They can order labs, diagnose conditions, and prescribe treatments.

Functional health coaches play a different role. Board-certified health and wellness coaches don’t diagnose, treat, interpret lab results, or prescribe nutritional plans. Instead, they help you set and follow through on behavior changes. A coach creates structure and accountability while you lead the focus areas. Think of them as a guide for the lifestyle side of the equation: helping you actually implement the sleep, diet, stress, and movement changes that a practitioner recommends. The distinction matters because the term “functional health” is used broadly, and not everyone offering services under that umbrella has the same training or scope of practice. A board-certified functional medicine physician operates very differently from a wellness coach or an unlicensed practitioner using the same language.

Limitations Worth Knowing

Functional health visits and many of the specialized lab panels are often not covered by insurance, making the approach more expensive out of pocket than conventional care. Initial consultations can run well over an hour, and follow-up testing adds cost quickly. The personalized nature of the model also means results vary widely. What works for one person with a similar diagnosis may not work for you, which is the point philosophically but can be frustrating practically.

Some critics also note that the field’s evidence base, while growing, is still thinner than conventional medicine’s for many specific conditions.
