What Is Metoclopramide Used for in Dogs?

Metoclopramide is a medication veterinarians prescribe to dogs primarily to control nausea and vomiting and to help food move through the stomach more efficiently. It works in two ways: it blocks dopamine receptors in the brain’s vomiting center to suppress nausea, and it strengthens the contractions of the upper digestive tract to push food forward. This dual action makes it one of the more versatile gastrointestinal drugs in veterinary medicine.

Primary Uses in Dogs

The most common reason a vet will prescribe metoclopramide is persistent vomiting. Dogs vomit for dozens of reasons, from dietary indiscretion to kidney disease to chemotherapy side effects, and metoclopramide can help manage the nausea across many of these situations. It’s particularly useful when vomiting is caused by something systemic rather than a simple upset stomach, because it acts directly on the brain’s chemoreceptor trigger zone.

The second major use is as a prokinetic, meaning it speeds up gastric emptying. Dogs with gastroparesis (a condition where the stomach empties too slowly) or other motility disorders benefit because metoclopramide strengthens coordinated contractions in the stomach and upper small intestine. This helps food move downstream instead of sitting in the stomach and causing discomfort, bloating, or repeated vomiting. Vets also sometimes prescribe it for gastroesophageal reflux, though research in anesthetized dogs found that metoclopramide did not significantly reduce reflux episodes compared to untreated dogs, so its effectiveness for reflux specifically may be limited.

How It’s Given

Metoclopramide comes in oral tablets, liquid, and injectable forms. The standard dose for dogs is 0.2 to 0.5 mg/kg given by mouth or injection every eight hours. For dogs that can’t keep pills down, vets may administer it as a slow intravenous drip at a much lower rate of 0.01 to 0.02 mg/kg per hour. This continuous infusion approach is common in hospitalized dogs, such as those being treated for severe illness with unrelenting nausea.

Your vet will determine the right dose and form based on your dog’s weight, the severity of symptoms, and whether your dog can tolerate oral medication. The drug is typically given 30 minutes before meals when used to improve gastric motility, since the goal is to have it working by the time food arrives in the stomach.

Side Effects to Watch For

Side effects are uncommon with metoclopramide, but the ones that do occur stem from the drug’s ability to cross from the bloodstream into the brain. The most noticeable reactions fall into two opposite categories: some dogs become drowsy and lethargic, while others become unusually hyperactive or restless. If your dog shows signs of marked hyperactivity, diphenhydramine (the active ingredient in Benadryl) can reverse it. Constipation has also been reported in some dogs, though this is not a frequent issue.

The more serious concern involves dogs with epilepsy or a history of seizures. Because metoclopramide affects brain chemistry, it can lower the seizure threshold in predisposed animals. This shouldn’t be a problem in dogs without a seizure history, but it’s important that your vet knows your dog’s full medical background before prescribing it.

Drug Interactions

Several common veterinary medications interfere with metoclopramide, sometimes in ways that completely cancel out its benefits. Opioid pain medications and anticholinergic drugs (like atropine, sometimes used during surgery) negate the prokinetic effect entirely, meaning the gut-motility benefits disappear. If your dog is recovering from surgery and receiving pain medication, your vet may choose a different anti-nausea drug for this reason.

Certain tranquilizers used in veterinary practice should not be combined with metoclopramide because both drug types block dopamine in the brain. Stacking these effects raises the risk of extrapyramidal reactions, which are involuntary muscle movements like tremors, stiffness, or abnormal postures. These reactions are uncommon but alarming when they happen.

There are also subtler interactions worth knowing about. Because metoclopramide speeds up how quickly the stomach empties, medications that are normally absorbed in the stomach may not have enough time to dissolve properly, reducing their effectiveness. On the flip side, food reaches the intestines faster, which can increase how quickly nutrients are absorbed. For diabetic dogs on insulin, this accelerated absorption may mean their insulin needs adjustment.

When Metoclopramide Should Not Be Used

The most critical contraindication is a suspected gastrointestinal blockage. Metoclopramide works by pushing stomach contents forward with stronger contractions. If something is physically blocking the intestinal tract, like a swallowed toy, bone fragment, or tumor, forcing the gut to contract harder against that obstruction can cause a perforation or rupture. This is why vets typically rule out a blockage with imaging before starting metoclopramide in a vomiting dog.

Dogs with known seizure disorders, those currently taking opioid painkillers, or those on certain types of tranquilizers are also poor candidates. If your dog falls into any of these categories, alternatives like maropitant (a newer anti-nausea drug designed specifically for dogs) are often a better fit.
