What the Work Actually Involves

On a typical day, a medical data entry specialist enters patient demographics, medical histories, treatment details, and billing information into electronic health record (EHR) systems. When a physician updates a diagnosis or a nurse records new vitals, that information needs to make it into the system accurately and promptly. Data entry staff also support billing and coding teams by entering insurance and payment details, which means even small mistakes can delay reimbursements or trigger claim denials.

The work isn’t limited to typing. You’re also verifying that records are complete, cross-referencing information from multiple sources, and flagging inconsistencies. What this means in practice is that the role is shifting. Pure keystroke-heavy data entry is declining, while positions that involve reviewing AI-generated entries, correcting errors, and managing exceptions are growing. Workers who combine data entry skills with coding knowledge or quality assurance experience are better positioned than those who only type.

Salary and Job Growth

The Bureau of Labor Statistics groups medical data entry work under “medical records specialists.” As of May 2024, the median pay for this category was $50,250 per year, or about $24.16 per hour. Employment is projected to grow 7% from 2024 to 2034, which the BLS classifies as “much faster than average.” That translates to roughly 13,800 new positions over the decade.

Pay varies significantly by setting and location.
