Instrument error is the difference between what a measuring device reads and the true value of whatever is being measured. Every instrument, from a kitchen scale to a hospital blood pressure monitor, introduces some degree of error into its readings. These errors fall into two broad categories: systematic errors that skew readings consistently in one direction, and random errors that scatter readings unpredictably around the true value.
Systematic vs. Random Error
Systematic errors push every measurement in the same direction, either always too high or always too low. They come from flaws in the instrument itself, incorrect calibration, or improper technique. What makes them tricky is that repeating the measurement won’t reveal them. You can take a hundred readings with a miscalibrated thermometer and every single one will be off by the same amount. Even experienced researchers find systematic errors difficult to detect.
Random errors, by contrast, cause readings to scatter unpredictably above and below the true value. They arise from unpredictable changes in the instrument or its environment: electrical noise in a circuit, fluctuations in air currents, tiny vibrations in a lab bench. Because random errors distribute evenly in both directions (following a bell curve pattern), you can reduce their impact by taking multiple measurements and averaging. The more readings you take, the closer your average gets to the real value.
The distinction maps directly onto two terms you’ll see constantly in measurement science. Precision describes how tightly your repeated measurements cluster together, and it’s limited by random error. Accuracy describes how close your measurements land to the true value, and it’s reduced by systematic error. An instrument can be highly precise (tight clustering) yet inaccurate (the cluster is centered in the wrong place), or accurate on average but imprecise (scattered widely but centered correctly).
Common Types of Instrument Error
Two classic systematic errors affect instruments with a linear response. The first is zero error (also called offset error), where the instrument doesn’t read zero when the quantity being measured is zero. Think of a bathroom scale that shows 2 pounds with nothing on it. Every weight you measure will be 2 pounds too high. The second is scale factor error (also called multiplier error), where the instrument consistently reads changes as larger or smaller than they actually are. If a ruler’s markings are printed 1% too close together, every measurement will read 1% too high, and the error grows proportionally with the size of what you’re measuring.
Hysteresis is a subtler form of error where the instrument gives different readings depending on whether the measured value was increasing or decreasing before you took the reading. This happens because physical components inside the instrument, such as springs, magnetic materials, or mechanical joints, don’t return perfectly to their original state after being stressed. In precision instruments like force balances, even tiny changes in the magnetic state of nearby materials can shift readings depending on what the instrument was doing moments earlier.
Parallax error is a human-instrument hybrid. It occurs when you read a scale from an angle rather than straight on. If your eye is above or below the level of a mercury thermometer or a graduated cylinder, the apparent position of the reading shifts. The fix is simple: always position your line of sight perpendicular to the scale.
What Causes Instruments to Drift
Drift is a slow, creeping change in an instrument’s readings over time, and it plagues nearly every type of precision measurement. Temperature is the single biggest driver. As the environment warms or cools, materials inside the instrument expand or contract, electronic components change their behavior, and calibration shifts. Humidity is another common culprit, particularly for instruments that rely on electrical resistance or optical clarity.
This is why many electronic instruments need a warm-up period before they give stable readings. When you first turn on a device, its internal components are adjusting to operating temperature, and readings taken during this window are less reliable. Letting the instrument reach thermal equilibrium before measuring is one of the simplest ways to suppress drift errors.
How to Calculate Instrument Error
The basic formula is straightforward:
Error = experimental value − accepted value
This gives you the raw difference, including its direction (positive means your reading was too high, negative means too low). To express error as a percentage, which makes it easier to compare across different measurements and scales:
Percent error = |experimental value − accepted value| ÷ accepted value × 100%
The absolute value bars mean you drop the sign, since percent error describes magnitude regardless of direction. If a scale reads 102 grams for a 100-gram reference weight, the percent error is 2%. That same 2-gram error on a 10-gram measurement would be a 20% error, which is why percent error matters more than raw numbers when judging instrument quality.
Real-World Consequences of Instrument Error
Instrument error is not just an academic concern. In medicine, uncalibrated blood pressure monitors directly affect diagnosis. A computer simulation study found that sphygmomanometer (blood pressure cuff) errors cause 20% of all undetected systolic hypertension and 28% of undetected diastolic hypertension in adults. The problem runs both ways: the same calibration errors also cause 15% of false systolic hypertension diagnoses and 31% of false diastolic diagnoses. In some groups the impact is worse. Among women aged 35 to 44, instrument error accounts for 27% of all missed systolic hypertension cases.
Home blood glucose monitors face similarly strict requirements. Under the international accuracy standard ISO 15197:2013, at least 95% of a meter’s readings must fall within ±15 mg/dL of a laboratory reference when blood sugar is below 100 mg/dL, or within ±15% when blood sugar is 100 mg/dL or above. To reliably pass this standard, a meter’s average deviation from laboratory values needs to stay below roughly 5%.
How to Minimize Instrument Error
Calibration is the first line of defense. Regularly checking an instrument against a known reference standard reveals systematic errors before they contaminate your data. For critical applications, laboratories follow ISO/IEC 17025, the international standard governing testing and calibration competence. Compliance with this standard means a lab’s results are accepted across countries without retesting.
Beyond calibration, practical steps reduce error at the point of measurement:
- Check for zero error before each use. If the instrument doesn’t read zero at baseline, adjust it or subtract the offset from your readings.
- Allow warm-up time for electronic instruments so internal components reach stable operating temperature.
- Control the environment where possible. Temperature and humidity fluctuations are the dominant sources of drift in precision instruments.
- Read scales at eye level to eliminate parallax error.
- Take multiple measurements and average them. This won’t fix systematic errors, but it reduces the impact of random error significantly.
- Approach from one direction when measuring with instruments prone to hysteresis. Always increasing (or always decreasing) toward the measurement point keeps hysteresis effects consistent.
The goal is never to eliminate all error, because that’s impossible. Every measurement carries uncertainty. The goal is to understand how large that uncertainty is, control it where you can, and report it honestly so that anyone using your data knows how much to trust it.
