What Is Considered Normal Body Temperature?

Normal body temperature for most adults falls in the range of 97.0°F to 99.0°F (36.1°C to 37.2°C), not the single number most of us grew up memorizing. The old 98.6°F standard dates back to the 1860s, and modern research shows that average human body temperature has actually dropped since then. Your own “normal” shifts throughout the day, varies by age, and depends on where on your body you measure it.

Where 98.6°F Came From

In the mid-1800s, a German physician named Carl Wunderlich measured armpit temperatures from about 25,000 people and found the average was 98.6°F (37°C). That number became the textbook standard for more than 150 years. But Wunderlich’s methods were limited by the technology of his era, and armpit readings tend to run lower than oral or rectal ones, which makes the precision of that single number somewhat misleading.

The Average Has Dropped Over Time

A large-scale study published in eLife analyzed temperature data from three time periods: Civil War veterans (1860–1940), a national health survey from the early 1970s, and a Stanford medical database covering 2007–2017. Together, these datasets included nearly 190,000 people. The finding was striking: average body temperature has declined by about 0.03°C per decade of birth, steadily and consistently.

Men born in the early 1800s had temperatures roughly 0.59°C (about 1°F) higher than men today. Women showed a similar decline of about 0.32°C since the 1890s. Overall, the average human body temperature in high-income countries is now about 1.6% lower than in the pre-industrial era. The reasons aren’t fully settled, but reduced rates of chronic infection, better nutrition, and climate-controlled living environments are leading explanations.

For a modern adult, a reading around 97.5°F to 97.9°F is closer to a true average than the classic 98.6°F.

Your Temperature Changes Throughout the Day

Body temperature follows a predictable daily cycle. It hits its lowest point in the early morning, typically between 6 and 8 a.m., and peaks in the evening around 7 to 9 p.m. This swing can be as much as 1°F or slightly more, which means a reading of 97.4°F at 7 a.m. and 98.8°F at 8 p.m. could both be perfectly normal for the same person.

Several other factors push your temperature up or down on any given day:

  • Ovulation: Body temperature rises by roughly 0.3°C (about half a degree Fahrenheit) after ovulation, which is the basis for basal body temperature tracking as a fertility method.
  • Physical activity: Exercise raises core temperature temporarily, sometimes significantly.
  • Stress and sleep disruption: Both can shift your baseline reading.
  • Alcohol: Drinking can alter temperature regulation.
  • Travel across time zones: Jet lag can temporarily disrupt your body’s thermal rhythm.
  • Medications: Some drugs affect temperature as a side effect.

How Age Affects Normal Temperature

Infants and young children tend to run warmer than adults, partly because their metabolisms are faster relative to their body size. Older adults tend to run cooler. A healthy 75-year-old might register a baseline temperature well below 98°F without anything being wrong. This matters because a fever in an older person may look like a “normal” number on the thermometer. A reading of 99.5°F might not seem alarming, but for someone whose baseline sits around 97°F, it represents a significant rise.

Where You Measure Matters

The number on your thermometer depends on where you place it. Rectal readings are the most accurate reflection of core body temperature and tend to run the highest. Oral readings are slightly lower but still reliable. Armpit readings run lower still, and ear and forehead readings fall somewhere in between, with more variability.

As a rough guide, rectal temperatures read about 0.5°F to 1°F higher than oral temperatures, while armpit temperatures read about 0.5°F to 1°F lower than oral. There’s no precise formula for converting between sites, though, because the difference varies from person to person and reading to reading.

Forehead (temporal artery) thermometers are convenient but can be thrown off by sweating, direct sunlight, cold air, or holding the device too far from the skin. Ear thermometers can give unreliable results in infants younger than 7 months, and earwax or ear infections can interfere with readings at any age. For the most consistent home readings, an oral digital thermometer is a solid choice.

When a Temperature Becomes a Fever

The CDC defines a fever as a measured temperature of 100.4°F (38°C) or higher. This threshold is widely used in clinical and public health settings.

For children, the fever cutoff depends on measurement site. A rectal, ear, or forehead temperature of 100.4°F or higher qualifies as a fever. For oral readings, the threshold is 100°F (37.8°C). For armpit readings, it’s 99°F (37.2°C). These different numbers reflect the natural temperature gaps between measurement sites, not different definitions of fever.

A temperature in the 99°F to 100.3°F range is sometimes called a “low-grade fever,” though it can also simply reflect normal daily fluctuation, recent exercise, or a warm environment. Context matters more than a single reading.

When a Temperature Is Too Low

On the other end of the spectrum, hypothermia begins when core body temperature drops below 95°F (35°C). This is a medical emergency. It most often results from prolonged cold exposure, but it can also develop in older adults living in poorly heated homes or in people with certain medical conditions that impair temperature regulation. Early signs include intense shivering, confusion, and slurred speech.

Finding Your Own Baseline

Because “normal” spans a range, knowing your personal baseline is more useful than comparing yourself to a single number. If you take your temperature a few times over several days using the same thermometer and the same body site, at similar times of day, you’ll start to see your own pattern. Most healthy adults will land somewhere between 97°F and 99°F orally, with morning readings at the low end and evening readings at the high end. That personal baseline makes it much easier to tell when something is genuinely off.
