statistically meaningful reduction with a moderate effect size.

There’s also a well-known technique called “consider the opposite,” where you deliberately generate reasons why your belief might be wrong. This works because it disrupts the one-sided causal reasoning that keeps the belief alive. Instead of only having explanations for why the belief is true, you’re forced to build an alternative framework, which gives your brain something to replace the old belief with rather than just a void.

The core insight across all these strategies is the same: simply telling someone their belief is wrong almost never works. The causal explanations supporting the belief need to be replaced, not just removed. Corrections that provide an alternative explanation for why things happened the way they did are far more effective than corrections that just say “that was false.”
