Multispectral refers to capturing light across multiple distinct bands of the electromagnetic spectrum, typically between 3 and 10 bands. Where a standard camera records only the red, green, and blue light your eyes can see, a multispectral sensor also captures wavelengths you can’t see, like near-infrared and shortwave infrared. This extra information reveals details about objects, landscapes, and even living tissue that are invisible to the naked eye.
How Multispectral Sensors Work
Every material reflects and absorbs light differently at different wavelengths. A healthy leaf, for instance, absorbs most visible red light but strongly reflects near-infrared light. A stressed or dying leaf reflects less infrared. A multispectral sensor splits incoming light into separate channels, each covering a specific slice of the spectrum, so these differences can be measured precisely.
The hardware for doing this comes in several forms. Some systems use a rotating wheel of interchangeable filters that sits in front of a single image sensor, exposing one band at a time. Others use a beam splitter to divide light into separate paths, each hitting its own detector. A newer approach places tiny spectral filters directly onto individual pixels of the sensor chip in a mosaic pattern, capturing all bands in a single snapshot. The choice depends on the application: filter wheels are cheap and modular, while mosaic sensors are faster and better suited for drones or moving platforms.
Multispectral vs. Hyperspectral
The key distinction is resolution and quantity. Multispectral sensors capture 3 to 10 relatively wide bands. Hyperspectral sensors capture hundreds or even thousands of very narrow bands, each only 10 to 20 nanometers wide. Think of it like the difference between sorting crayons into a few color groups versus arranging them across a full 200-shade gradient. Multispectral gives you enough spectral information for most practical tasks at lower cost and with simpler data processing. Hyperspectral provides far more chemical detail but generates massive datasets that require specialized analysis.
Precision Agriculture and Plant Health
Agriculture is one of the most widespread uses of multispectral imaging. Sensors mounted on drones or satellites capture visible red and near-infrared light reflected by crops, then combine these into a vegetation index called NDVI (Normalized Difference Vegetation Index). The math is straightforward: subtract the red reflectance from the near-infrared reflectance, then divide by their sum. Healthy plants absorb red light for photosynthesis and reflect near-infrared strongly, producing high NDVI values. Stressed, diseased, or nutrient-deprived plants show lower values.
This allows farmers to generate color-coded maps of entire fields that highlight problem zones long before the damage is visible to the eye. Early growth stages can be tricky because sparse leaf cover lets soil reflectance influence the readings, but correction techniques improve accuracy during those periods. Beyond NDVI, other indices derived from multispectral data measure leaf area, chlorophyll concentration, and the red-edge transition zone where healthy vegetation reflectance shifts sharply, giving a more complete picture of crop condition across an entire growing season.
Satellite Remote Sensing
Two of the most widely used multispectral satellite systems are Landsat 8, operated by NASA and the U.S. Geological Survey, and Sentinel-2, operated by the European Space Agency. Landsat 8 captures data at 30-meter spatial resolution, meaning each pixel represents a 30-by-30-meter patch of ground. Sentinel-2 offers finer detail with resolution down to 10 meters and carries 13 spectral bands, including red-edge bands that are especially useful for vegetation studies. Sentinel-2 also revisits the same location more frequently, making it better for tracking changes over short time intervals.
These satellites monitor land cover change, urban expansion, deforestation, wildfire damage, and water resources on a global scale. Because the data is freely available, researchers, governments, and conservation groups all rely on it.
Ocean and Environmental Monitoring
In marine environments, multispectral sensors on ocean color satellites detect chlorophyll concentrations in surface water by measuring how strongly the water absorbs and reflects light at specific wavelengths. Chlorophyll absorbs light most strongly around 443 nanometers (deep blue), and sensors use the ratio between reflectance at that band and neighboring bands to estimate how much phytoplankton is present. Scientists classify ocean waters by these readings: oligotrophic (very low productivity) waters contain less than about 0.1 milligrams of chlorophyll per cubic meter, while eutrophic waters exceed roughly 1.67 milligrams per cubic meter. This data tracks algal blooms, maps nutrient runoff from coastlines, and feeds into global climate models since phytoplankton absorb significant amounts of carbon dioxide.
Medical Imaging
Multispectral imaging is gaining traction in clinical settings because different tissues and disease states reflect light differently across wavelengths. In ophthalmology, it functions as a layer-by-layer imaging technique that visualizes structures in the retina and the deeper choroid layer without injecting contrast dyes. It has been investigated for diagnosing and staging diabetic retinopathy at various severity levels, and for identifying a condition called polypoidal choroidal vasculopathy with a sensitivity of about 84% and specificity of 93%. Researchers have also used it to study retinal changes associated with Alzheimer’s disease, looking for biomarkers that might appear before cognitive symptoms do. Smartphone-based multispectral systems are being developed for skin cancer screening, potentially bringing the technology to primary care and field settings.
Food Safety and Quality Control
In food processing, multispectral cameras inspect products on fast-moving production lines for contamination and fraud. When paired with machine learning, these systems can detect the presence of one type of meat mixed into another. Predicting different levels of pork adulteration in chicken (and vice versa) has achieved accuracy scores above 90%, and identifying bovine offal mixed into beef has also proven reliable. Fish species that look nearly identical to the human eye, like seabass and seabream fillets, can be distinguished with over 93% accuracy. The same technology estimates bacterial counts on the surface of chicken fillets and seaweed, giving processors a rapid, non-contact alternative to traditional lab cultures that take days to return results.
Art Conservation and Archaeology
Multispectral imaging reveals what the human eye cannot in historical paintings and artifacts. By combining infrared, red, green, and blue channels into false-color images, conservators can see underdrawings beneath painted surfaces, identify pigment compositions, and recover details lost to centuries of deterioration. Researchers applied these techniques to wall paintings in the Tomb of the Monkey, an Etruscan site near Chiusi, Italy, dated to around 480 to 470 BC. The paintings had suffered significant damage from environmental exposure and bacterial colonization that left whitish spots obscuring the original imagery. Multispectral processing highlighted details that were invisible in any single-band image, including features obscured by biodegradation.
A technique called the Chromatic Derivative method generates false-color images based on the first derivative of the reflectivity curve, preserving information from all captured bands rather than discarding channels to fit a three-color display. This approach lets art historians study the full spectral signature of pigments like hematite, charcoal black, and Egyptian blue without physically sampling or touching the fragile surfaces.
