What Is Gender Swaying and Can It Actually Work?

Gender swaying is the practice of using natural, at-home methods before conception to try to influence whether you have a boy or a girl. These methods typically involve timing intercourse around ovulation, adjusting your diet, or changing the vaginal environment. None of them are medically guaranteed, but some small studies report success rates between 70% and 90%, compared to the roughly 50/50 odds nature gives you.

How Sex Is Determined Naturally

A baby’s sex comes down to which sperm fertilizes the egg. Sperm carrying a Y chromosome produce a boy; sperm carrying an X chromosome produce a girl. The natural ratio slightly favors boys, at about 106 males born for every 100 females, but for practical purposes the odds are close to even.

The entire premise of gender swaying rests on real biological differences between these two types of sperm. Y-bearing sperm are physically smaller, swim faster, and move more progressively. X-bearing sperm are larger (about 2.9% more DNA), have longer tails, and are generally hardier. Y sperm have a shorter lifespan and are more vulnerable to acidic environments and oxidative stress. X sperm can survive longer in the reproductive tract. Swaying methods try to exploit these differences to give one type an advantage over the other.

The Shettles Method: Timing and pH

The most widely known swaying approach is the Shettles Method, developed by physician Landrum Shettles in the 1960s. It focuses on two variables: when you have intercourse relative to ovulation, and the acidity of the vaginal environment.

To sway for a boy, the method recommends abstaining from sex from the start of the menstrual cycle until the day of ovulation itself. The idea is that faster-swimming Y sperm will reach the egg first when the race is short. Intercourse on ovulation day and the two to three days following gives Y sperm their best window.

To sway for a girl, couples are told to have intercourse freely after menstruation but stop two to three days before ovulation. By the time the egg is released, the shorter-lived Y sperm have already died off, leaving the hardier X sperm still viable.

Shettles also recommended altering vaginal pH with douching. A vinegar-and-water solution (two tablespoons of white vinegar per quart of water) creates an acidic environment thought to favor X sperm, since Y sperm are more fragile in acid. A baking soda solution at the same ratio creates an alkaline environment thought to favor Y sperm. These douches are used before every instance of intercourse to be effective.

The Whelan Method: A Different Calendar

Elizabeth Whelan proposed a competing timing method that actually contradicts Shettles on when to have intercourse. For a boy, Whelan recommended sex four to six days before ovulation. For a girl, two to three days before. She based this on her own research into how biochemical conditions in the reproductive tract change throughout the cycle.

Whelan claimed her method increased the probability of conceiving a boy by 86% and a girl by 66%. She recommended tracking ovulation by taking your temperature with an oral thermometer every morning before getting out of bed, a technique called basal body temperature charting. The fact that the two best-known timing methods directly contradict each other gives you a sense of how unsettled the science is.

Diet-Based Swaying

Some swaying protocols focus on what the mother eats in the weeks before conception. The theory is that maternal mineral intake can shift conditions inside the reproductive tract to favor one type of sperm over the other.

For conceiving a girl, the dietary approach calls for meals low in sodium and high in calcium. Think dairy products, leafy greens, and minimal salt. One prospective study combined this diet with intercourse timed well before ovulation and found that 81% of the women who followed both protocols had girls, a statistically significant result. For conceiving a boy, the recommendations typically flip: higher sodium, higher potassium (bananas, potatoes, red meat), and fewer dairy products.

These diets need to be followed consistently for several weeks before conception to have any proposed effect. That level of dietary restriction can be a concern. Cutting out entire food groups or drastically reducing sodium during a period when your body is preparing for pregnancy carries real nutritional trade-offs, and most of these protocols have not been evaluated for long-term safety.

What the Evidence Actually Shows

The reported success rates for gender swaying are all over the map, which is itself a red flag. Some studies using diet combined with ovulation timing report that 82% to 87% of participants achieved their desired sex. Broader reviews cite success rates between 70% and 90% across different populations. Those numbers sound impressive, but the studies tend to be small, and many rely on self-reported outcomes or lack proper control groups.

A core problem with evaluating swaying is confirmation bias. Couples who try these methods and get the desired result are more likely to report back. Those who don’t may drop out of studies or simply not follow up. Sample sizes are often in the dozens rather than the thousands, and few of these studies have been replicated by independent researchers. The biological differences between X and Y sperm are well documented, but whether the at-home methods people use can meaningfully exploit those differences remains genuinely uncertain.

How Medical Sex Selection Compares

If you want near-certainty, the only proven option is IVF with genetic testing of embryos. The process involves stimulating egg production with fertility medications for 10 to 14 days, retrieving eggs under sedation in a procedure lasting about 20 to 30 minutes, then fertilizing them in a lab. The resulting embryos grow in incubators for five to seven days before a specialist removes a small number of cells from each one for chromosomal analysis.

The lab identifies which embryos are XX (female) and which are XY (male), along with screening for chromosomal abnormalities. Results take one to two weeks, which means embryos are frozen rather than transferred fresh. On transfer day, the chosen embryo is thawed (with a survival rate above 95% using modern freezing techniques) and placed in the uterus. This approach is 99% accurate for sex selection.

A less expensive alternative is sperm sorting, where a lab attempts to separate X-bearing sperm from Y-bearing sperm before insemination. This method is only 70% to 75% accurate, putting it roughly in the same range that some natural swaying studies claim, but at a significant financial cost. IVF with genetic testing is the gold standard but involves a full fertility treatment cycle, which is physically demanding, time-consuming, and expensive.

Practical Considerations

Most people drawn to gender swaying are looking for something low-cost and noninvasive they can try at home. The methods are simple enough: track your cycle carefully, adjust when you have sex, and possibly change your diet. The risk of harm is low, as long as you’re not following extreme diets that leave you deficient in important nutrients during a time when your body needs them most.

The biggest practical risk is disappointment. Even the most optimistic studies leave a 10% to 30% chance of not getting the result you wanted, and realistic odds may be closer to a coin flip. If you try a swaying method, it helps to go in with the understanding that you’re nudging probabilities at best, not choosing an outcome.
