Lumecca is a high-powered intense pulsed light (IPL) device made by InMode that treats sun damage, brown spots, redness, and visible blood vessels on the skin. It delivers up to three times the power of traditional IPL systems, which means most people see noticeable improvement in one to three sessions rather than the five or more that older devices typically require.
How Lumecca Works
Like all IPL devices, Lumecca sends broad-spectrum light into the skin, where it’s absorbed by two main targets: melanin (the pigment in dark spots and freckles) and hemoglobin (the red pigment inside blood vessels). When those targets absorb the light energy, they heat up and break apart. Your body then clears the damaged pigment and collapsed vessels naturally over the following days and weeks.
What sets Lumecca apart is its peak power. The device delivers 3.3 kilowatts per square centimeter, significantly higher than most IPL platforms. That extra energy means each pulse does more work, so fewer passes and fewer sessions are needed to get results. Lumecca operates across a wavelength range of 515 to 1,200 nanometers, with two interchangeable handpieces: a 515 nm filter optimized for lighter skin and a 580 nm filter designed for medium skin tones. The provider selects the appropriate handpiece and energy level (anywhere from 5 to 30 joules per square centimeter) based on your skin type and what’s being treated.
What Lumecca Treats
Lumecca is FDA-cleared for superficial vascular and pigmented lesions. In practical terms, that covers:
- Sun spots, age spots, and freckles caused by years of UV exposure
- Uneven skin tone and general sun damage across the face, chest, or hands
- Redness and rosacea-related flushing
- Visible blood vessels (broken capillaries, spider veins on the face)
It works best on lighter to medium skin tones, specifically Fitzpatrick skin types I through IV. The 515 nm handpiece is recommended for very fair to fair skin (types I and II), while the 580 nm handpiece is safer for light-to-medium and olive complexions (types III and IV). Darker skin types carry a higher risk of burns and pigment changes with IPL in general, so Lumecca is not typically used on those skin tones.
What the Treatment Feels Like
A Lumecca session is quick, usually 15 to 30 minutes for a full face. The handpiece has a built-in sapphire cooling tip that chills the skin’s surface during each pulse, which helps with comfort and reduces redness afterward. Most people describe the sensation as a warm snap or rubber-band flick. It’s not painless, but it’s tolerable without numbing cream for the majority of patients. Your provider may still offer a topical anesthetic if you’re treating a sensitive area like the nose or upper lip.
Immediately after treatment, the skin looks flushed, similar to a mild sunburn. This redness typically fades within a few hours to a day.
Recovery and What to Expect Afterward
The most distinctive part of Lumecca recovery is watching your brown spots get darker before they get better. Within 24 to 48 hours, treated pigmented spots will darken noticeably, sometimes turning a coffee-brown or even grayish color. This is a sign the treatment worked. Over the following week, those darkened spots flake off on their own, revealing clearer, more even-toned skin underneath.
Vascular concerns like redness and broken capillaries respond differently. Rather than darkening and flaking, redness gradually fades over several days to weeks as the damaged blood vessels are reabsorbed by the body.
During recovery, you should avoid direct sunlight for at least one week and apply broad-spectrum sunscreen with at least SPF 30 daily. Sun exposure after IPL increases the risk of rebound pigmentation, where treated spots come back darker than before. This is the single most important aftercare step.
Number of Sessions
Most people need one to three Lumecca sessions spaced four to six weeks apart. Many notice significant improvement after just the first treatment, which is unusual for IPL. Traditional IPL platforms often require five or more sessions to reach the same level of correction.
Deeper or more extensive sun damage may require up to five sessions. Your provider will evaluate your skin after each treatment and recommend whether additional rounds are needed. Results are cumulative, so each session builds on the last.
How Lumecca Compares to Traditional IPL
The core technology is the same: broad-spectrum pulsed light targeting pigment and blood vessels. The differences come down to power, efficiency, and comfort. Lumecca’s higher peak power means each pulse delivers more energy in a shorter burst, which makes treatment faster and reduces the total number of sessions. Traditional IPL devices spread their energy across a wider, less concentrated output, so they need more repeat visits to achieve comparable results.
Lumecca’s sapphire cooling tip also represents an upgrade over older IPL systems, many of which relied on chilled gel applied to the skin rather than integrated cooling. The built-in tip provides more consistent temperature control, which reduces the risk of skin irritation and makes the procedure more comfortable overall.
That said, Lumecca is not a fundamentally different category of treatment. If you’ve had good results with traditional IPL in the past, Lumecca simply offers a more efficient path to similar outcomes. If you’ve been told IPL isn’t appropriate for your skin type, Lumecca carries the same limitations.
