What Is Keyless Ignition? How It Works and Risks

Keyless ignition is a system that lets you start your car with the push of a button instead of turning a physical key. A small electronic fob in your pocket or bag communicates wirelessly with your vehicle, and when the car confirms the fob is present, pressing the start button fires up the engine. Over 90% of new vehicles sold in the United States included this feature by 2019, making it the default for most modern cars.

How the System Works

The process relies on a conversation between two radios: one inside the key fob and several antennas hidden throughout the vehicle. When you grab the door handle or press the start button, the car sends out a short-range signal through low-frequency antennas. Depending on the model, a vehicle may have five to eight of these antennas placed in the doors, trunk, dashboard, and center console. Their job is to detect exactly where the fob is, whether it’s inside the cabin, in the trunk, or still outside the car.

When the fob picks up that signal, it responds with a unique encrypted code on a different radio frequency. The car’s computer checks this code against its stored credentials. If everything matches, the system unlocks the doors or authorizes the engine to start. The entire exchange happens in a fraction of a second, so from your perspective you simply walk up, open the door, and push a button.

Because the car needs to verify the fob is physically inside the cabin before allowing the engine to start, the system is more than a convenience feature. It also serves as an anti-theft layer. A thief who doesn’t have your specific fob can’t start the car by hotwiring the ignition, since the push button won’t do anything without the encrypted handshake.

What Happens When Your Fob Battery Dies

Every keyless ignition vehicle has a backup method built in for this situation. The most common fix is simple: hold the dead fob directly against the start button. At that close range, the car’s antenna can still pick up enough of a passive signal from the fob’s chip to verify it and allow the engine to start. Some vehicles have a dedicated slot on the dashboard, center console, or steering column designed for exactly this purpose.

If that doesn’t work, many fobs conceal a small physical key inside the housing, usually released by sliding a latch on the fob’s back. This emergency key fits a hidden slot on the steering column that functions like a traditional ignition. As a last resort, some manufacturers offer remote start through a smartphone app or a call to their connected-services department, which can start the vehicle over its cellular data connection.

Safety Concerns Worth Knowing

Keyless ignition introduced two risks that didn’t exist with traditional keys, and both stem from the same design trait: it’s easy to forget the engine is running.

The first is carbon monoxide poisoning. With a traditional key, you physically remove it from the ignition when you leave, which shuts the engine off. With a push-button system, you can pocket the fob, walk into your house, and leave the engine idling in an attached garage. Carbon monoxide then seeps into the living space. Investigations have linked at least 37 deaths to this scenario across various vehicle brands, with an additional 18 non-fatal poisoning injuries documented. Toyota and Lexus models accounted for roughly half of those fatalities, though the problem is not limited to any single manufacturer.

The second risk is vehicle rollaway. If you press the start button to shut off the engine but forget to shift into park first, some vehicles will allow you to exit while the transmission is still in gear. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has flagged this as a specific concern. Modern vehicles vary widely in how they handle it. Some sound an alarm, some automatically shift into park, and some do very little. There’s no universal standard requiring a particular response.

How Cars Try to Prevent These Problems

Most newer vehicles include some combination of audible warnings if you open the driver’s door while the engine is still running or if the fob leaves the vehicle with the engine on. Some will automatically shut the engine off after a set period of idling. The specific alerts and automatic shutoffs differ significantly from one automaker to another, and even between model years of the same vehicle.

If you drive a keyless ignition car, the simplest habit to build is pressing the start button deliberately every time you exit, then listening for the engine to go silent before closing the door. This is especially important if you park in a garage attached to your home.

From Luxury Feature to Industry Standard

Mercedes-Benz introduced the first mass-produced proximity key system in the 1998 S-Class, allowing drivers to unlock and start the car without inserting a key. For the next decade, push-button start remained a premium option found mostly in luxury vehicles. By 2014, about 70% of new cars in the U.S. offered keyless ignition at least as optional equipment. Five years later that figure exceeded 90%, and today it’s difficult to find a new car without it. Many automakers have dropped the traditional keyed ignition entirely from their lineups, making the push-button system the only option available.
