Masteron is the brand name for drostanolone, an injectable anabolic-androgenic steroid derived from dihydrotestosterone (DHT). Originally developed to treat advanced breast cancer in postmenopausal women, it has largely disappeared from clinical medicine and is now primarily used in bodybuilding for its ability to produce a lean, hard, defined look without water retention.

Medical Origins

Drostanolone propionate was introduced under brand names like Drolban, Masterid, and Permastril as a palliative treatment for inoperable, metastatic breast cancer. According to National Cancer Institute records, it was administered by intramuscular injection to certain postmenopausal women. Its anti-estrogenic properties made it useful in cancers that responded to hormonal manipulation. As newer, more targeted cancer therapies emerged, drostanolone fell out of medical use almost entirely. Today it is not commonly prescribed for any condition.

How Masteron Works in the Body

Because it is derived from DHT, Masteron does not convert into estrogen in the body. This is its defining characteristic and the reason bodybuilders favor it. Most anabolic steroids undergo a process called aromatization, where testosterone-based compounds are partially converted into estrogen, leading to water retention, bloating, and sometimes breast tissue growth in men. Masteron skips this entirely.

Instead, it binds directly to androgen receptors, increasing the rate at which your body retains nitrogen and synthesizes protein, both of which support muscle tissue. It also has mild anti-estrogenic activity, meaning it can reduce the effects of circulating estrogen. This combination produces what users describe as a “hardening” effect: muscles look denser, more vascular, and more defined. The compound also appears to promote fat breakdown (lipolysis), contributing to a drier overall appearance.

That said, the visual effects of Masteron are highly dependent on body fat levels. Users who are already lean, typically below 12 percent body fat, notice the most dramatic changes in muscle definition. At higher body fat percentages, the hardening and vascularity effects are largely invisible, which is why it’s considered a finishing or cosmetic compound rather than something used for building significant muscle mass.

Propionate vs. Enanthate

Masteron comes in two forms, distinguished by the ester attached to the drostanolone molecule. The ester controls how quickly the drug is released into the bloodstream after injection.

  • Masteron Propionate has a half-life of roughly 2 to 3 days, requiring injections every other day or even daily to maintain stable blood levels.
  • Masteron Enanthate has a half-life of about 7 to 10 days, allowing for just one or two injections per week.

The active compound is identical in both versions. The practical difference is convenience versus injection frequency. Propionate is the original and more widely available form. Enanthate is easier to manage on a schedule but can be harder to source. Propionate also clears the body faster, which matters for anyone subject to drug testing.

How Bodybuilders Use It

Masteron is not a mass-building steroid. It is almost exclusively used during cutting phases or in the final weeks before a physique competition, where the goal is maximum definition and a dry, vascular look. Bodybuilders sometimes describe it as adding “visual polish” to a physique that is already lean.

Typical male dosages reported in performance-enhancement literature fall around 100 to 150 milligrams injected every other day, with cycles lasting up to 12 weeks. It is rarely used alone and is usually stacked with other compounds. Women face a much higher risk of virilization (development of masculine traits like voice deepening and facial hair growth) due to its strong androgenic nature, and reliable dosage data for female users is limited.

Side Effects and Health Risks

Masteron is often described as “mild” in bodybuilding circles, but this label is misleading. While it does avoid estrogen-related side effects like water retention, it carries its own set of risks, most of them tied to its potent androgenic activity.

Androgenic Effects

As a DHT derivative, Masteron accelerates hair loss in anyone genetically predisposed to male-pattern baldness. It can also cause acne, oily skin, and increased body hair growth. These effects are dose-dependent but can occur even at moderate doses, and hair loss in particular is often irreversible. Women are especially vulnerable to masculinizing effects including clitoral enlargement, menstrual irregularities, and permanent voice changes.

Cardiovascular Impact

Anabolic steroids as a class negatively affect cholesterol levels, and Masteron is no exception. Research on androgenic steroids in animal models has shown significant decreases in HDL cholesterol (the protective kind) with chronic use. Over time, this shift toward an unfavorable lipid profile increases the risk of atherosclerosis and cardiovascular events. Because Masteron cannot be taken orally and does not pass through the liver the same way oral steroids do, some users assume it is safe for the cardiovascular system. This is incorrect. Injectable androgens still suppress HDL and can elevate blood pressure.

Hormonal Suppression

Like all anabolic steroids, Masteron suppresses your body’s natural testosterone production. During a cycle, the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal axis effectively shuts down because the body detects sufficient androgens from the external source. In the United States, drostanolone is classified as a Schedule III controlled substance under the Controlled Substances Act, listed under DEA drug code 4000. Possessing it without a valid prescription is a federal crime, and because it is no longer prescribed for any medical condition in practice, obtaining a legitimate prescription is essentially impossible. It is also banned by the World Anti-Doping Agency and virtually every professional and amateur sports organization. In many other countries, including the UK, Canada, and Australia, anabolic steroids carry similar legal restrictions, though the specifics vary by jurisdiction.
