Biometric data collection is the process of capturing and storing physical or behavioral characteristics that can identify you as a unique individual. This includes traits you’re probably already sharing daily, like your fingerprint when you unlock your phone or your face when you pass through airport security. The global biometric system market reached an estimated $58.46 billion in 2026 and is projected to more than double to $134 billion by 2032, reflecting how rapidly this technology is weaving into everyday life.
What Counts as Biometric Data
Biometric data falls into two broad categories: physiological and behavioral. Physiological biometrics rely on physical, relatively stable features of your body. Your fingerprints, the pattern of your iris, the contours of your face, and even the geometry of veins in your hands all qualify. These traits don’t change much over time, which is what makes them useful for identification.
Behavioral biometrics are less obvious. These systems capture the way you move and interact with devices rather than what your body looks like. Your walking pattern (known as gait analysis), the rhythm and pressure of your keystrokes, your voice, your signature style, and even your eye movement patterns can all be measured, recorded, and used to confirm your identity. Some of these involve voluntary actions, like signing your name. Others, like your heartbeat rhythm, are involuntary.
The distinction matters because behavioral biometrics are harder to fake. Someone might replicate your fingerprint from a surface you touched, but mimicking the exact pressure, speed, and rhythm of your typing is far more difficult.
Where Biometric Collection Happens
The most common place you encounter biometric collection is your own phone. Roughly 68% of people who use facial recognition technology use it to unlock phones, laptops, or personal computers. But collection extends well beyond personal devices.
Airports and border control agencies scan faces and fingerprints to verify travelers. Employers use fingerprint or iris scanners for building access and time tracking. Banks are integrating voice recognition and facial scans into their apps. Hospitals are exploring biometric patient identification to reduce errors. U.S. studies have estimated that between 1,300 and 2,700 adverse events related to wrong-patient or wrong-procedure mistakes occur in American hospitals each year, and automated biometric identification systems aim to shrink that number by catching mismatches before treatment begins.
Retail stores, stadiums, and public spaces increasingly use facial recognition cameras for security, sometimes without the knowledge of the people being scanned. This is where biometric collection gets controversial.
How Your Data Gets Stored
When a device captures your fingerprint or face, it doesn’t typically store a photograph. Instead, the system converts your biometric trait into a scrambled mathematical representation, sometimes called a template. This encoded string is what gets checked against future scans to verify your identity. As Cornell University’s IT security team explains, the complexity of these formulas means no one can reconstruct your actual fingerprint or face from the stored data.
That said, not every system works this way. Some databases store raw biometric images, particularly in law enforcement and government systems. The security of those databases varies enormously, and a breach of raw biometric data is far more serious than a stolen password.
Why Biometric Breaches Are Different
If someone steals your password, you change it. If someone steals your fingerprint data, you can’t grow new fingers. This is the core risk that separates biometric data from every other form of personal information. Once compromised, the data is compromised permanently.
Biometrics are generally considered more secure than passwords for everyday authentication because they’re unique to you and can’t be guessed. But that same uniqueness creates a paradox: the traits that make biometrics strong identifiers also make them irreplaceable if they’re leaked. A large-scale breach of a biometric database could affect millions of people with no practical remedy.
Bias in Facial Recognition
Not all biometric systems work equally well for everyone. Facial recognition technology, in particular, has well-documented accuracy gaps across different skin tones. Joy Buolamwini, a researcher at MIT, discovered the problem firsthand when facial analysis software failed to detect her face entirely, while recognizing lighter-skinned faces without issue.
The root cause is training data. Facial recognition algorithms learn from large image datasets, and those datasets have historically overrepresented lighter-skinned individuals. Even when developers don’t deliberately filter by skin tone, the images available online and in media archives skew toward lighter-skinned people. The result is software that performs well for some demographic groups and poorly for others, raising serious concerns when these systems are used in policing, hiring, or public surveillance.
Laws That Protect Your Biometric Data
Legal protections for biometric data vary dramatically depending on where you live. Two frameworks stand out as the most influential.
Illinois BIPA
The Illinois Biometric Information Privacy Act is the strongest biometric privacy law in the United States. It requires any private company collecting biometric identifiers to inform you in writing that your data is being collected, explain the specific purpose and how long it will be stored, and obtain your written consent before collection begins. Companies must also publish a retention schedule and permanently destroy biometric data either when its original purpose has been fulfilled or within three years of your last interaction with that company, whichever comes first. Crucially, BIPA allows individuals to sue for violations, which has led to significant class-action settlements against tech and retail companies.
GDPR in Europe
The European Union’s General Data Protection Regulation classifies biometric data used for identification as a “special category” of personal data, placing it alongside health records, genetic data, and information about race or sexual orientation. Processing this data is prohibited by default, with limited exceptions. The most common exception is explicit consent, meaning you must actively agree to the collection for a clearly stated purpose. Other exceptions include employment law obligations, protecting someone’s vital interests when they can’t consent, and processing necessary for substantial public interest under specific legal safeguards.
Most U.S. states have no dedicated biometric privacy law. Texas and Washington have their own statutes, but without the private right to sue that makes Illinois BIPA so impactful. Several other states have introduced biometric bills in recent legislative sessions, and the patchwork is growing.
What You Can Do About It
You interact with biometric collection more often than you might realize, but you’re not powerless over it. On your personal devices, biometric authentication is optional. You can use a PIN or password instead if you prefer not to store a fingerprint or face template on your phone. Check your device settings to see exactly which apps have access to biometric data.
For workplace or commercial collection, your rights depend on your location. If you’re in Illinois, companies must get your written consent before scanning your face or fingerprint. In the EU, you can withdraw consent and request deletion of your biometric data. In most other places, read the privacy policy (specifically sections on biometric or sensitive data) before opting in to loyalty programs, apps, or workplace systems that use biometric identification.
When you do consent to biometric collection, look for systems that store mathematical templates rather than raw images. Ask whether data is stored on your device (more secure) or in a centralized cloud database (higher breach risk). These details are often buried in privacy disclosures, but they make a meaningful difference to your long-term exposure if something goes wrong.
