Fluid flow analysis is the study of how liquids and gases move through or around objects, using math, physics, and computer simulations to predict behavior like velocity, pressure, and energy loss. It’s the foundation of work ranging from aircraft wing design to modeling blood flow through narrowed arteries. Whether done with pen-and-paper equations or sophisticated software, the goal is the same: understand how a fluid behaves so you can design better systems or diagnose problems.
The Core Principles Behind It
Every fluid flow analysis rests on three conservation laws from physics: conservation of mass, conservation of momentum, and conservation of energy. These translate into specific equations that engineers solve to find three primary unknowns at every point in the fluid: velocity, pressure, and temperature.
The conservation of mass, often called the continuity equation, says that fluid can’t appear or disappear. What flows into a section of pipe must flow out. For incompressible fluids like water, this simplifies to a requirement that the velocity field be “divergence free,” meaning there’s no net expansion or compression at any point.
The conservation of momentum equation is better known as the Navier-Stokes equation. It’s essentially Newton’s second law (force equals mass times acceleration) applied to a fluid. It accounts for pressure pushing the fluid, gravity pulling it, and viscous friction resisting its motion. In the computational fluid dynamics (CFD) world, “Navier-Stokes” is often used as a catch-all term that includes both the momentum and continuity equations together. These equations are notoriously difficult to solve exactly, which is why computer simulation dominates modern practice.
For simpler situations, Bernoulli’s principle offers a shortcut. It states that in a steady, frictionless flow, the total energy (a combination of pressure, velocity, and height) stays constant along a streamline. In real pipes with viscous fluids, energy is lost to friction along the walls, so engineers add a “viscous head” term to Bernoulli’s equation to track that lost energy.
Laminar vs. Turbulent Flow
One of the first things any flow analysis determines is whether the flow is smooth and orderly (laminar) or chaotic and mixed (turbulent). The dividing line is captured by the Reynolds number, a dimensionless value that compares the fluid’s inertia to its viscosity. In pipe flow, Osborne Reynolds established that flows with a Reynolds number below approximately 2,300 remain laminar. Above that value, turbulence invariably develops. The exact transition point can shift slightly depending on disturbances in the system, but 2,300 is the standard threshold for pipes.
This distinction matters because laminar and turbulent flows behave very differently. In laminar flow, the friction factor (which determines how much energy the fluid loses to the pipe walls) can be calculated with a simple formula: 64 divided by the Reynolds number. In turbulent flow, friction depends on both the Reynolds number and the roughness of the pipe’s inner surface, the ratio of the average bump size on the wall to the pipe diameter. Engineers use the Colebrook equation or its graphical equivalent, the Moody chart, to find friction factors in turbulent conditions.
How a CFD Simulation Works
Most modern fluid flow analysis is done computationally. NASA’s Glenn Research Center outlines the standard process in roughly ten steps, which boil down to a repeating cycle of setup, simulation, and validation.
- Define the problem and geometry. You start by specifying what you’re studying: airflow over a car body, coolant through a heat exchanger, blood in an artery. The physical shape is modeled digitally.
- Generate the grid (mesh). The geometry is divided into thousands or millions of tiny cells. The governing equations are solved at each cell, so mesh quality directly affects accuracy.
- Set boundary and initial conditions. You tell the simulation what’s happening at the edges: the velocity of air entering, the pressure at an outlet, whether a wall is heated or insulated.
- Run and monitor the simulation. The software iterates through the equations until the solution stabilizes. Engineers monitor convergence to make sure the math is settling on a consistent answer.
- Post-process and validate. Results are visualized as color maps of pressure, velocity streamlines, or temperature distributions. These are compared against experimental data or analytical solutions to check accuracy.
Industry-standard software for this work includes Siemens Simcenter STAR-CCM+, which is widely used across aerospace, automotive, and energy applications. It handles everything from combustion inside jet engines to thermal runaway in battery cells. Other commonly used tools include ANSYS Fluent, OpenFOAM (open-source), and COMSOL Multiphysics.
