What Is Multisensory Learning and Why Does It Work?

Multisensory learning is an instructional approach that engages two or more senses at the same time, helping the brain form stronger, more durable memories than single-sense methods alone. Often called the VAKT model (visual, auditory, kinesthetic, tactile), it works by layering seeing, hearing, moving, and touching into the same learning experience. A child tracing a letter in sand while saying its sound out loud is using three sensory channels simultaneously. That redundancy is the whole point: the more pathways the brain uses to encode information, the easier it is to retrieve later.

Why Multiple Senses Strengthen Memory

Your brain doesn’t store memories in one neat location. It maintains two functionally independent memory systems: one for verbal information (words, labels, numbers) and one for images and spatial relationships. This idea, known as Dual Coding Theory, explains why combining a spoken explanation with a visual diagram beats either one alone. When a concept gets encoded in both systems, you essentially have two separate memory traces instead of one, roughly doubling your chances of retrieving it later.

There’s an important constraint that makes this work. When you try to do two tasks that rely on the same type of mental processing, like reading text while also listening to a podcast, they compete for the same resources and your performance drops. But pairing a verbal task with a visual or physical one draws on different processing channels, so neither task degrades the other. This is why watching a narrated animation feels manageable while reading subtitles over a dense text slide feels overwhelming. Multisensory learning takes advantage of this by deliberately spreading information across channels that complement rather than compete with each other.

What Happens in the Brain

Neurons throughout the brain are built to combine input from different senses. When signals from two senses arrive at the same time and from the same source, they reinforce each other. The brain treats them as mutually confirming evidence that something real is happening, and the neural response is stronger than either signal would produce on its own. This is called multisensory integration, and it follows a straightforward rule: when cross-modal signals are congruent (matching in time and space), the brain amplifies them. When they conflict, it either ignores one or produces a weaker, confused response.

This integration isn’t limited to one brain area. While early research focused on a midbrain structure called the superior colliculus, scientists have since found multisensory neurons distributed widely across the cortex, including in regions once thought to handle only a single sense. Even the borders between “visual” and “auditory” brain areas are populated with neurons that respond to both. The brain, in other words, is wired for multisensory processing from the ground up.

How It Helps With Dyslexia and ADHD

Children with dyslexia often struggle not just with sounding out words but with linking verbal labels to visual symbols. Research suggests the core difficulty may be atypical timing of audio-visual processing: the brain doesn’t synchronize what the child sees on the page with what they hear. This points to a broader nervous system impairment in integrating multisensory information rather than a simple deficit in phonics or motor skills. Multisensory reading programs, which have students see a letter, say its sound, and trace its shape simultaneously, work by giving the brain multiple synchronized inputs, essentially creating additional routes around the processing bottleneck.

For children with ADHD, the picture overlaps in interesting ways. A high percentage of kids with attention disorders also have sensory processing difficulties, including trouble with balance and motor coordination. Anatomical evidence suggests that ineffective multisensory maps in the cortex may partly explain why sensory processing problems and ADHD so frequently co-occur. By structuring lessons to engage several senses, teachers can capture and hold attention through varied input rather than relying on a single channel that the child’s brain may struggle to sustain focus on.

How It Reduces Cognitive Overload

Your brain can only process so much information at once. When a single sensory channel gets saturated, like a dense slide packed with text while a teacher lectures, new details start getting dropped. Multisensory learning distributes the load. Research on incidental learning in children found that when a task included bimodal information (both auditory and visual), children performed better than when the same task used auditory information alone. The addition of a second sensory channel didn’t increase cognitive load. Instead, it appeared to focus attention and help filter out distractions.

This filtering effect matters in busy classrooms. When visual and auditory information are redundant (conveying the same concept through different formats), the brain processes them more efficiently, freeing up working memory for deeper thinking. Working memory acts as a temporary workspace where your brain connects new material to what you already know, and multisensory input supports that connection by keeping the workspace from getting clogged with a single type of data.

Practical Examples in the Classroom

In math, physical objects turn abstract operations into something students can see and feel. Addition and subtraction become tangible when kids combine or remove sets of beads, watching quantities change in their hands. For number patterns, stacking cubes in groups of 2, 4, 6, and 8, then building the next stack, lets students physically construct the sequence before translating it to numbers on paper. Tapping out multiples gives kids a rhythmic, bodily sense of numerical value, connecting a symbol to an actual felt quantity.

In reading, the classic approach has students trace letters in sand or shaving cream while saying the letter sound aloud. The hand movement (kinesthetic), the texture (tactile), the visual shape, and the spoken sound all converge on a single concept. Science classes use similar principles when students build molecular models they can rotate and examine, or when they act out the water cycle by moving through stations representing evaporation, condensation, and precipitation. In each case, the abstract concept gets anchored to a physical experience.

Technology and Multisensory Learning

Augmented reality is emerging as a powerful multisensory tool. AR apps overlay digital content onto the physical world, letting students rotate a 3D heart model on their desk or watch chemical reactions unfold in front of them. Research consistently finds that AR converts abstract concepts into concrete experiences, improving both comprehension and memory. The interactive nature of AR also supports collaborative learning: students working with shared AR models contribute more actively during group work than they do with traditional materials.

What makes AR genuinely multisensory, rather than just visual, is the physical interaction it requires. Students move around objects, gesture to manipulate them, and discuss what they see with peers. This combination of spatial movement, visual feedback, and verbal processing activates the same cross-modal reinforcement that makes hands-on learning effective, just with digital content that can simulate things no classroom supply closet could hold, like the interior of a cell or the surface of Mars.
