A normal resting heart rate for adult women is 60 to 100 beats per minute (bpm). Most healthy women at rest will fall somewhere in this range, though fitness level, age, hormones, and pregnancy can shift that number significantly. Understanding where you fall within this range, and what might push your heart rate higher or lower, gives you a useful baseline for tracking your health.
Why Women’s Heart Rates Run Slightly Higher
Women tend to have a slightly faster resting heart rate than men, and the reason is straightforward: women’s hearts are physically smaller. A smaller heart pumps less blood with each beat. Studies comparing men and women show that men pump about 75 milliliters of blood per heartbeat, while women pump roughly 66 milliliters. To deliver the same amount of oxygen to the body, a smaller heart simply needs to beat more often. This difference is subtle, usually only a few beats per minute, but it’s consistent across age groups.
How Fitness Changes Your Resting Rate
The fitter you are, the lower your resting heart rate tends to be. Regular cardiovascular exercise strengthens the heart muscle, allowing it to push more blood per beat. Very fit women can have resting heart rates in the 40 to 50 bpm range, well below the standard 60 to 100 window. This is completely normal for someone who exercises regularly and doesn’t come with symptoms like dizziness or fatigue.
On the other end, a sedentary lifestyle can push your resting rate toward the upper part of the range. A resting heart rate consistently near 100 bpm isn’t necessarily dangerous on its own, but it can signal that your cardiovascular system is working harder than it needs to. Over time, bringing that number down through regular activity is one of the simplest markers of improving heart health.
Heart Rate Changes During Your Menstrual Cycle
Your heart rate isn’t static throughout the month. Hormonal shifts during the menstrual cycle create a predictable pattern: your resting heart rate increases slightly around ovulation and stays elevated during the week that follows (the luteal phase). It then dips during your period and the week after. These fluctuations are typically small, often just a few beats per minute, but they’re noticeable if you’re tracking your heart rate daily with a wearable device. This is normal and not a sign of a problem.
What Happens During Pregnancy
Pregnancy causes one of the most dramatic shifts in resting heart rate a woman will experience. Early in pregnancy, the heart rate begins climbing and continues to rise throughout all three trimesters, peaking in the third. A large study from the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health found that the median resting heart rate before pregnancy was about 65.5 bpm, rising to approximately 77 bpm in the third trimester. That’s an increase of 10 to 20 beats per minute, or roughly 20% to 25% above pre-pregnancy levels.
Walking heart rate follows a similar pattern. Before pregnancy, the median was about 101.5 bpm during walks, rising to around 109.5 bpm in the third trimester. This increase happens because your body is pumping significantly more blood to support the placenta and growing baby. Your blood volume increases by nearly 50% during pregnancy, and your heart compensates by beating faster.
Resting Heart Rate by Age
The 60 to 100 bpm range applies to all adults 18 and older, but younger age groups have naturally faster hearts. Here’s how normal resting heart rate changes from birth through adulthood:
- Newborn (birth to 4 weeks): 100 to 205 bpm
- Infant (4 weeks to 1 year): 100 to 180 bpm
- Toddler (1 to 3 years): 98 to 140 bpm
- Preschool (3 to 5 years): 80 to 120 bpm

Children’s hearts are smaller and beat faster to circulate blood effectively. By the teenage years, the heart has grown enough that the resting rate settles into the adult range.
Target Heart Rate During Exercise
Your resting rate tells you about your baseline health. Your exercise heart rate tells you how hard you’re working. The American Heart Association estimates your maximum heart rate at roughly 220 minus your age. During moderate exercise, you want to hit 50% to 70% of that maximum. Vigorous exercise pushes you to 70% to 85%.

When Your Heart Rate Signals a Problem
A resting heart rate consistently above 100 bpm is called tachycardia. It can be caused by stress, caffeine, dehydration, anemia, thyroid issues, or heart rhythm disorders. A resting rate regularly below 60 bpm (bradycardia) is normal for athletes but worth investigating if you’re not particularly active, especially if it comes with lightheadedness, fatigue, or fainting.
Context matters more than a single reading. Your heart rate spikes temporarily from coffee, anxiety, a hot room, or standing up quickly. That’s not concerning. What matters is the pattern over time. If your resting heart rate is consistently outside the 60 to 100 range and you’re not a trained athlete, or if you notice sudden, unexplained changes in your typical rate, that’s worth bringing up with a healthcare provider.
How to Get an Accurate Reading
For the most reliable resting heart rate measurement, check it first thing in the morning before getting out of bed. Sit or lie still for a few minutes first. Place two fingers on the inside of your wrist, just below the base of your thumb, and count the beats for 30 seconds, then multiply by two. Wearable devices and smartwatches can also track your resting rate automatically, often averaging overnight readings for a more consistent number.
Avoid measuring right after exercise, caffeine, a stressful event, or a large meal. All of these temporarily elevate your heart rate and won’t reflect your true resting baseline. Tracking your resting heart rate over weeks or months gives you a far more useful picture than any single measurement.
