Engine torque is the rotational force your engine produces to turn the crankshaft and ultimately spin the wheels. It’s what gets your car moving from a stop, pulls heavy loads up hills, and creates that push-you-back-in-your-seat feeling when you hit the gas. While horsepower gets most of the attention in car ads, torque is the more fundamental measurement of what your engine actually does.
How Torque Works in an Engine
Torque is the product of force and distance from a pivot point. In an engine, that pivot point is the crankshaft. When fuel ignites inside a cylinder, the expanding gases push a piston downward. That piston is connected to the crankshaft by a connecting rod, and as the piston pushes down, it rotates the crankshaft. The amount of twisting force created at the crankshaft is the engine’s torque.
Think of it like using a wrench on a bolt. The longer the wrench handle (distance) and the harder you push (force), the more torque you generate. In an engine, the “wrench handle” is essentially the stroke length of the piston and the geometry of the crankshaft, while the “push” comes from combustion pressure. This is why diesel engines, which use longer piston strokes to compress air for ignition, tend to produce more torque than gasoline engines of similar size.
Torque vs. Horsepower
Torque measures how much work is being done. Horsepower measures how fast that work is being done. The two are mathematically linked by a simple formula: Horsepower equals Torque times RPM, divided by 5,252. That constant (5,252) comes from converting James Watt’s original definition of horsepower into rotational terms.
Because of this formula, torque and horsepower always equal each other at exactly 5,252 RPM. Below that engine speed, torque is the higher number. Above it, horsepower takes over. If you’ve ever seen a dyno chart where the torque and horsepower lines cross, that intersection is always at 5,252 RPM.
In practical terms, torque is what you feel when accelerating from a stop or merging onto a highway at low speeds. Horsepower is what sustains performance at higher speeds, where air resistance becomes the dominant force your engine fights against. Truck commercials emphasize torque because towing demands a lot of low-speed pulling force. Sports car ads highlight horsepower because top speed and high-RPM performance sell the fantasy.
What a Torque Curve Tells You
A torque curve is a graph showing how much torque an engine produces at each RPM, measured with the throttle wide open. Engineers create this by running the engine on a dynamometer, adjusting the load at various speeds, and recording the maximum torque the engine can sustain without losing RPM. Each point on the curve represents the most resistance the engine can overcome at that speed.
The shape of this curve matters more than the peak number alone. An engine that produces strong torque across a wide RPM range feels responsive and flexible in everyday driving. You can accelerate in a higher gear without downshifting, pass on the highway without waiting for the engine to wind up, and pull away from stops smoothly. An engine with a narrow torque peak might hit an impressive number on paper but feel sluggish outside that sweet spot.
Peak torque RPM also determines how a vehicle should be geared. For maximum pulling ability (like towing), the ideal setup lets the engine operate right at its peak torque RPM under load. If the gearing allows the engine to rev past that point, it’s actually producing less torque. If the gearing keeps the engine below that point, same problem.
How Gears Multiply Torque
The torque your engine produces at the crankshaft is not the same torque that reaches the wheels. Your transmission and final drive gears multiply it. The formula is straightforward: wheel torque equals engine torque times the gear ratio. A first-gear ratio of 3.5 to 1, for example, triples the engine’s torque output before it ever reaches the tires.
This is why first gear feels so much more powerful than fifth gear, even though the engine might be producing similar torque at similar RPMs. Lower gears provide higher multiplication, giving you the force needed to overcome inertia from a standstill. Higher gears reduce that multiplication in exchange for speed. It’s also why downshifting before passing someone on the highway works: you’re trading wheel speed for more torque at the wheels.
Why Torque Matters for Towing
Moving a heavy trailer from a dead stop requires enormous rotational force at low engine speeds. A vehicle with 400 lb-ft of torque available at 1,500 RPM can begin moving a heavy load smoothly, while one that needs to reach 5,000 RPM for peak torque would struggle or require much lower gearing to compensate. This is why heavy-duty trucks and commercial vehicles almost universally use diesel engines, which produce their peak torque at much lower RPMs than gasoline engines.
Torque is equally important for climbing steep grades. Gravity is pulling a loaded vehicle backward with a constant force, and the engine needs sustained low-speed torque to fight that pull without overheating or losing momentum. Horsepower helps once you’re already moving at speed, but torque is the foundation that makes the initial work possible.
Electric Motors and Instant Torque
Electric vehicles have fundamentally changed what drivers expect from torque delivery. An electric motor produces its maximum torque from 0 RPM, instantly, with no lag. A combustion engine making 1,000 lb-ft of torque only hits that number at one specific RPM. An electric motor rated at 1,000 lb-ft delivers that full amount from a standstill all the way up to its rated operating speed.
This is why EVs feel so quick off the line, even models that aren’t marketed as performance vehicles. That neck-snapping launch happens because 100% of the motor’s torque is available the instant you press the accelerator. There’s no waiting for the engine to reach its power band, no turbo lag, no need to rev up before launching. If an electric drag car bogs at launch and RPMs drop, the full torque rating is still available. A combustion engine in the same situation loses torque as RPMs fall away from the peak.
Torque Measurement Units
Torque is measured in pound-feet (lb-ft) in the United States and Newton-meters (Nm) in most of the rest of the world. One lb-ft equals approximately 1.356 Nm. When comparing vehicles across markets, this conversion matters. A European car rated at 400 Nm produces about 295 lb-ft, which sounds less impressive in raw numbers but represents the same physical force.
You’ll sometimes see “foot-pounds” used interchangeably with “pound-feet.” Technically, foot-pounds measure energy (work), while pound-feet measure torque (rotational force). In casual conversation and even some manufacturer specs, they’re treated as the same thing, but lb-ft is the correct unit for torque.
