What Is Normal Blood Pressure and Pulse by Age?

For adults, normal blood pressure is below 120/80 mmHg, and a normal resting pulse is 60 to 100 beats per minute. Children have lower blood pressure but faster heart rates, and both numbers shift as you age. Here’s what to expect at every stage of life.

Adult Blood Pressure Categories

The American Heart Association defines four blood pressure categories for adults 18 and older. These apply regardless of age, meaning the same thresholds hold whether you’re 25 or 75:

  • Normal: below 120 systolic and below 80 diastolic
  • Elevated: 120 to 129 systolic with diastolic still below 80
  • Stage 1 hypertension: 130 to 139 systolic or 80 to 89 diastolic
  • Stage 2 hypertension: 140 or higher systolic, or 90 or higher diastolic

If your systolic and diastolic numbers fall into different categories, the higher category is the one that counts. So a reading of 135/75 would be classified as stage 1 hypertension because of the systolic number, even though the diastolic is normal.

Why Blood Pressure Rises With Age

Even though the clinical thresholds don’t change by age, your actual readings tend to creep upward over the decades. The main reason is that your large arteries, especially the aorta, gradually lose their elasticity. The elastic fibers in artery walls break down over time and get replaced by stiffer collagen fibers. This makes the arteries less able to absorb the force of each heartbeat, which pushes systolic pressure (the top number) higher.

This is why isolated systolic hypertension, where the top number is high but the bottom number stays normal or even drops, becomes increasingly common after age 60. It’s not a harmless part of aging. An NIH-funded trial called SPRINT found that lowering systolic blood pressure to below 120 in adults age 50 and older significantly reduced the risk of cardiovascular disease and death. The treatment target for older adults is the same as for younger ones.

Blood Pressure in Children

Children’s blood pressure is evaluated differently. Instead of fixed cutoffs, pediatric readings are compared against percentile charts based on the child’s age, sex, and height. A reading at or above the 95th percentile for a child’s demographic group is considered high. Here are some typical values at the 50th percentile for average-height children:

  • 1-year-old boy: around 80/34 mmHg
  • 1-year-old girl: around 83/38 mmHg
  • 10-year-old boy: around 97/58 mmHg
  • 10-year-old girl: around 98/59 mmHg

By adolescence, blood pressure gradually approaches adult levels. A 10-year-old with a reading of 115/77 or higher would be at the 95th percentile, which is the pediatric equivalent of high blood pressure. Taller children tend to have slightly higher normal readings than shorter children of the same age, which is why height factors into the percentile calculation.

Normal Resting Heart Rate by Age

Heart rate follows the opposite pattern from blood pressure: it starts high in infancy and slows down as you grow. These are the typical resting ranges when awake and not exercising:

  • Newborn (birth to 4 weeks): 100 to 205 bpm
  • Infant (4 weeks to 1 year): 100 to 180 bpm
  • Toddler (1 to 3 years): 98 to 140 bpm
  • Preschool (3 to 5 years): 80 to 120 bpm
  • School age (5 to 12 years): 75 to 118 bpm
  • Adolescent (13 to 17 years): 60 to 100 bpm
  • Adult (18 and older): 60 to 100 bpm

These ranges are broad because heart rate is highly individual. Your pulse may be lower during sleep and higher during activity, stress, or illness. The wide range in newborns reflects how rapidly an infant’s heart rate responds to stimulation like crying, feeding, or discomfort.

What Affects Your Resting Pulse

Fitness level is the single biggest modifier of resting heart rate. Well-conditioned athletes often have a resting pulse in the 40s or 50s because their hearts pump more blood per beat, so fewer beats are needed. A pulse of 48 in a competitive runner is perfectly healthy, while the same reading in a sedentary person could signal a problem.

A consistently elevated resting heart rate can be a sign of increased stress-hormone activity in the nervous system. Research tracking men over decades found that high resting heart rate is associated with greater risk of cardiovascular events. It’s also linked to metabolic changes like insulin resistance and abnormal cholesterol levels. If your resting pulse is regularly at the upper end of the normal range or above 100, it’s worth paying attention to, especially if you’re not physically active.

Medications also shift your baseline. Beta-blockers and certain calcium channel blockers lower heart rate, while decongestants, stimulants, and some asthma medications can raise it. Caffeine and nicotine both tend to push your resting pulse higher temporarily.

How to Get an Accurate Reading

A single blood pressure reading taken under the wrong conditions can be off by 10 to 20 points. To get a reliable number at home, sit in a comfortable chair with your back supported for at least five minutes before measuring. Keep both feet flat on the floor with legs uncrossed. Rest the arm with the cuff on a table so it’s at chest height, and place the cuff on bare skin rather than over a sleeve.

For pulse, the simplest method is to press two fingers (not your thumb, which has its own pulse) against the inside of your wrist or the side of your neck and count beats for 30 seconds, then double it. Many home blood pressure monitors display your pulse alongside your blood pressure reading, which saves the trouble.

Take readings at the same time of day, ideally in the morning before coffee or exercise. Blood pressure naturally fluctuates throughout the day, so a single measurement is less useful than an average of several readings taken over a week.

When Readings Signal an Emergency

A blood pressure reading of 180/120 or higher is considered a hypertensive crisis. If that reading comes with symptoms like chest pain, severe headache, shortness of breath, blurred vision, confusion, or signs of stroke (sudden numbness or weakness on one side of the body), call 911 immediately. A reading that high without symptoms still warrants urgent medical attention, but the presence of symptoms is what separates a life-threatening emergency from an urgent situation.

For heart rate, a resting pulse consistently above 100 bpm (called tachycardia) or below 60 bpm in a non-athlete (called bradycardia) deserves evaluation, especially if it comes with dizziness, fainting, or shortness of breath.
