CYL stands for “cylinder,” and it’s the number on your glasses prescription that measures how much astigmatism you have. If your prescription has a CYL value, it means one surface of your eye is curved unevenly, and your lenses need to correct for that irregular shape. Not everyone has a CYL number. If the space is blank or marked “SPH” (sphere only), you don’t have astigmatism that needs correcting.

What CYL Actually Corrects

A perfectly round eye is shaped like a basketball. Light hits the curved surface evenly and focuses at a single point. An eye with astigmatism is shaped more like a football or an egg, where one curve is steeper than the other. This means light bends differently depending on where it enters the eye, so it focuses at two different points instead of one. The result is blurry or distorted vision at any distance.

The CYL value on your prescription tells the lab how much extra lens power is needed to compensate for that second, mismatched curve. It’s measured in diopters, just like your sphere (SPH) number, and it can carry a minus sign or a plus sign. A minus CYL corrects nearsighted astigmatism, while a plus CYL corrects farsighted astigmatism. Both do the same job from different starting points.

How to Find CYL on Your Prescription

Your prescription will have columns labeled SPH, CYL, and Axis, with a row for each eye (OD for the right eye, OS for the left). The CYL value sits in the second column. A typical entry might look like this:

  • SPH: -2.00
  • CYL: -1.25
  • Axis: 90

In this example, the eye has 1.25 diopters of astigmatism. The SPH corrects overall nearsightedness, while the CYL corrects the uneven curvature on top of that.

Why Axis Always Accompanies CYL

If you have a CYL number, you’ll always have an Axis number right next to it. The axis tells the lens maker where to position the cylinder correction, expressed as an angle between 1 and 180 degrees. Think of it like a clock dial overlaid on your eye. A higher axis number doesn’t mean stronger astigmatism. It simply means the irregular curve sits at a different angle. Axis 90, for instance, means the correction runs vertically, while axis 180 runs horizontally.

Getting the axis wrong even by a few degrees can make your glasses feel uncomfortable or blurry, which is why your eye doctor measures it carefully during the refraction test (the “which is better, one or two?” part of your exam).

What Different CYL Values Mean

The size of your CYL number tells you how much astigmatism you’re dealing with. General ranges break down like this:

  • Mild: less than 1.00 diopter
  • Moderate: 1.00 to 2.00 diopters
  • Severe: 2.00 to 3.00 diopters
  • Extreme: more than 3.00 diopters

Most people with astigmatism fall in the mild to moderate range. A CYL of -0.25 or -0.50 is very common, and some doctors won’t even prescribe a correction that small if it isn’t bothering you. Once you get above -1.50 or so, the difference with and without correction becomes very noticeable.

What Uncorrected Astigmatism Looks Like

Without the right CYL correction, vision doesn’t just look blurry the way nearsightedness or farsightedness does. Astigmatism produces a specific kind of distortion: ghosting or shadowed images, where you see a faint second copy of text or objects slightly offset from the real one. Street lights and headlights at night may streak or flare. Fine print can look smeared rather than sharp. You might also notice eye strain and headaches after reading or screen time, because your eyes are constantly working to compensate for the uneven focus.

These symptoms can be subtle with mild astigmatism. Many people don’t realize how much clearer their vision could be until they get their first pair of glasses with a cylinder correction and suddenly see crisp edges they didn’t know they were missing.

CYL in Contact Lenses vs. Glasses

If you wear contact lenses, your CYL value may differ slightly from your glasses prescription. Contacts sit directly on your eye rather than about 12 millimeters in front of it, so the effective power changes a bit. Contact lenses that correct astigmatism are called toric lenses, and they’re designed with different powers along different meridians of the lens, matching the cylinder and axis from your prescription. Because contacts can rotate on your eye, toric lenses include a stabilization feature to keep the axis aligned correctly throughout the day.

Can Your CYL Change Over Time?

Astigmatism can shift gradually. Children’s CYL values often change as their eyes grow, and adults may see slow changes over years. A small increase between exams, like going from -0.75 to -1.00, is normal. Large or sudden changes are less common and worth discussing with your eye care provider, since they can occasionally signal changes in the cornea’s structure. In most cases, though, your CYL stays relatively stable once you reach adulthood, and any adjustments at your next exam are minor tweaks rather than dramatic jumps.
