Hb on a blood test stands for hemoglobin, the protein inside your red blood cells that carries oxygen from your lungs to every tissue in your body. It’s one of the most commonly measured values in routine bloodwork, typically reported as part of a complete blood count (CBC). Your hemoglobin level tells your doctor whether your blood is carrying enough oxygen to keep your body functioning well.
What Hemoglobin Actually Does
Think of each red blood cell as a delivery vehicle. Hemoglobin is what picks up oxygen in the lungs and transports it to muscles, organs, and tissues throughout your body. It also helps carry carbon dioxide (the waste product) back to the lungs so you can exhale it. Every single red blood cell contains hemoglobin, and the total amount in your blood determines how efficiently oxygen gets delivered.
When hemoglobin is too low, your tissues don’t get enough oxygen. When it’s too high, your blood can become thicker than normal, which creates its own set of problems. That’s why this one number gives doctors a quick snapshot of your overall health.
Normal Hemoglobin Ranges
Hemoglobin is measured in grams per deciliter (g/dL), which you’ll see on your lab report. The healthy ranges differ by sex:
- Men: 13.2 to 16.6 g/dL
- Women: 11.6 to 15.0 g/dL
- Children: 9.5 to 24.5 g/dL, depending on age
Pregnancy typically lowers hemoglobin because your blood volume increases significantly, diluting the concentration of red blood cells. This is normal to a point, though your provider will monitor it throughout pregnancy to make sure levels don’t drop too far.
Your lab report may flag a result as “high” or “low” based on general reference ranges, but your doctor interprets it in the context of your age, sex, health history, and other CBC values.
How Hemoglobin Fits Into Your CBC Results
A complete blood count measures several red blood cell values that are all related. Along with hemoglobin, you’ll see your red blood cell count (the total number of red cells) and hematocrit (the percentage of your blood that’s made up of red blood cells). These three numbers measure different features of the same thing, so they typically rise and fall together. If all three are low, that points toward anemia. If all three are high, that suggests a condition called erythrocytosis.
You may also notice a value called MCH on your report, which stands for mean corpuscular hemoglobin. This is different from the total Hb measurement. MCH tells you the average amount of hemoglobin inside each individual red blood cell, measured in picograms. It helps your doctor figure out what type of anemia you might have if your overall hemoglobin is low.
What Low Hemoglobin Means
Low hemoglobin is the hallmark of anemia, which simply means your blood isn’t carrying enough oxygen. It can be caused by iron deficiency (the most common reason), blood loss, chronic diseases, vitamin deficiencies, or problems with how your body produces red blood cells.
Mild anemia often causes no symptoms at all. Many people first discover they have low hemoglobin when they try to donate blood and get turned away. As levels drop further, symptoms tend to appear and gradually worsen. The most common signs include:
- Fatigue and weakness
- Shortness of breath during normal activity
- Pale or yellowish skin
- Dizziness or lightheadedness
- Cold hands and feet
- Headaches
- Irregular or fast heartbeat
Skin color changes can be harder to spot on darker skin tones. Checking the inside of your lower eyelids, your nail beds, or your gums for paleness can be more reliable.
What High Hemoglobin Means
An elevated hemoglobin level means your blood contains more oxygen-carrying protein than usual. Sometimes this is a real increase in red blood cells. Other times it’s a relative increase caused by dehydration, where you have the same number of red blood cells but less liquid in your blood, making the concentration appear higher.
Several factors can genuinely raise hemoglobin levels. Living at high altitude causes your body to produce more red blood cells to compensate for lower oxygen in the air. Smoking has a similar effect because carbon monoxide from cigarettes reduces the oxygen your blood can carry, prompting your body to make extra red blood cells. In some cases, high hemoglobin points to more serious conditions like heart disease or blood cancers that cause the body to overproduce red blood cells.
How the Test Works
A hemoglobin test requires a standard blood draw from a vein in your arm. It’s almost always ordered as part of a CBC rather than on its own, so you’ll get several other blood values back at the same time. No fasting or special preparation is typically needed for a CBC, though your doctor may ask you to fast if other tests are being run from the same blood sample.
Results usually come back within a day or two. If your hemoglobin is outside the normal range, your doctor may order follow-up tests to pinpoint the cause, such as iron studies, vitamin B12 levels, or a closer look at the size and shape of your red blood cells.
