What Is in BlueChew? Active Ingredients Explained

BlueChew tablets contain one of three active ingredients: sildenafil, tadalafil, or vardenafil. These are the same active compounds found in Viagra, Cialis, and Levitra, respectively. The difference is that BlueChew sells them as chewable, compounded tablets rather than the traditional pills you’d pick up at a pharmacy. They’re prescription medications for erectile dysfunction, delivered through a telehealth model.

The Three Active Ingredients

Each BlueChew subscription is built around one of three well-established ED drugs. All three belong to the same drug class and work the same way at a basic level, but they differ in how long they last and how quickly they kick in.

Sildenafil is the generic version of Viagra. It has a half-life of about 4 hours, meaning the effects wear off relatively quickly. This makes it a “take it when you need it” option, typically used 30 to 60 minutes before sexual activity.

Tadalafil is the generic version of Cialis. It has a half-life of 17.5 hours, which is dramatically longer than the other two. That extended window means you don’t have to time sexual activity as precisely around when you took the pill. Some people take a low daily dose so it’s always active in their system.

Vardenafil is the generic version of Levitra. Its half-life falls between 4 and 6 hours, putting it in a similar range to sildenafil but slightly longer-lasting for some users.

How These Ingredients Work

All three compounds are PDE5 inhibitors. Here’s what that means in plain terms: when you’re sexually aroused, your body releases nitric oxide, which triggers a chemical chain reaction that relaxes blood vessels in the penis and increases blood flow. A specific enzyme (PDE5) normally breaks down that chain reaction, ending the process. Sildenafil, tadalafil, and vardenafil block that enzyme, letting blood flow more freely and making it easier to get and maintain an erection.

These drugs don’t create arousal on their own. They amplify the body’s existing response to sexual stimulation. Without arousal, they won’t produce an erection.

Compounded, Not FDA-Approved

BlueChew’s tablets are compounded medications. That’s an important distinction. Compounded drugs are mixed by specialty pharmacies to create a specific formulation, in this case a chewable tablet, rather than being mass-manufactured and individually approved by the FDA. The active ingredients themselves (sildenafil, tadalafil, vardenafil) are the same ones in FDA-approved medications, but the final chewable product has not gone through the FDA approval process.

A September 2025 FDA warning letter to BlueChew’s parent company, Dermacare LLC, flagged the company’s website for offering compounded drug products and confirmed that compounded drug products are not FDA-approved. This doesn’t mean the ingredients are fake or untested. It means the specific chewable formulation hasn’t been evaluated by the FDA the way brand-name Viagra or Cialis has.

How You Get a Prescription

Despite the direct-to-consumer marketing, BlueChew still requires a prescription. The process starts with an online health questionnaire covering your medical history. You’ll need to upload a photo ID for identity verification. A medical provider licensed in your state reviews your information, follows up with questions, and may schedule a video or messaging consultation. If appropriate, they prescribe whichever option fits your situation.

The prescribing provider isn’t necessarily a doctor. It could be a nurse practitioner or physician assistant, depending on the state. Harvard Health Publishing notes that legitimate online ED retailers will always require a provider’s prescription and operate through state-licensed pharmacies.

Drug Interactions and Safety Risks

Because all three ingredients affect blood flow, the most dangerous interaction is with nitrate medications, commonly prescribed for chest pain or heart conditions (nitroglycerin, isosorbide mononitrate, and similar drugs). Combining PDE5 inhibitors with nitrates can cause a severe, potentially life-threatening drop in blood pressure. This combination is an absolute contraindication for all three drugs.

If you take sildenafil or vardenafil, nitrates should not be used for at least 24 hours afterward. For tadalafil, that window extends to at least 48 hours because of its much longer half-life.

Alpha-blockers, often prescribed for high blood pressure or prostate issues, also interact with these ingredients. Both drug types lower blood pressure, and combining them increases the risk of dizziness or fainting, especially when standing up. If you’re already stable on an alpha-blocker, a PDE5 inhibitor can sometimes be started at a lower dose, but this needs to be managed carefully.

Certain other medications slow the breakdown of these drugs in your body, effectively increasing the dose. HIV protease inhibitors, some antifungal medications, and certain antibiotics all fall into this category. Even grapefruit juice can increase how much of the drug stays in your system. Alcohol is another factor: the tadalafil label specifically cautions against drinking more than about five standard drinks, as the combination can cause drops in blood pressure upon standing.

Vardenafil carries an additional precaution for people taking medications that affect heart rhythm, as it can influence the heart’s electrical activity.

Common Side Effects

The side effects for all three ingredients are similar because they share the same mechanism. The most frequently reported ones include headache, facial flushing, nasal congestion, and indigestion. These happen because the drugs relax blood vessels throughout the body, not just in the penis.

Some people experience temporary changes in vision, particularly a blue tint, which is more commonly associated with sildenafil. Back pain and muscle aches are more common with tadalafil, likely because of its longer duration in the body. Most side effects are mild and resolve within a few hours as the drug clears your system.

A rare but serious side effect is priapism, an erection lasting more than four hours. This requires immediate medical attention because prolonged restricted blood flow can cause permanent damage.

What’s Different About the Chewable Form

The active ingredients in BlueChew are identical to what’s in traditional ED pills. The chewable format is the main practical difference. Chewable tablets dissolve in the mouth and may be absorbed slightly faster than a standard pill that needs to break down in the stomach, though BlueChew’s specific formulation hasn’t been studied in clinical trials the way the brand-name versions have. For people who have difficulty swallowing pills, the chewable form is a convenience advantage. The inactive ingredients (flavoring, sweeteners, binders that create the chewable texture) vary from the brand-name versions but are standard compounding components.
