DCP as a Bone Fracture Plate
In orthopedic surgery, DCP stands for dynamic compression plate. It is a stainless steel plate secured to bone with screws to hold a fracture together while it heals. The plate’s defining feature is a specially shaped screw hole: the holes are sloped so that when a screw is placed slightly off-center, tightening it causes the bone fragment to slide toward the fracture line, squeezing the broken ends together.
This compression serves a specific biological purpose. By eliminating any tiny gaps or movement between the broken bone surfaces, the plate creates conditions for what surgeons call primary bone healing. Instead of the body forming a bulky cartilage bridge (callus) around the fracture, the bone can knit directly across the break. Dicalcium phosphate (DCP) appears on ingredient lists in two roles: as a calcium and phosphorus supplement for people who don’t get enough from food, and as an inactive filler or binder in tablet manufacturing. As a supplement, it provides both calcium and phosphate, making it useful for bone health. People with kidney problems, a history of calcium-based kidney stones, or sarcoidosis generally need to avoid calcium phosphate supplements because their bodies handle calcium or phosphate differently.
Calcium phosphate compounds also show up in dental care. Products containing forms of calcium phosphate are designed to deliver calcium and phosphate ions to tooth enamel, promoting remineralization of early decay. In clinical testing, calcium phosphate pastes paired with fluoride successfully repaired artificial enamel lesions, performing comparably to standard fluoride toothpaste. The benefit is incremental rather than dramatic: these products support what fluoride already does rather than replacing it.
