AI-driven optimization efforts have shown the ability to reduce transportation costs by up to 30 percent, decrease inventory levels by 25 percent, and improve demand forecast accuracy by 75 percent.

Optimization projects generally move through three repeating phases: understand the current state, identify improvements, and take action.

The first phase is about gathering and analyzing data. You examine cost, usage, and efficiency metrics across your operations. This includes budgeting trends, performance benchmarks, and key indicators that reveal where value is being created and where it’s being lost. The point is to build a clear, evidence-based picture of how things actually work, not how people assume they work. The gap between those two is often where the biggest opportunities hide.

The second phase involves identifying specific changes that would improve efficiency or create more value. These options frequently compete with each other for attention and resources, so a well-defined set of criteria tied to the organization’s goals helps teams prioritize. The technical side of optimization, the models, the data analysis, the process mapping, is rarely what kills an initiative. The failures are almost always human.

Resistance to change is the most common barrier. Optimization requires people to abandon familiar routines and adopt new ways of working. That feels risky, even when the current process is clearly inefficient. People naturally protect what’s comfortable and reliable, and without a compelling reason to change, they’ll default to the status quo.

Poor communication compounds the problem. When one department implements changes without understanding another department’s needs, the result is frustration, delays, and eroded trust.
