Real power is the portion of electrical energy in an AC circuit that actually performs useful work, like spinning a motor, generating heat, or lighting a bulb. It’s measured in watts (W) and represented by the letter P. In contrast to other forms of power flowing through a circuit, real power is the energy you consume and pay for on your electricity bill.
The term comes up most often in electrical engineering, but “real power” also has meaning in physics, human performance, and even psychology. Here’s what it means across each context and why it matters.
Real Power in Electrical Circuits
In any AC (alternating current) circuit, three types of power exist simultaneously: real power, reactive power, and apparent power. Real power, sometimes called “true power” or “working power,” is the energy that gets converted into something useful. When a heater warms a room or a computer processes data, that’s real power at work.
Reactive power (Q) is different. It’s energy that sloshes back and forth between the power source and components like motors or capacitors without doing any productive work. Think of it as electricity that gets borrowed and returned 60 times per second. It’s measured in volt-amperes reactive (VAR) rather than watts.
Apparent power (S) is the total combination of both, measured in volt-amperes (VA). These three types of power relate to each other like the sides of a right triangle: real power is one side, reactive power is the other, and apparent power is the hypotenuse. This geometric relationship makes the math straightforward once you know any two values.
How Real Power Is Calculated
The basic formula is simple: P = V × I, where V is voltage and I is current. In a purely resistive load (like a space heater with no motor), all the power delivered is real power.
In circuits with motors, transformers, or other inductive components, you need to account for the angle between voltage and current waveforms. The formula becomes P = V × I × cos(φ), where φ (phi) is that angle. The closer voltage and current are to being perfectly in sync, the more of the total power is real, usable power.
This is where power factor comes in. Power factor is the ratio of real power to apparent power:

A power factor of 1.0 means all the power flowing through the circuit is doing useful work. A power factor of 0.5 means only half the power is productive, and the rest is reactive. Most industrial facilities aim for a power factor above 0.9, because utilities often charge penalties when too much reactive power clogs the system without generating revenue.
Why Businesses Track Real Power
For homes, the distinction between real and apparent power rarely matters because residential meters typically measure real power in kilowatt-hours (kWh). But for factories and commercial buildings, the difference is significant. Energy monitoring systems track how much electricity each machine consumes and when peak demand occurs. The goal is straightforward cost reduction: identifying which equipment draws the most real power and shifting usage to off-peak hours when rates are lower.
Separately, power quality monitoring watches whether the electricity itself is clean and stable. Voltage dips, harmonic distortion, and poor power factor can damage sensitive equipment, trigger unexpected shutdowns, and shorten the lifespan of motors and electronics. A facility might use plenty of apparent power while converting only a fraction of it into real, productive work. Correcting that imbalance with capacitor banks or other power factor correction devices reduces waste and lowers utility costs.
Real Power in Physics
Outside of electrical engineering, power in physics has a broader definition: the rate at which work is done, or equivalently, the rate of energy transfer. The formula is P = W/t, where W is work (in joules) and t is time (in seconds). The SI unit is the watt, defined as one joule per second, or in base units, one kilogram times meters squared per second cubed.
James Watt originally defined mechanical power as force multiplied by velocity, which gave him a way to compare his steam engines to horses. That relationship still holds: P = F × v × cos(φ), where F is force, v is velocity, and φ is the angle between them. If you push a cart at a steady speed on flat ground, the power you’re exerting equals your pushing force times the cart’s speed.
How Much Power the Human Body Produces
The human body is itself a power-generating system, converting chemical energy from food into mechanical output. The numbers are humbling compared to machines. An average healthy adult doing vigorous exercise sustains between 50 and 150 watts over an hour. Over a full eight-hour work shift, a well-fed manual laborer averages about 75 watts of sustained mechanical output.
Elite athletes are a different story. A professional cyclist can hold roughly 440 watts for an hour during a race, and track sprinters produce bursts exceeding 2,500 watts for a few seconds. For perspective, 75 watts is roughly enough to power a single incandescent light bulb. The body’s efficiency at converting metabolic fuel into mechanical work is optimized through evolution, but it still wastes a large portion of energy as heat, which is why exercise makes you warm.
Real Power as a Psychological Concept
People searching “what is real power” sometimes mean something less technical: what gives a person genuine influence over others? Social psychologists have a framework for this. French and Raven identified five bases of power in 1959, and the distinction that resonates most is between position power and personal power.
Position power comes from rank or title. A manager can assign tasks, approve raises, or issue warnings. This encompasses three of French and Raven’s categories: legitimate power (authority granted by a role), reward power (the ability to offer incentives), and coercive power (the ability to punish). It’s effective but limited. Removing the title removes the influence.
Personal power comes from who you are rather than what role you hold. It includes expert power, where people follow your lead because you have specialized knowledge, and referent power, where people are influenced by you because they admire or like you. Someone with no formal authority can still shape decisions, rally teams, and drive change through personal power alone. The distinction is often summarized simply: position power is like being a manager, while personal power is like being a coach. Having one doesn’t guarantee the other.
