What Is LPN and LVN? Roles, Salary, and Differences

LPN and LVN are two titles for the same nursing role. LPN stands for Licensed Practical Nurse, while LVN stands for Licensed Vocational Nurse. The difference is purely geographic: Texas and California use the title LVN, while the remaining 48 states use LPN. The training, licensing exam, scope of practice, and pay are identical regardless of which title appears on your badge.

Why Two Names for the Same Job

When practical nursing programs were formalized in the mid-20th century, Texas and California adopted “vocational nurse” in their state laws while the rest of the country went with “practical nurse.” Neither state has changed the terminology since, so the split persists today. If you hold an LVN license in California and move to, say, Illinois, you would apply for an LPN license through that state’s board of nursing. You may need to meet the new state’s specific requirements, but the credential itself carries the same weight.

What LPNs and LVNs Actually Do

LPNs and LVNs provide basic bedside nursing care under the supervision of a registered nurse (RN) or physician. Day-to-day tasks typically include checking vital signs like blood pressure, heart rate, and temperature; changing wound dressings; collecting samples for lab tests; and helping patients with bathing, dressing, and eating. They also document patient information and report any changes in condition to the supervising RN or doctor.

The key distinction from an RN is autonomy. RNs perform full patient assessments, develop care plans, administer IV medications, and supervise other nursing staff. LPNs and LVNs handle more routine clinical tasks and escalate concerns up the chain. In long-term care facilities like nursing homes, an LPN or LVN may serve as a charge nurse, managing nursing assistants and other LPNs, but they still operate under the general supervision of an RN and follow written protocols the RN has established.

LPNs and LVNs can also delegate certain tasks to nursing assistants and other unlicensed support staff, so they sit in the middle of the nursing hierarchy: supervised by RNs and physicians, while directing the work of aides below them.

Education and Licensing

Becoming an LPN or LVN requires completing a state-approved practical nursing program. Full-time programs typically run 12 to 14 months, while part-time tracks take 18 to 20 months. The curriculum covers anatomy and physiology, pharmacology, medical-surgical nursing, pediatric and maternity nursing, nutrition, mental health, gerontology, and end-of-life care. Programs also include supervised clinical hours in real healthcare settings.

After finishing the program, graduates must pass the NCLEX-PN, a national licensing exam. Passing this exam is what earns you the LPN or LVN title, depending on your state. The exam is the same nationwide.

How LPN/LVN Differs From RN

The biggest differences come down to education length, scope of practice, and decision-making authority. RN programs require either an associate degree (about two years) or a bachelor’s degree (four years), compared to roughly one year for practical nursing. RNs take a separate, more advanced licensing exam called the NCLEX-RN.

On the floor, RNs carry broader clinical responsibilities. They perform comprehensive patient assessments, create and modify care plans, administer a wider range of medications including IV treatments, operate complex medical equipment, and coordinate care with physicians and specialists. LPNs and LVNs handle the foundational nursing work that keeps patients safe and comfortable but defer higher-level clinical decisions to the RN.

Where LPNs and LVNs Work

Nursing homes and long-term care facilities employ the largest share of LPNs and LVNs. These settings rely heavily on practical nurses because much of the daily care involves monitoring stable patients, administering routine medications, and assisting with activities of daily living. Other common workplaces include hospitals, physician offices, home health agencies, and outpatient clinics. Some LPNs and LVNs also work in rehabilitation centers and assisted living communities.

Salary and Job Outlook

The median annual wage for LPNs and LVNs was $62,340 as of May 2024, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Employment in the field is projected to grow 3 percent from 2024 to 2034, which matches the average growth rate across all occupations. Demand stays steady largely because of an aging population that needs more long-term and chronic care.

Advancing From LPN/LVN to RN

Many practical nurses eventually pursue an RN license through bridge programs designed specifically for working LPNs and LVNs. An LPN-to-Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN) bridge program typically takes 16 months to two years. These programs give credit for the coursework and clinical experience you already have, so you skip the introductory content that new nursing students cover. If you want a bachelor’s degree instead, LPN-to-BSN programs generally take up to 28 months or more. Either path leads to the NCLEX-RN exam, and passing it upgrades your license, your scope of practice, and your earning potential.
