What Is Patch Scanning and How Does It Work?

Patch scanning is the process of automatically checking computers, servers, and other devices to find missing software updates. A scanning tool compares what’s installed on each system against a database of available patches, then generates a report showing which updates are missing and how urgent they are. It’s a core part of keeping any IT environment secure, because unpatched software is one of the most common ways attackers break into systems.

How Patch Scanning Works

A patch scan follows a straightforward sequence. First, the tool discovers every device on the network: servers, workstations, laptops, and network equipment. It identifies each machine’s operating system and installed software, building a live inventory. Then it checks that inventory against databases of known vulnerabilities and released patches, flagging anything that’s out of date.

At a technical level, the scanner inspects specific markers on each system to determine what’s been installed. On Windows machines, for example, it reads registry keys and file version numbers to confirm whether a given update is present and active. If the expected values don’t match, the system gets flagged as missing that patch. The scan results typically include a severity rating for each gap, so security teams know which missing patches pose the greatest risk and should be addressed first.

After patches are deployed, a follow-up scan verifies that installations succeeded. This confirmation step closes the loop: scan, fix, scan again.

Patch Scanning vs. Vulnerability Scanning

These two terms overlap but aren’t the same thing. Patch scanning has a narrow focus: finding systems that are missing vendor-released updates. Vulnerability scanning covers a much broader landscape. It looks for misconfigurations, weak passwords, default credentials, overly permissive access controls, and architectural weaknesses, whether or not a patch exists for them.

Think of it this way: every missing patch is a vulnerability, but not every vulnerability has a patch. A database server using a default admin password is a serious security gap, but no software update will fix it. Vulnerability management takes a holistic view of risk across an entire environment, while patch scanning tackles the specific, fixable subset of problems where a vendor has already released a correction.

In practice, most organizations run both. Patch scans keep software current; vulnerability scans catch everything else.

The Full Patch Management Lifecycle

Patch scanning is just the detection phase of a larger workflow. The complete cycle looks like this:

  • Discovery and scanning: Identify all assets on the network and check them for missing patches.
  • Analysis and prioritization: Rank missing patches by severity. A critical security fix for an internet-facing server gets attention before a minor update on an internal test machine.
  • Testing: Deploy patches to a small group of non-critical systems first to make sure they don’t break anything. Software updates occasionally cause compatibility issues, and catching those in a test environment avoids disrupting production.
  • Deployment: Roll patches out in phases, starting with broader system groups and eventually reaching production. Maintenance windows are scheduled to minimize business disruption, though critical security patches sometimes require emergency deployment outside normal hours.
  • Verification: Run another scan to confirm every targeted system received the update successfully. Any systems that failed get flagged for manual remediation.

This cycle runs continuously. New patches are released constantly, so scanning is typically scheduled at regular intervals rather than treated as a one-time event.

Agent-Based vs. Agentless Scanning

There are two main approaches to running patch scans, and each has clear tradeoffs.

Agent-based scanning installs a small piece of monitoring software on every system you want to scan. That agent runs locally, giving you deep, real-time visibility into what’s happening on each machine. The downside is maintenance: you need to install, update, and manage the agent on every device, and it uses some of each system’s processing power, memory, and network bandwidth.

Agentless scanning connects to systems remotely, often through cloud provider APIs or network protocols, and inspects them from the outside without installing anything. It’s faster to deploy and easier to scale across large environments. The tradeoff is less depth. You get a solid picture of what’s installed and what’s missing, but you won’t have the same level of real-time, process-level detail an agent provides.

Many organizations use a hybrid approach. Agentless scanning provides broad coverage and a complete asset inventory across the environment, while agents get deployed on high-value targets like payment systems or databases where deeper monitoring is worth the overhead. If your main challenge is simply knowing what devices exist and what state they’re in, agentless scanning is a good starting point. If you need detailed forensics on specific critical systems, agents fill that gap.

Why Compliance Frameworks Require It

Patch scanning isn’t optional for organizations that handle sensitive data. Major compliance standards build it directly into their requirements. PCI DSS, the standard for any business processing credit card payments, mandates that security patches be applied within one month of release. To prove compliance, organizations must maintain an up-to-date asset inventory, keep records of patch testing and deployment, and run monitoring to confirm successful installation. These requirements apply regardless of company size.

Compliance audits expect documented evidence: asset inventories, patch testing records, deployment logs, and monitoring reports. Automated patch scanning tools generate most of this documentation as a byproduct of the scanning process, which is one reason they’ve become standard. The University System of New Hampshire’s cybersecurity standard, fairly typical of institutional policies, requires internal and external scans at least quarterly, with web applications scanned monthly.

Common Challenges

Patch scanning sounds simple in theory, but several recurring problems complicate it in practice.

False positives are one of the biggest frustrations. A scanner may report a vulnerability that doesn’t actually exist on the system, often because the organization has applied a backported fix (a security correction applied to an older software version without changing the version number). The scanner sees the old version number and flags it as vulnerable, even though the underlying flaw has been patched. When this happens frequently, security teams develop alert fatigue, gradually ignoring warnings because they assume most are false alarms. That’s dangerous, because real vulnerabilities get buried in the noise.

Running multiple scanning tools compounds the problem. Different tools may flag the same issue with slightly different descriptions, creating duplicate alerts that waste time as analysts try to figure out whether they’re looking at one problem or two.

Reboot requirements create friction too. Many patches, particularly operating system updates, require a system restart to take effect. For a laptop, that’s minor. For a production server handling transactions around the clock, scheduling downtime for a reboot requires coordination and planning.

Scanning in Cloud and Container Environments

Traditional patch scanning assumes systems stick around long enough to be scanned and patched. In modern cloud environments, that’s not always the case. Auto-scaling groups spin up new servers to handle traffic spikes and shut them down minutes later. Containers, the lightweight packages used to run applications in platforms like Docker and Kubernetes, may exist for seconds or hours.

For containers, scanning shifts earlier in the process. Static image scanning analyzes container images before they’re deployed, checking the base operating system, libraries, and application components for known vulnerabilities. This happens as part of the development pipeline, so problems are caught before code ever reaches production. Dynamic scanning then analyzes running containers to catch issues that only appear at runtime, like misconfigurations that weren’t visible in the static image.

Keeping base images up to date is critical in these environments. If your container images are built on an outdated foundation, every container you launch inherits those vulnerabilities. Automating scans within your build and deployment pipeline ensures that nothing ships without being checked first.
