Communication sciences and disorders (CSD) is the study of how humans produce, process, and understand speech, language, and hearing, along with what happens when any of those systems break down. The field trains professionals who prevent, diagnose, and treat communication and swallowing problems across the entire lifespan. It produces two main types of clinicians: speech-language pathologists and audiologists. About 1 in 14 U.S. children ages 3 to 17 has had a voice, speech, or language disorder in the past year, and nearly 18 million adults report voice problems annually, so the demand for these professionals is substantial and growing.
What the Field Covers
CSD sits at the intersection of health science, linguistics, psychology, and physics. Undergraduate students build a foundation in anatomy and physiology of the mouth, throat, and ear; the acoustic properties of sound; child language development; and psychological principles of learning and behavior. Statistics and research methods round out the curriculum because the field relies heavily on evidence-based practice.
That scientific base supports two broad clinical tracks. Speech-language pathology focuses on communication and swallowing disorders. Audiology focuses on hearing, balance, and related auditory problems. Both tracks serve people of every age, from newborns who fail a hearing screening to older adults recovering from a stroke.
Speech-Language Pathology
Speech-language pathologists (SLPs) work with anyone who has difficulty producing speech sounds, understanding or using language, reading, writing, or swallowing safely. In children, the most common issues are speech sound disorders (affecting 8 to 9 percent of young children), developmental language disorder (about 7 percent, or 1 in 14 children), and stuttering. By first grade, roughly 5 percent of children have a noticeable speech disorder of some kind.
In adults, the conditions look different. Aphasia, a language disorder typically caused by stroke, affects about 2 million Americans, with nearly 180,000 new cases each year. SLPs also treat voice disorders, cognitive communication problems after traumatic brain injury, and language difficulties associated with progressive neurological conditions like Parkinson’s disease or ALS.
One area that surprises many people is swallowing. SLPs are considered the preferred providers for diagnosing and managing swallowing disorders (dysphagia) because of their deep knowledge of the anatomy and physiology of the throat. Intervention can include exercises to strengthen the muscles involved in swallowing, changes to food and liquid textures, compensatory posture strategies, and education for caregivers. ASHA even offers a board certification specifically in swallowing disorders for SLPs who want to specialize further.
Audiology
Audiologists specialize in evaluating hearing and helping people manage hearing loss and balance disorders. Their day-to-day work includes conducting hearing tests, helping patients and families understand their communication options, selecting appropriate hearing devices, and programming those devices for each individual’s needs. Pediatric audiologists are specifically trained to test and treat children of all ages, including infants who can’t yet describe what they hear.
The scope extends beyond hearing aids. Audiologists work with cochlear implants, assistive listening systems, and tinnitus management programs. They also evaluate and treat balance disorders that originate in the inner ear.
Technology in the Field
CSD professionals increasingly rely on technology to help their clients communicate. Augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) refers to any system that supports or replaces spoken language. Low-tech options include picture exchange systems, where a child hands over a card showing what they want. High-tech options include tablet-based speech-generating devices that produce spoken words when a user selects symbols on a screen. These tools provide immediate feedback and can be customized to match a person’s vocabulary and daily routines.
For children with reading and learning difficulties, specialized software has shown real results. Eye-tracking reading tools have improved reading comprehension scores by 24 percent in students with dyslexia, and text-to-speech programs have helped children spell significantly better than chance. Symbol-based systems have also proven effective at building vocabulary and encouraging natural back-and-forth conversation in both children and adults with complex communication needs.
Education and Certification
CSD starts as an undergraduate major at many universities, but clinical practice requires graduate education. To become a speech-language pathologist, you need a master’s degree. To become an audiologist, you need a clinical doctorate (typically an AuD). Both paths require supervised clinical practicum hours under a certified professional who has at least nine months of full-time clinical experience. At least half of that practicum must happen in person with real clients, though up to 40 percent can occur through telepractice.
After completing the degree, candidates must pass a national exam (the Praxis) and obtain the Certificate of Clinical Competence from the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association. A passing Praxis score must be earned no more than five years before applying and no later than two years after submitting the application. Most states also require their own license to practice.
For those drawn to research or teaching, a PhD in CSD opens doors to careers as a professor, researcher, or program administrator in a university setting.
Where CSD Professionals Work
The work settings are remarkably varied. SLPs and audiologists practice in public and private schools, children’s hospitals, VA and acute care hospitals, skilled nursing facilities, private practices, Head Start and preschool programs, and camps for children with special needs. School-based positions make up one of the largest employment categories for SLPs, while audiologists are more commonly found in hospitals, private practices, and ENT clinics.
Career Outlook and Pay
The job market for CSD professionals is strong. Employment of speech-language pathologists is projected to grow 15 percent from 2024 to 2034, well above the average for all occupations. The median annual salary for SLPs was $95,410 as of May 2024. Audiologists earned a median of $92,120 over the same period. An aging population, greater awareness of developmental disorders, and expanded insurance coverage for therapy services all contribute to sustained demand.
Who Communication Disorders Affect
Communication disorders are not evenly distributed. Boys ages 3 to 17 are nearly twice as likely as girls to have a voice, speech, or language disorder (9.1 percent versus 5.2 percent). Prevalence is highest in the youngest children: 10.8 percent of kids ages 3 to 6 are affected, compared to 4.3 percent of those ages 11 to 17. Among children who do have a communication disorder, about a third of those under 10 have more than one type simultaneously.
Racial disparities also exist. Nearly 1 in 11 Black children (8.9 percent) has a voice, speech, or language disorder, compared to 7.3 percent of White children and 6.4 percent of Hispanic children. These numbers reflect both differences in risk factors and differences in access to early identification and treatment, which is exactly the kind of gap CSD professionals are trained to address.
