LiDAR, short for Light Detection and Ranging, is a remote sensing technology that uses rapid pulses of laser light to measure distances and build detailed 3D maps of the surrounding environment. It works on a simple principle: a laser fires a pulse of light, that light bounces off a surface, and a sensor records how long the round trip took. Because light travels at a known, constant speed, that travel time translates directly into a precise distance measurement. Repeat this millions of times per second across a landscape, and you get a dense three-dimensional picture of everything the laser touched.
How LiDAR Works
Think of LiDAR as sonar, but with light instead of sound. A laser source rapidly strobes pulses toward the ground or surrounding objects. When those pulses hit something, whether a tree branch, a building wall, or bare ground, some of the light energy reflects back to a detector on the LiDAR unit. The system’s timing electronics measure the two-way travel time down to nanoseconds, then convert that into a distance.
A complete LiDAR system needs more than just a laser and a detector. It also relies on a GPS receiver to pinpoint the sensor’s exact position in three-dimensional space, and an Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU) that tracks the sensor’s orientation, accounting for tilt, rotation, and motion. When mounted on an aircraft, for example, the IMU corrects for the plane’s roll, pitch, and yaw so every measurement lands in the right spot on a map. A scanning mechanism, often a rotating mirror, sweeps the laser beam across a wide area rather than firing in a single fixed direction. All of these components feed data into an onboard computer that stitches the measurements together into what’s called a point cloud: a massive collection of individual distance measurements, each tagged with a precise geographic coordinate.
What a Point Cloud Looks Like
Raw LiDAR data is a cloud of millions, sometimes billions, of individual points in 3D space. Each point represents one place where a laser pulse bounced back. Viewed on a screen, a dense point cloud looks like a ghostly but highly detailed sculpture of the landscape, showing the shape of terrain, the outlines of buildings, and even individual tree canopies.
Before anyone can use this data, it goes through several processing steps. Points are classified into categories like ground, vegetation, buildings, and water. Accuracy is verified against known reference points. The data is tied to standard geographic coordinate systems so it lines up with existing maps. The U.S. Geological Survey maintains detailed specifications for how LiDAR data should be processed to ensure consistency across projects. Once cleaned and classified, the point cloud can generate elevation models, contour maps, 3D city models, and much more.
Two Wavelengths, Two Tradeoffs
Most LiDAR systems use laser light in the near-infrared range, invisible to the human eye. The two most common wavelengths are 905 nanometers and 1,550 nanometers, and each comes with a distinct set of tradeoffs.
The 905 nm wavelength became popular early on because the laser components were cheap and compact. The downside is that light at this wavelength passes through the eye and reaches the retina, so eye-safety rules limit how much power the laser can emit. That power ceiling effectively caps the detection range of many 905 nm automotive systems to around 100 meters. Manufacturers work around this by scanning the beam continuously so it sweeps across any given point, including a person’s eye, in about a millisecond.
At 1,550 nm, the eye’s cornea and lens absorb the light before it ever reaches the retina, so the damage threshold is much higher. This lets 1,550 nm systems safely fire more powerful pulses and detect objects at longer distances. That longer range is attractive for highway-speed self-driving cars. However, 1,550 nm lasers are more expensive to build (most use fiber amplification rather than simple diode lasers), and the longer wavelength scatters more in atmospheric moisture, which can reduce performance in rain or humidity.
Mechanical vs. Solid-State Sensors
Early LiDAR sensors used a physically spinning mirror to sweep the laser beam in a full 360-degree circle. You may have seen the spinning cylinders mounted on the roofs of self-driving test cars. These mechanical systems produce excellent coverage and are well-proven, but they’re bulky, expensive, and have moving parts that can wear out.
Solid-state LiDAR replaces that spinning mirror with components that have no large moving parts. One approach uses a tiny MEMS (microelectromechanical) mirror that tilts rapidly to steer the beam. MEMS-based systems are smaller and cheaper to manufacture, though the mirrors can be more fragile. A newer approach called an optical phased array steers the beam electronically by changing the electrical signal fed to an array of emitters, with no mechanical movement at all. These are the cheapest and most robust option and can be manufactured using well-established silicon fabrication techniques, though the design technology is still catching up. Both solid-state approaches trade the full 360-degree view of a spinning unit for a narrower field of view, but their compact size means multiple units can be placed around a vehicle to cover all directions.
Self-Driving Cars and Robotics
LiDAR has become a core sensor for autonomous vehicles because it provides something cameras and radar struggle with on their own: high angular resolution and precise 3D spatial data in real time. A camera can identify what an object is (a pedestrian, a stop sign), but it has limited ability to judge exact distance. Radar excels at measuring distance and speed and works well in rain or darkness, but its angular resolution is coarse, making it hard to distinguish between two objects that are close together. LiDAR fills the gap by mapping the exact shape and distance of everything around the car with centimeter-level accuracy.
Most autonomous vehicle developers fuse data from all three sensors. Radar handles long-range detection and performs reliably in poor weather. Cameras provide color and texture for object recognition. LiDAR delivers the precise 3D geometry that ties it all together. The global LiDAR market reached roughly $2.97 billion in 2026 and is projected to grow to nearly $7 billion by 2032, driven in large part by autonomous vehicle development alongside infrastructure monitoring, environmental science, and defense applications.
Weather Limitations
Because LiDAR relies on light, anything that scatters or blocks light degrades its performance. Rain, snow, fog, and airborne dust all introduce noise into the point cloud, creating false returns that don’t correspond to real objects. In heavy rain, water droplets produce a fog-like haze of noisy points concentrated near the sensor. Snow creates a similar scattered noise pattern.
Dense fog is the most punishing condition. When visibility drops below about 40 meters, the effective range of a LiDAR sensor can shrink to just 25 meters. Fewer solid returns mean fewer reliable features for the system to latch onto, which compromises both object detection and the sensor’s ability to determine its own position. This is why radar remains essential as a complementary sensor: it cuts through rain, fog, and darkness with minimal degradation.
Archaeology and Forest Mapping
One of LiDAR’s most dramatic applications is its ability to see through dense vegetation. When laser pulses hit a forest canopy, some bounce back from the treetops, but others slip through gaps between leaves and branches and continue down to the ground. By filtering out the vegetation returns and keeping only the ground-level points, researchers can produce a bare-earth elevation model that reveals features completely hidden under the forest floor.
In 2018, a team of archaeologists used airborne LiDAR to scan the Petén forest in Guatemala and discovered more than 60,000 previously unknown structures, including isolated houses, large palaces, ceremonial centers, and pyramids belonging to the ancient Maya civilization. The find demonstrated that LiDAR doesn’t just produce dramatic images of “lost cities in the jungle,” as Tulane University researchers put it, but can also help map patterns of wealth, population density, and social organization across entire regions that would take decades to survey on foot.
LiDAR in Your Pocket
Since 2020, Apple has included a small LiDAR scanner in its Pro-tier iPhones and iPads. The sensor fires pulses of light up to about five meters away and builds a rough 3D map of a room or object in real time. It’s far less precise than a surveying-grade system, but it’s remarkably useful for everyday tasks.
Free apps like 3D Scanner App and Polycam use the phone’s LiDAR sensor alongside its cameras to create 3D models you can rotate, measure, and export. People use it to scan rooms before buying furniture, create 3D models of objects for 3D printing, measure spaces without a tape measure, and improve augmented reality experiences. Geoscientists have even used phone-based LiDAR for quick field measurements of rock outcrops and terrain features, turning a consumer device into a lightweight surveying tool.
