How Clindamycin Works

Clindamycin stops bacteria from growing by interfering with their ability to make proteins. It attaches to a specific part of the bacterial ribosome (the machinery bacteria use to build proteins) and physically blocks the process of assembling new protein chains. Without functional proteins, bacteria can’t reproduce or repair themselves. This makes clindamycin effective against a wide range of bacteria, particularly the types that cause skin infections, abscesses, and bone infections.

One reason clindamycin is especially useful is that it penetrates well into bone, skin, and abscesses, reaching areas where some antibiotics struggle to get in effective concentrations. How to Take the 300 mg Capsule

Clindamycin 300 mg capsules are typically taken every six to eight hours, meaning three to four times per day depending on the severity of the infection. Your prescriber will determine the exact schedule and duration based on what’s being treated. Most courses run 7 to 14 days, though bone infections may require much longer treatment.

Take each capsule with a full glass of water to prevent it from irritating your esophagus. You can take it with or without food, but taking it with a meal may reduce stomach upset. Don’t lie down for at least 10 to 30 minutes after swallowing the capsule. Finish the entire course even if you start feeling better after a few days, since stopping early can allow the infection to come back and potentially make the bacteria harder to treat.

Here’s what happens: clindamycin kills many types of bacteria, including the beneficial ones that normally live in your colon. When those protective bacteria are wiped out, C. diff can multiply unchecked and produce toxins that inflame the lining of the colon. The resulting illness, called C. diff-associated diarrhea or colitis, ranges from mild watery diarrhea to severe, life-threatening inflammation of the colon.

The tricky part is timing. C. diff symptoms can appear during treatment or up to two months after you’ve finished the antibiotic. Who Should Not Take Clindamycin
