Epsom Salt Baths

Soaking in an Epsom salt bath is one of the most popular home remedies for body aches, and there’s a reason it feels so good, even if the science is complicated. Epsom salt is magnesium sulfate, and the traditional explanation is that magnesium absorbs through your skin to relax muscles. No definitive studies have confirmed that magnesium actually absorbs through skin in meaningful amounts, and the research that does exist is skeptical of this claim.

That said, many healthcare providers still recommend Epsom salt baths for muscle soreness in the shoulders, neck, back, and skull. The warm water itself relaxes muscles and increases circulation, and there’s likely a real benefit from simply soaking in a warm bath for 15 to 20 minutes. Users typically dissolve one to two cups in a standard bathtub. Even if the magnesium absorption question remains open, the combination of warmth and relaxation consistently helps people feel better.

Supplements That Can Help

Magnesium

Magnesium plays a direct role in muscle contraction and relaxation, and many people don’t get enough of it.
