Klor-Con M10 is a prescription extended-release tablet containing 10 milliequivalents (mEq) of potassium chloride. It’s used to treat and prevent low potassium levels (hypokalemia), typically in people whose potassium can’t be managed through diet alone or by adjusting other medications. The “M” in the name refers to its microencapsulated design, and “10” indicates the strength.
Why Potassium Supplements Are Prescribed
Your body depends on potassium for normal heart rhythm, muscle function, and nerve signaling. When potassium drops too low, you can experience muscle weakness, cramps, fatigue, irregular heartbeat, and in severe cases, dangerous cardiac events. The most common reason potassium falls is the use of certain diuretics (water pills) prescribed for high blood pressure or heart failure. These medications flush potassium out through urine faster than your body can replace it.
Klor-Con M10 is specifically indicated when eating more potassium-rich foods like bananas, potatoes, and leafy greens isn’t enough to keep levels in a healthy range. It acts as an electrolyte replenisher, delivering a controlled dose of potassium chloride to restore balance.
How the Microencapsulated Design Works
Unlike older wax-matrix or enteric-coated potassium tablets, Klor-Con M10 uses individually microencapsulated potassium chloride crystals. When the tablet reaches your stomach, it begins breaking apart within seconds and fully disintegrates within about one minute. But the tiny coated crystals themselves release potassium gradually rather than all at once.
This matters because a sudden burst of concentrated potassium in one spot of the digestive tract can irritate or even ulcerate the lining. The slow-release design spreads the potassium out over time, reducing the chance of localized damage. Older enteric-coated potassium products were linked to small bowel lesions at a rate of 40 to 50 per 100,000 patient-years, while extended-release formulations brought that rate down to less than one per 100,000 patient-years.
How to Take It
The tablets should be swallowed whole with a full glass of water. Do not crush, chew, or suck on them, as this defeats the extended-release mechanism and can dump too much potassium at once. Taking each dose with a meal helps reduce stomach irritation.
If you have trouble swallowing the tablet whole, there are two alternatives. You can break the tablet in half and take each half separately with water. Or you can dissolve the whole tablet in about half a glass (4 ounces) of water. Let it sit for roughly two minutes until the tablet disintegrates, stir for about 30 seconds, then drink the entire mixture right away using a glass or straw. Rinse the glass with another ounce of water, drink that, then repeat once more to make sure you get the full dose. Don’t prepare the suspension ahead of time or use liquids other than water.
Common Side Effects
The most frequent side effects are digestive: nausea, vomiting, gas, abdominal discomfort, and diarrhea. These occur because potassium chloride is inherently irritating to the GI tract. Taking your dose with food and avoiding large single doses are the most effective ways to minimize these symptoms. Skin rash has been reported rarely.
The most serious potential side effect is hyperkalemia, meaning potassium levels climb too high. Symptoms of excess potassium include tingling in the hands or feet, muscle weakness, a slow or irregular heartbeat, and in extreme cases, cardiac arrest. Periodic blood tests to check potassium levels are a standard part of treatment.
If you develop severe vomiting, sharp abdominal pain, bloating, or signs of GI bleeding (like dark or bloody stools), these could signal ulceration or obstruction in the digestive tract, and the medication should be stopped immediately.
Who Should Not Take Klor-Con M10
This medication is not appropriate for anyone who already has elevated potassium levels. It’s also contraindicated in people with conditions that slow or block the passage of tablets through the digestive tract. This includes structural blockages, diabetic gastroparesis (where the stomach empties abnormally slowly), and use of medications with strong anticholinergic effects that reduce gut motility. When a tablet sits in one place too long, the concentrated potassium can damage the surrounding tissue.
People with an enlarged left atrium that compresses the esophagus are at particular risk for esophageal ulceration from solid potassium tablets. In these cases, a liquid potassium supplement is a safer alternative.
Drug Interactions to Be Aware Of
Several common medications raise potassium levels on their own, and combining them with a potassium supplement can push levels into a dangerous range. The most important interactions involve:
- Potassium-sparing diuretics such as spironolactone, triamterene, and amiloride. These should not be taken alongside potassium supplements because the combination can cause severe hyperkalemia.
- Blood pressure medications that affect the renin-angiotensin system, including ACE inhibitors, ARBs, and direct renin inhibitors. These drugs reduce the body’s ability to excrete potassium by suppressing a hormone called aldosterone. If you take one of these, your potassium levels need close monitoring.
- NSAIDs (common over-the-counter pain relievers like ibuprofen and naproxen) can also contribute to potassium retention.
Blood Testing During Treatment
Because the line between too little and too much potassium is relatively narrow, regular blood work is essential while taking Klor-Con M10. Your prescriber will check your serum potassium levels at the start of treatment and periodically afterward, with more frequent testing if you’re also taking any of the interacting medications listed above. Kidney function is typically monitored alongside potassium, since the kidneys are responsible for clearing excess potassium from the body. If kidney function declines, potassium can accumulate even at previously safe doses.
