Forensic anthropology is a specialized application of physical anthropology, focusing on the analysis of human skeletal remains within a legal framework. This discipline combines knowledge of human anatomy, archaeology, and the decomposition process to assist law enforcement and medical examiners in identifying deceased individuals. Forensic anthropologists are often called upon when remains are badly decomposed, burned, or otherwise unrecognizable, making traditional identification methods impossible. The Essential Distinction: Human Versus Non-Human Remains

The initial step in any forensic anthropological investigation is to determine whether the recovered material is bone and, if so, whether it is human or non-human. This distinction is foundational because only human remains fall under the jurisdiction of a medical examiner or coroner. Anthropologists rely on differences in morphology, size, and microscopic structure to make this assessment, particularly when only fragmentary pieces are found.

Human bones are generally less dense and more porous compared to the bones of large mammals, which must support greater weight. A key difference lies in the microstructure of the bone tissue, where human bones exhibit scattered and evenly spaced Haversian systems, while many non-human mammals display a more organized, repeating pattern called plexiform bone. Gross skeletal anatomy also provides clues, as the human cranium is large and rounded to house a relatively large brain.

Sex Estimation

Sex estimation is most reliably performed by examining the pelvis, which exhibits distinct morphological differences related to female childbirth capacity, such as a wider subpubic angle and a broader sciatic notch. The skull also displays sexually dimorphic traits, including the size of the mastoid processes and the prominence of the brow ridge.

Age at Death Estimation

Estimating the age at death involves examining developmental changes in subadults, such as dental eruption and the fusion of the epiphyses (the ends of long bones). For adults, age estimation relies on degenerative changes, such as the wear on the pubic symphysis or the auricular surface of the pelvis.

Ancestry Estimation

Ancestry estimation uses metric measurements and non-metric traits of the skull, which reflect variations in human populations over time. The size and shape of the nasal opening, the projection of the midface, and the shape of the orbital openings are among the features analyzed to provide a generalized geographic origin.

Stature Estimation

Stature, or living height, is calculated using mathematical formulas that relate the length of long bones, such as the femur or tibia, to a person’s total height. These formulas are specific to the estimated sex and ancestry of the individual to ensure accuracy, providing a likely range of height rather than an exact number. The completed biological profile is then used by law enforcement to compare against databases of missing persons, such as the National Missing and Unidentified Persons System (NamUs).

Analyzing Skeletal Trauma and Context

The investigation next shifts from identifying who the person was to determining what happened to them by analyzing skeletal injuries. Forensic anthropologists examine bone for evidence of trauma, which is generally categorized by the mechanism of injury, such as blunt force, sharp force, or ballistic trauma. Blunt force trauma, often seen as fractures or breaks, can be caused by impacts from objects like bats or falls, while sharp force trauma leaves identifiable marks like incisions or punctures from knives.

Ballistic trauma analysis involves the study of entry and exit wounds created by projectiles, which can indicate the type of weapon used and the direction of fire. Determining the timing of the injury relative to the time of death is essential, classified as antemortem, perimortem, or postmortem.

Antemortem trauma shows signs of healing, such as callus formation or rounded fracture edges, indicating the injury occurred while the person was alive. Perimortem trauma occurred around the time of death, meaning the bone was still elastic, resulting in characteristic fracture patterns like clean, sharp edges and splintering without any signs of healing. Postmortem damage happens after the bone has dried out and lost its elasticity, typically resulting in jagged, brittle fractures that often appear lighter in color than the surrounding bone. Differentiating between perimortem and postmortem damage is essential to distinguish between injuries related to the death event and damage caused by environmental factors, animals, or recovery efforts.

Forensic Anthropology in the Judicial Process

The work of a forensic anthropologist extends beyond the laboratory to the legal system, where their scientific findings are presented to aid in judicial proceedings. After completing the analysis, the anthropologist compiles a comprehensive official report detailing the methods used, the resulting biological profile, and the interpretation of any skeletal trauma. This report serves as the primary document linking the scientific evidence to the legal investigation.

The anthropologist acts as a liaison, communicating complex osteological data to law enforcement, medical examiners, and prosecutors in an understandable manner.
