GI stasis is a potentially life-threatening condition in which a rabbit’s digestive system slows down or stops moving entirely. It’s one of the most common emergencies in pet rabbits, and it’s always a secondary problem, meaning something else (pain, stress, poor diet, or illness) triggered the slowdown. Recognizing it early and acting fast makes a significant difference in outcome.

How a Rabbit’s Gut Works, and What Goes Wrong

Rabbits have a uniquely sensitive digestive system that depends on near-constant movement. Food passes from the stomach through the small intestine and into a large fermentation chamber called the cecum, where beneficial bacteria break down fiber. This process only works when the gut keeps moving. When something disrupts that motion, the contents sitting in the cecum begin to ferment abnormally, shifting the pH and allowing harmful bacteria to overgrow. This bacterial imbalance (called dysbiosis) produces gas, causes pain, and makes the rabbit feel even worse, which further suppresses appetite and gut movement. It becomes a self-reinforcing cycle that can deteriorate quickly.

This is why GI stasis is never the whole story. There’s always an underlying trigger. The stasis itself then creates its own cascade of problems, but finding and addressing the original cause is essential to real recovery.

Common Causes

The most frequent trigger is an inappropriate diet, specifically one too low in fiber. Rabbits need large amounts of long-stemmed grass hay (like timothy or orchard grass) to keep their gut moving. Diets heavy in pellets, treats, or starchy vegetables don’t provide enough indigestible fiber to stimulate normal motility. Hay should make up roughly 80% of what a rabbit eats every day.

Pain from any source can shut down the gut. Dental disease is a major culprit because overgrown or misaligned teeth make eating painful, so the rabbit eats less, and the gut slows. Bladder stones, arthritis, and post-surgical pain can all have the same effect.

Stress is another common trigger. A new pet in the house, a loud environment, a sudden change in routine, or even a car ride to the vet can be enough to slow a sensitive rabbit’s digestion. Dehydration plays a role too: without enough water, the gut contents dry out and become harder to move through the system.

Signs to Watch For

The earliest and most reliable sign is a change in droppings. You might notice your rabbit producing fewer fecal pellets than usual, or the pellets may be smaller, darker, irregularly shaped, or strung together with hair. Some rabbits stop producing droppings entirely. If you clean your rabbit’s litter box on a regular schedule, you’ll notice this quickly.

Reduced appetite is the other hallmark sign. A rabbit that turns down its favorite greens or ignores fresh hay is telling you something is wrong. Other signs include:

  • Lethargy: sitting hunched in one spot, reluctance to move
  • Abdominal discomfort: pressing the belly to the floor, teeth grinding (a sign of pain in rabbits), or flinching when the belly is touched
  • A bloated or tight-feeling abdomen: gas buildup can make the belly feel firm or distended
  • Gurgling or absent gut sounds: a healthy rabbit’s belly makes soft, frequent sounds; silence or loud gurgling both warrant concern

When It Becomes an Emergency

GI stasis can become critical within 12 to 24 hours if untreated. One serious red flag is a drop in body temperature. A healthy rabbit’s rectal temperature falls between 100.4°F and 103.8°F (38.0°C to 39.9°C). A temperature at or below 100.2°F (37.9°C) qualifies as hypothermia, and research shows hypothermic rabbits are three times more likely to die than those with a normal temperature. If your rabbit’s ears feel cold to the touch (ears are a rough proxy for body temperature in rabbits), that’s cause for urgent concern.

Complete refusal of all food, no droppings for more than 10 to 12 hours, a visibly distended abdomen, or a rabbit that’s limp or unresponsive all signal that you need veterinary care immediately, not the next morning.

How It’s Diagnosed

A vet will typically diagnose GI stasis based on your rabbit’s history and a physical exam. They’ll feel the abdomen for gas, doughy gut contents, or masses, and listen for gut sounds with a stethoscope. Abdominal X-rays are often taken to check for gas patterns, to rule out a true blockage (which requires different treatment), and to look for other problems like bladder stones. Bloodwork may be run to check organ function and look for signs of infection or dehydration that point to the underlying cause.

Treatment and What to Expect

Treatment targets two things simultaneously: restarting gut movement and addressing whatever caused the slowdown in the first place. For the gut itself, the vet will typically focus on hydration, pain relief, and nutritional support.

Fluids are a cornerstone of treatment. Rehydrating the gut contents helps them move through the system again. Your vet may give fluids under the skin (subcutaneously) or, in more severe cases, intravenously. Pain management matters enormously because a rabbit in pain won’t eat, and eating is what ultimately restarts the gut. Medications that stimulate gut contractions (prokinetics) are commonly prescribed to help restart normal motility. These work by encouraging the muscles of the digestive tract to contract in coordinated waves.

Syringe feeding is often part of the recovery plan, especially if the rabbit isn’t eating on its own. Herbivore recovery formulas (mixed into a smooth slurry) are given by syringe 4 to 5 times per day to keep calories and fiber entering the system. Your vet will show you the technique, which involves gently inserting a small syringe into the side of the mouth and giving small amounts at a time so the rabbit can swallow safely.

Gentle abdominal massage can also help move gas and gut contents along. Some vets will demonstrate how to do this at home. The key is to be gentle: firm pressure on a distended belly can cause pain or, in rare cases, rupture.

Recovery Signs and Timeline

Mild cases caught early can turn around within 24 to 48 hours with aggressive supportive care. More severe episodes, or those with a complicated underlying cause, may take several days to a week or more. The most encouraging signs of recovery come in a predictable order: the rabbit begins accepting food (even small amounts), gut sounds return, and droppings start reappearing. The first droppings are often small, dark, and irregular, gradually returning to their normal round shape and size.

A rabbit that’s eating hay voluntarily, producing normal droppings, and moving around comfortably is well on the road to recovery. Don’t be alarmed if appetite fluctuates for a few days, but a second decline after initial improvement warrants a follow-up vet visit, as it may indicate the underlying cause hasn’t been fully resolved.

Preventing GI Stasis

Diet is the single most important preventive measure. Unlimited grass hay should be available at all times. It provides the long-strand fiber that physically pushes food through the digestive tract. Pellets should be a small, measured portion (roughly a tablespoon or two per day for an average-sized rabbit, depending on your vet’s guidance), not a free-choice buffet. Fresh leafy greens add moisture and variety but shouldn’t replace hay.

Hydration matters more than many owners realize. Always provide fresh, clean water. Some rabbits drink more from a bowl than a bottle, so it’s worth offering both to see which your rabbit prefers. Adding a water bowl often increases intake noticeably.

Regular exercise keeps the gut moving. Rabbits that spend most of their time in a small cage are at higher risk than those with space to run and explore for several hours a day. Minimizing stress, keeping the environment consistent, and scheduling regular vet checkups (especially dental exams) all reduce the chance of a stasis episode. Rabbits are prey animals that hide illness instinctively, so by the time you notice something’s off, the problem may have been building for a while. Knowing your rabbit’s normal habits, especially their eating patterns and litter box output, is your best early warning system.
