PreviDent 5000 Booster Plus is a prescription-strength toothpaste used to prevent cavities. It contains 1.1% sodium fluoride, which delivers 5,000 parts per million (ppm) of fluoride to your teeth. That’s roughly four to five times more fluoride than what you’ll find in a standard over-the-counter toothpaste, making it a targeted tool for people at higher risk of tooth decay.
Why a Dentist Would Prescribe It
This product is classified as a dental caries preventive for once-daily topical use. Your dentist or dental hygienist will typically prescribe it if you’re at elevated risk for cavities due to one or more specific factors: dry mouth (from medications or medical conditions), a history of frequent cavities, orthodontic appliances like braces, root surfaces exposed by receding gums, overdentures, or a diet high in sugar or other cavity-promoting foods.
It’s not meant to replace regular toothpaste for everyone. The higher fluoride concentration is reserved for situations where standard fluoride toothpaste isn’t providing enough protection on its own. If your dentist hands you a prescription for it, it usually means they’ve identified something in your mouth that puts you in a higher-risk category.
How High-Dose Fluoride Protects Teeth
Your tooth enamel is made of a mineral called hydroxyapatite. Acids from bacteria and food constantly pull calcium and phosphorus ions out of the enamel surface, a process called demineralization. Normally, your saliva helps push some of those minerals back in. Fluoride supercharges that repair process.
When fluoride is present at the enamel surface, it combines with calcium to form two things that work in your favor. First, it helps rebuild the enamel with a modified mineral called fluorapatite, which is more resistant to acid attacks than the original hydroxyapatite. Second, it forms a compound with calcium that sits on the tooth surface and slowly releases fluoride over time, keeping protective fluoride levels elevated in your saliva between brushings. At a concentration of 5,000 ppm, significantly more fluoride is available for both of these protective mechanisms compared to a standard 1,000 to 1,500 ppm toothpaste.
How to Use It
PreviDent 5000 Booster Plus is used once daily in place of your regular toothpaste, typically at bedtime. You apply a thin ribbon of the paste to your toothbrush and brush thoroughly for at least one minute, making sure to cover all tooth surfaces. After brushing, spit out the excess but avoid rinsing your mouth with water, eating, or drinking for at least 30 minutes. This allows the fluoride to remain in contact with your teeth longer, maximizing absorption into the enamel.
For your other brushings during the day, you can continue using your regular over-the-counter toothpaste. The prescription paste is specifically designed as a once-daily boost, not a full-time replacement.
Who Should Not Use It
PreviDent 5000 Booster Plus is a prescription-only product. Children under age 6 should not use it unless specifically directed by a dentist or physician, as safety and effectiveness have not been established for that age group. Children between 6 and 12 should be supervised during use to prevent swallowing, since ingesting high-fluoride toothpaste over time can cause dental fluorosis (white spots or streaks on developing permanent teeth) in younger patients.
The product uses a neutral pH formulation, which means it’s gentler on dental restorations like composite fillings and porcelain crowns compared to acidic fluoride treatments. This makes it suitable for people with extensive dental work.
What to Expect
PreviDent 5000 Booster Plus won’t reverse cavities that have already formed into full holes in the tooth. What it does is halt and repair the earliest stages of decay, the soft, demineralized spots that haven’t yet broken through the enamel surface. Over weeks of consistent use, these early lesions can remineralize and harden back up.
If you were prescribed it for dry mouth, you may also notice that your teeth feel smoother and less sensitive over time. Dry mouth drastically reduces the natural mineral-repair cycle that saliva provides, and the high-fluoride paste helps compensate for that gap. Most people use it for as long as their risk factors persist, which for conditions like medication-induced dry mouth or receding gums often means ongoing daily use.
The product comes in several flavors, including a fruit-flavored version (marketed as “Fruitastic”) that may be more palatable for younger patients or anyone who dislikes the taste of mint. Your dentist can specify which version to fill when writing the prescription.
