The green color is caused by a bacterial infection, most commonly Pseudomonas aeruginosa, a type of bacteria found widely in soil and water. This discoloration is often mistaken for mold or a fungal infection, which require different treatments. The bacteria itself is not green; the characteristic yellow-green or blue-green shade is produced by pigments it secretes as metabolic waste products.

These pigments, primarily pyocyanin and pyoverdin, stain the nail plate a noticeable color ranging from light green to a darker, almost blackish-green.