Pressure Drop in Pipes
One of the most common practical applications of fluid flow analysis is calculating pressure drop in piping systems. When fluid moves through a pipe, friction between the fluid and the pipe wall converts kinetic energy into heat, reducing the pressure downstream. The amount of pressure lost depends on four main variables: pipe length, pipe diameter, flow velocity, and the friction factor.
The friction factor, in turn, depends on the Reynolds number and the pipe’s relative roughness. A smooth copper pipe will create less friction than a corroded cast-iron pipe of the same diameter. This is why engineers need to know not just the fluid properties and flow rate, but also the physical condition of the pipe itself. The Moody chart, which plots friction factor against Reynolds number for various roughness values, remains one of the most referenced tools in fluid engineering.
Blood Flow and Cardiovascular Applications
Fluid flow analysis has become increasingly important in medicine, particularly for understanding cardiovascular disease. Blood flowing through arteries creates mechanical stress on vessel walls, and abnormal stress patterns are linked to plaque buildup, aneurysm growth, and heart failure progression.
The key parameter clinicians look at is wall shear stress (WSS), the frictional force blood exerts on the artery lining. Beyond WSS, researchers measure vorticity and helicity (indicators of swirling flow patterns), energy loss (which reflects how hard the heart has to work to push blood through diseased vessels), and turbulent kinetic energy (which captures the severity of chaotic flow caused by narrowed or malformed structures).
Phase-contrast MRI can measure blood velocity in three dimensions across the cardiac cycle, providing real-world data for these calculations. Validation studies show that flow measurements from phase-contrast MRI agree with laboratory reference methods to within 5% for both steady and pulsating flows, with correlation coefficients above 0.96. Accuracy drops, however, downstream of severe narrowings, where turbulence disrupts the signal.
One complexity of modeling blood is that it doesn’t behave like water. Blood is a non-Newtonian fluid, meaning its viscosity changes with flow conditions. At high velocities and shear rates, blood flows smoothly and its viscosity is relatively constant, making a simple Newtonian model adequate. But in low-velocity regions, such as near vessel walls or in recirculation zones behind a narrowing, blood’s true viscosity is significantly higher than the Newtonian constant. Studies of intracranial artery stenosis have found that while the Newtonian simplification works well for estimating wall shear stress in normal arteries (Reynolds numbers below 2,000), it can underestimate stress in low-shear zones, particularly during the resting phase of the heartbeat when flow is slowest.
Airflow in the Lungs
The same principles apply to air moving through the respiratory system. Researchers use fluid-structure interaction models to simulate how the lungs’ tiny air sacs (alveoli) deform during breathing and how inhaled particles travel through them. A four-generation model of the lung’s deepest airways, driven by oscillating pressure to mimic real breathing, has shown that particles in the 0.1 to 5 micrometer range deposit differently depending on their size and the number of breathing cycles. Submicron particles, especially those around 1 micrometer, require multiple breathing cycles to fully deposit, which allows them to penetrate deeper into the lung.
This research serves two purposes. For inhalation therapy, it helps design drug particles that reach their intended target deep in the lungs. For health risk assessment, it reveals how toxic aerosols and airborne pathogens penetrate and deposit in respiratory tissue.
Microfluidics and Diagnostic Devices
At the smallest scales, fluid flow analysis drives the design of lab-on-a-chip devices. Microfluidics deals with fluid volumes as small as a billionth of a liter, moving through channels only tens to hundreds of micrometers wide. At these dimensions, flow is almost always laminar, and surface tension and viscous forces dominate over inertia.
The practical payoff is diagnostic devices that need only a tiny drop of blood or saliva, use minimal reagents, and deliver results faster than conventional lab equipment because the smaller length scales speed up chemical reactions and separations. These devices can be portable, automated, and simple enough for non-specialists to use, making them candidates for point-of-care testing in clinics or field settings. The technology traces back to miniaturized chromatography and electrophoresis tools developed in the mid-1990s, but has since expanded into molecular diagnostics, pathogen detection, and high-throughput screening.
