Meloxicam is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) prescribed to dogs primarily for pain and inflammation caused by osteoarthritis. It’s one of the most commonly used pain medications in veterinary medicine, FDA-approved specifically for managing the chronic joint pain that affects many dogs as they age. Veterinarians also use it to control pain after surgical procedures.
How Meloxicam Works
Like other NSAIDs, meloxicam reduces pain by blocking the production of prostaglandins, chemicals your dog’s body releases in response to injury or inflammation. What makes meloxicam particularly useful is its selectivity. It preferentially targets the enzyme responsible for inflammation (COX-2) while largely sparing the enzyme that protects the stomach lining and supports kidney function (COX-1). In canine blood tests, meloxicam is 2.7 to 10 times more selective for COX-2 than COX-1, which is why it tends to cause fewer gut problems than older, less selective pain relievers like aspirin.
This selectivity isn’t absolute, though. Meloxicam still carries risks to the stomach, kidneys, and liver, especially with long-term use. That’s why veterinary monitoring matters for dogs taking it regularly.
Conditions It Treats
The FDA-approved use of meloxicam in dogs is for controlling pain and inflammation associated with osteoarthritis. This is by far its most common application. Dogs with osteoarthritis experience cartilage breakdown in their joints, leading to stiffness, limping, reluctance to jump or climb stairs, and general discomfort. Meloxicam doesn’t reverse the joint damage, but it reduces the inflammatory response enough that many dogs become noticeably more active and comfortable within a few days of starting treatment.
Veterinarians frequently prescribe meloxicam for post-surgical pain as well, particularly after orthopedic procedures or spay and neuter surgeries. In these cases, it’s typically given as a single injection at the clinic, sometimes followed by one additional oral dose at home 24 hours later.
How It’s Given
Meloxicam for dogs comes in two main forms: an injectable solution your vet administers at the clinic and a flavored oral liquid you give at home. The oral suspension is the more common form for ongoing treatment. It comes in two concentrations (1.5 mg/mL and 0.5 mg/mL) and is given once daily, mixed into food or squirted directly into your dog’s mouth.
The product includes a dosing syringe marked by body weight rather than milliliters, which simplifies measuring. For very small dogs under 5 pounds, the syringe isn’t precise enough. Instead, the manufacturer recommends using the dropper bottle: one drop per pound of body weight for the 1.5 mg/mL concentration. Always shake the bottle before drawing up a dose.
Meloxicam absorbs equally well on an empty or full stomach. That said, if your dog develops mild stomach upset, giving it with food often helps. Human-formulation tablets (7.5 mg and 15 mg) exist, but these are not veterinary-approved products and should only be used if your vet specifically prescribes them with precise dosing instructions. The concentration difference between human and veterinary formulations makes accidental overdose a real concern.
Dogs Who Shouldn’t Take It
Meloxicam has not been evaluated for safety in dogs younger than 6 months, pregnant or lactating dogs, or dogs used for breeding. Puppies’ kidneys and livers are still developing, making them more vulnerable to the drug’s side effects.
Dogs with pre-existing kidney disease, liver disease, or gastrointestinal ulcers are poor candidates for any NSAID, including meloxicam. Dehydrated dogs are also at higher risk because reduced blood flow to the kidneys amplifies the drug’s potential to cause kidney damage.
One critical rule: never combine meloxicam with another NSAID (like carprofen or aspirin) or with corticosteroids such as prednisone. Stacking these medications dramatically increases the risk of stomach ulcers, kidney injury, and internal bleeding. If your dog is switching from one of these drugs to meloxicam, your vet will typically build in a drug-free washout period between them.
Side Effects to Watch For
The most common side effects involve the digestive system. You might notice decreased appetite, vomiting, diarrhea, or dark or tarry stools. Dark stools are especially important to flag because they can indicate bleeding in the stomach or intestines.
Kidney and liver problems are less common but more serious. Signs of kidney trouble include increased thirst, increased urination, or changes in urine color. Liver issues can show up as yellowing of the gums or eyes, lethargy, or loss of appetite. Some dogs also develop changes in behavior or energy level that don’t have an obvious explanation.
If your dog shows any of these signs, stop the medication and contact your vet. Most side effects are reversible when caught early, but continued dosing through warning signs can lead to significant organ damage.
What Happens in an Overdose
Meloxicam overdoses in dogs most often happen when a dog chews into a bottle of the flavored liquid or when a human-strength tablet is given without proper dose adjustment. There is no specific antidote. The primary risks are gastrointestinal bleeding, acute kidney injury, and liver damage.
Early signs of overdose include severe loss of appetite, vomiting, loose or black stools, and straining to defecate. In more serious cases, kidney values climb rapidly on blood work and urine output changes. Veterinary treatment focuses on decontamination (if the ingestion was recent), intravenous fluids to protect the kidneys, and medications to reduce stomach acid and coat the GI tract. In severe cases, more advanced interventions like therapeutic plasma exchange have been used to clear the drug from the bloodstream faster.
If you suspect your dog ingested an overdose, getting to a veterinary emergency clinic quickly matters. Early treatment before organ damage sets in leads to much better outcomes.
Monitoring During Long-Term Use
Because osteoarthritis is a chronic condition, many dogs take meloxicam for months or years. The FDA recommends regular checkups along with periodic blood and urine tests to confirm the drug remains safe for continued use. Most veterinarians run baseline bloodwork before starting meloxicam, then recheck within the first few weeks of treatment. After that, testing every 6 to 12 months is typical for dogs on long-term therapy, though dogs with borderline kidney or liver values may need more frequent monitoring.
These tests check kidney function, liver enzymes, and red blood cell counts. They can catch subclinical problems before your dog shows any outward signs of trouble. The cost of periodic labwork is a real consideration for many owners, but it’s the trade-off that makes long-term NSAID use reasonably safe. Dogs that tolerate meloxicam well in the first few months generally continue to do well, though age-related changes in organ function mean the risk profile can shift over time.
