At 81 mg, aspirin works by permanently disabling an enzyme in your platelets, the small blood cells responsible for clotting. Because the effect is irreversible, each platelet affected by aspirin stays unable to clump for its entire lifespan, roughly 7 to 10 days. The most common reason doctors prescribe aspirin EC 81 mg is secondary prevention, which means protecting someone who already has cardiovascular disease from having another event. This includes people who have had a prior heart attack, a stroke caused by a blood clot, coronary artery bypass surgery, or a stent placed in a coronary artery. What the Enteric Coating Does
The enteric coating is designed to prevent the tablet from breaking down in your stomach’s acidic environment. Instead, it passes through to the upper small intestine, where it dissolves and gets absorbed. The goal is to reduce stomach irritation and ulcer risk.
In practice, the protection may be more modest than it sounds. Research from the American Heart Association has found little evidence that enteric-coated aspirin significantly reduces gastric injury compared to plain aspirin. The damage may simply shift further down the digestive tract. Additionally, enteric-coated formulations can have lower bioavailability, meaning slightly less aspirin actually reaches your bloodstream. A study of healthy older adults found that daily low-dose aspirin raised the risk of serious gastrointestinal bleeding by 60%. This is why the primary prevention guidelines are cautious, especially for older adults. The Ibuprofen Interaction

Ibuprofen blocks the site temporarily, but in doing so it can prevent aspirin from reaching it, which undermines aspirin’s permanent antiplatelet effect.
Timing matters. The FDA notes that ibuprofen taken within 30 minutes after immediate-release aspirin, or within 8 hours before aspirin, can blunt aspirin’s clot-preventing action. If you need occasional ibuprofen, taking it at least 30 minutes after your aspirin dose (or at least 8 hours before) appears to avoid the interaction.
