Raven is an essential oil blend designed primarily for respiratory comfort. It combines five oils that produce a cooling, menthol-like sensation when applied to the chest or diffused, making it a popular natural alternative to conventional chest rubs during cold weather or allergy seasons.
What’s in the Blend
Raven contains five essential oils: ravintsara, eucalyptus radiata, lemon, peppermint, and wintergreen. Ravintsara is the lead ingredient and the one that gives the blend its name. It comes from the leaves of a camphor tree species native to Madagascar and is rich in a compound called 1,8-cineole, a natural expectorant that helps thin and loosen mucus in both the upper and lower airways.
Peppermint and eucalyptus contribute menthol and eucalyptol, two compounds that trigger cold-sensitive receptors in your skin and airways. These receptors (called TRPM8 channels) are the same ones that detect actual cold temperatures, which is why rubbing the blend on your chest creates a strong cooling sensation even though nothing has changed in temperature. That cooling feeling is what makes breathing feel more open and clear. Lemon adds a bright citrus note to the aroma, while wintergreen provides a warming counterpoint with a high concentration of methyl salicylate.
Respiratory Support
The most common reason people reach for Raven is to ease the feeling of congestion or tightness in the chest. You can think of it as a natural chest rub. Dilute one drop of Raven with one drop of a carrier oil like olive oil or coconut oil, then massage it onto your chest and the back of your neck. The combination of ravintsara’s mucus-thinning properties and the cooling sensation from peppermint and eucalyptus creates an experience similar to mentholated vapor rubs you’d find at a pharmacy.
Many people also use Raven during cold-weather months as a comfort ritual. Massaging the diluted blend onto your chest and neck before bed can make nighttime breathing feel easier, especially when you’re dealing with seasonal stuffiness.
Diffusing for Clearer Breathing
Raven works well in a diffuser, particularly during exercise or when you want a refreshing atmosphere in a room. The manufacturer recommends diffusing for up to 30 minutes at a time, up to three times daily. If you’re using it during a workout, 8 to 20 drops in your diffuser can promote the sensation of deeper, clearer breathing while you exercise. The eucalyptus and peppermint components carry well through air, so even a modest amount fills a room quickly.
How to Use It Safely on Skin
Raven should always be diluted before applying it to your skin. Essential oils in general are too concentrated to use undiluted, and Raven contains wintergreen, which is roughly 98% methyl salicylate. In small, properly diluted amounts this isn’t a concern for most adults, but it does mean you need to respect the blend’s potency.
For a simple chest or neck application, a 1:1 ratio of Raven to carrier oil works well. For broader body massage, a 2% dilution is standard for adults: that’s roughly 12 drops of essential oil per ounce of carrier oil. On the face, drop to 1% or less. Keep Raven away from your eyes and mucous membranes regardless of dilution.
Wintergreen’s methyl salicylate content makes Raven a poor choice for young children. Methyl salicylate is seriously toxic in small amounts for kids under six. Even a teaspoon of pure wintergreen oil has been linked to fatal poisoning in toddlers. While Raven contains wintergreen as only one ingredient in a blend, the safest approach is to avoid using it on or around small children entirely.
Raven vs. RC Blends
If you’ve been researching respiratory oil blends, you’ve likely seen RC mentioned alongside Raven. Both target breathing comfort, but they use different ingredient profiles. RC is built around eucalyptus, lavender, and peppermint, giving it a softer, more floral quality. Raven leans on ravintsara and wintergreen for a more intense, cooling and slightly warming sensation. Some people alternate between the two or layer them together during cold and flu season for broader aromatic coverage. Neither is objectively better; it often comes down to which scent profile you prefer and how your body responds to the blend.
Other Common Uses
Beyond respiratory care, people use Raven in a few other everyday situations. The cooling sensation on the chest and neck can feel soothing after a long day, especially if you carry tension in your shoulders. Some users apply it (diluted) to the bottoms of their feet before bed as part of a nighttime wellness routine, since the soles of the feet are less sensitive and absorb oils easily.
During travel, a small roller bottle of pre-diluted Raven can serve as a portable refresher. Rolling it onto your wrists or chest in a stuffy airplane cabin or hotel room provides a quick burst of that open-airway sensation without needing a diffuser. The lemon and peppermint notes also help the blend double as an energizing pick-me-up when you’re feeling sluggish.
