False consensus effect is the tendency to overestimate how many people share your opinions and values. You assume your preferences are “normal” and that people who disagree are outliers.

How Biases Affect Medical Decisions
Cognitive bias in healthcare can have life-or-death consequences. A case study published in the Cleveland Clinic Journal of Medicine illustrates this starkly. A patient was admitted with cough and shortness of breath, and multiple physicians on the team locked onto a diagnosis of heart failure early in the process. This is anchoring bias in action: they fixated on the most obvious features of the case and failed to adjust as new information came in.
An echocardiogram ordered on the first day got lost in a reading queue for four days. When it finally came back, it showed no evidence of heart failure at all. Meanwhile, the team didn’t discover until day four that the patient had been receiving a powerful immune-suppressing medication for rheumatoid arthritis. The patient continued to decline and died two weeks later. The autopsy revealed miliary tuberculosis, a diagnosis that was never seriously considered.
This kind of error has a name: premature closure, the tendency to stop considering alternatives once you’ve landed on a diagnosis that seems to fit. Bias in Financial Decisions
Loss aversion, one of the central findings from Kahneman and Tversky’s 1979 prospect theory research, describes how losses feel roughly twice as painful as equivalent gains feel good. This asymmetry drives a number of irrational financial behaviors. Investors frequently hold onto declining stocks far longer than makes economic sense because selling would mean “locking in” a loss, which feels worse than watching the value continue to drop.

The most fundamental strategy is simply learning that these biases exist and how they operate. This is sometimes called “bias inoculation.” Once you can name a bias, you’re more likely to notice it in your own reasoning. It doesn’t make you immune, but it creates a moment of friction where your analytical mind can engage.
Metacognition, or thinking about your own thinking, is a more active version of this. It involves deliberately disengaging from your gut reaction and checking it against the evidence. One practical technique is to slow down. Research consistently shows that accuracy suffers when conclusions are reached too quickly and improves when you give yourself more time to consider alternatives.
The “consider the opposite” strategy has strong experimental support. When people are explicitly asked to think about why their initial judgment might be wrong, the result is measurably less biased decisions. This works for personality judgments, probability estimates, and diagnostic reasoning alike. It counteracts confirmation bias directly by forcing you to engage with disconfirming evidence.
Finally, cultivating a general habit of skepticism helps. The default tendency in human thinking is to believe rather than disbelieve.
