What Is Considered a High Pulse Rate by Age?

A resting heart rate above 100 beats per minute is generally considered high for adults. The medical term for this is tachycardia, and it applies when your heart consistently beats faster than 100 BPM while you’re sitting or lying down, calm, and not exercising. But “high” is relative. What counts as too fast depends on your age, your fitness level, and what you’re doing at the time.

Normal Resting Heart Rate for Adults

The American Heart Association defines a normal resting heart rate as 60 to 100 beats per minute for adults who are sitting or lying down, feeling calm and well. That’s a wide range, and where you fall within it depends on factors like genetics, fitness, medications, and hydration. A person whose resting pulse sits at 65 BPM and another at 95 BPM can both be perfectly healthy.

That said, research consistently links a lower resting heart rate with better cardiovascular fitness. Well-trained endurance athletes often have resting heart rates in the 40s or 50s because their hearts pump more blood per beat, so they don’t need to beat as often. For someone like that, a resting pulse of 85 could signal something is off, even though it falls within the “normal” range for the general population. Context matters more than a single number.

What Counts as High in Children

Children naturally have faster heart rates than adults, especially infants. A newborn’s awake heart rate can range from 85 to 205 BPM, which would be alarming in an adult but is completely normal for a baby. Between 3 months and 2 years, the awake range is about 100 to 190 BPM. From ages 2 to 10, it drops to 60 to 140. By age 10 and older, children settle into the adult range of 60 to 100 BPM.

Because these ranges are so broad, a “high” pulse in a child means something different at every stage. A toddler with a heart rate of 160 while running around is normal. The same number in a calm 8-year-old sitting on a couch would be worth investigating.

High Pulse During Exercise

Your heart rate is supposed to climb during physical activity, so the question shifts from “Is 100 too high?” to “Am I exceeding my safe range?” You can estimate your maximum heart rate by multiplying your age by 0.7 and subtracting the result from 208. For a 40-year-old, that works out to roughly 180 BPM.

Moderate exercise typically puts you at 50% to 70% of your maximum heart rate. Vigorous exercise pushes you to 70% to 85%. Going above 85% of your max for extended periods isn’t recommended for most people and can feel like you’re gasping for air or unable to speak. If your pulse shoots well past your estimated max during light or moderate activity, that’s worth paying attention to.

Common Causes of a High Resting Pulse

Plenty of everyday factors push your resting heart rate above its usual baseline without any underlying heart problem. Caffeine, dehydration, poor sleep, stress, anxiety, fever, and certain medications (especially decongestants and some asthma inhalers) can all elevate your pulse temporarily. Alcohol and nicotine do the same. In most cases, your heart rate returns to normal once the trigger is removed.

Some people experience a sharp rise in heart rate simply from standing up. A condition called postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome, or POTS, is diagnosed when your heart rate increases by at least 30 BPM within 10 minutes of standing (40 BPM in adolescents). POTS isn’t about having a high heart rate all the time. It’s about an exaggerated response to a change in position, and it often comes with dizziness, brain fog, and fatigue.

Chronic conditions like anemia, an overactive thyroid, and infections can also keep your pulse elevated for days or weeks. When your body isn’t getting enough oxygen per beat (as in anemia) or your metabolism is running too fast (as with thyroid problems), the heart compensates by beating more often.

Symptoms That Signal a Problem

A high pulse by itself isn’t always dangerous. Many people occasionally notice their heart racing and it resolves on its own. But certain symptoms alongside a fast heart rate point to something more serious:

  • Chest pain or pressure
  • Shortness of breath that feels out of proportion to your activity
  • Dizziness or lightheadedness
  • Fainting or near-fainting
  • Unusual weakness

These symptoms suggest the heart is beating fast but not pumping blood effectively, which means your brain and organs aren’t getting what they need. This combination warrants immediate medical attention.

How a High Pulse Is Evaluated

If your resting heart rate is consistently above 100 BPM or you’re having episodes of rapid heartbeat with symptoms, the first test is usually an electrocardiogram (ECG or EKG). It takes just a few minutes: small sticky patches are placed on your chest to record your heart’s electrical activity and identify whether the rhythm is normal or abnormal.

The tricky part is that many people have episodes of fast heart rate that come and go, so a quick in-office ECG might miss them entirely. For those cases, a Holter monitor (a portable device worn for a day or more) can record your heart’s activity around the clock during normal daily life. If episodes are less frequent, an event monitor worn for about 30 days lets you press a button when you feel symptoms, capturing the rhythm at that exact moment. Some newer devices detect irregular rhythms automatically.

An echocardiogram uses sound waves to create a moving image of your heart, showing how well the chambers and valves are working. This helps determine whether a fast heart rate is causing structural changes or whether a structural problem is driving the fast rate. Additional tests like chest X-rays or a tilt table test (where you’re strapped to a table that shifts from flat to upright while your heart rate and blood pressure are monitored) may be used depending on the suspected cause.

Lowering a High Resting Heart Rate

For people whose resting heart rate runs high without a clear medical cause, lifestyle changes can make a meaningful difference. Regular aerobic exercise is the most reliable way to bring your resting pulse down over time. Even moderate activity like brisk walking, done consistently, strengthens the heart so it moves more blood per beat and doesn’t need to beat as frequently at rest.

Cutting back on caffeine, staying well hydrated, managing stress, and getting adequate sleep all help. Chronic stress keeps the body in a fight-or-flight state that directly raises heart rate. Techniques like slow, deep breathing can lower your pulse in real time by activating the branch of your nervous system that tells the heart to slow down. If you track your resting heart rate over weeks or months using a fitness tracker or by checking your pulse each morning before getting out of bed, you’ll get a much more useful picture than any single reading can provide.
